In Governor Scott’s first post-election press conference Wednesday, November 13, reporters asked Governor Scott his thoughts on President Trump’s plans as an administration. The questions were focused around immigration, “maintaining democracy,” and how he plans to have a relationship with the new Trump administration.

Vermont Public reporter Peter Hirschfeld asked about the reality of Trump’s plan to deport millions of illegals and the effects that might have on Vermont farms. “The president has talked about deporting all 17 million people who are in the country,” he said.

Gov Scott: “I think that’s just unrealistic. I just don’t see how that could happen.”

Hirschfeld: “Well if you’re a migrant farm worker in Enosburg, it feels pretty real and so there are representatives of those communities that want to know what are our state leaders including the governor going to do to keep us safe from that outcome?”

Scott: “Well again, we proved before that we would take whatever action we needed to to protect Vermonters and some of those folks who are here that we need to have as part of our communities, but we didn’t react until I came into office. It was into January, we knew more about what the plan was at that point in time by the president. I’m not sure that we know completely what his plan is. Because I don’t see that what he has proposed is realistic and I would have to think that those who are coming into power with him would understand.”

Governor Scott was asked about the potential of joining the organization “Governors Safeguarding Democracy” started by Democrats J.B. Pritzker of Illinois and Jared Polis of Colorado. This organization is made of attorneys general and other Democratic governors (including Governor Gavin Newsome of California) who “have pledged to resist conservative Trump policies on everything from immigration to rollbacks on environmental protections.”

Governor Scott told the reporters that he was not interested in joining at this time because he perceived their move as political. “I don’t know who’s leading it, I think Governor Pritzker is one, Governor Newsome might be another. I don’t know if you connected the dots but I think they’re running in 2028, right? So I think we have to take the politics out of this, and we have to work together in some way to get through this.”

VTDigger Capitol Bureau Chief Sarah Mearhoff asked: “So you don’t think that the promises that Trump has made on the campaign trail… it sounds like you don’t think a lot of them are going to fully come to fruition?”

Gov Scott: “I think that they will address some of them, most of them maybe in some form, but not to the magnitude that he committed to on the campaign trail. No, I don’t I believe, but we’ll see.”

Hirschfeld wondered if his past comments about Donald Trump would affect his relationship with the administration. “How concerned are you about comments you’ve made about the president elect affecting the incoming administration’s posture as it relates to Vermont and how you go about forging relationships with key members of that Administration in the coming months?”

Scott: “I’ll probably know some of those cabinet members in my interactions with other governors. I believe that there’ll be some governors who will be part members of his cabinet eventually and I have good relationships with them.

“I’m not going to be any different than I’ve been before. I call them like I see them and I did that in the first four years of the Trump Administration and I’ll continue to do that because I think it’s important that we have that. I’ll do it in a respectful, civil way.”

Scott may have been speaking about Governor Doug Burgum of North Dakota, a friend of the Vermont governor who spoke at the VTGOP state convention in May and was last night nominated by the Trump administration as Secretary of the Interior.

Governor Scott finished his comments by saying, “I respect the Office of the President. I want to make that clear regardless of who’s there because it’s part of who we are and we have to move on so we were able to work with the administration.

“His administration, previously, there were some good things that he did, that we supported, and we advocated for and they helped us in ways as well, so we’ll see what happens. I’m hoping that he will spend more time trying to bring the country together and trying to improve on some of our shortcomings and less time on retribution, because that is just a waste.”

  1. Thank goodness we Vermont taxpayers provide the funding for Vermont Public, to provide “journalists” to ask the questions of people that no one cares about their opinion on… At least it did provide an opportunity for the Guv to state that he has no intention of joining “the resistance”, and offered that he perceives it “as political”. It’s not the answer that was anticipated by the moonbat media.
I hope it is somewhere not too far down the list of Trump’s priorities to cut all federal funding for public broadcasting.

    • hirschfeld and mearhoff were trolling phil scott for a headline to tantalize their elitist liberal donors. Sounds like phil knew it and stayed on task.
The hypothetical migrant farm worker in Enosburg has nothing to be concerned about, if this hypothetical person has a visa. As usual, the facts are distorted to suit- and legal migrants, visitors, workers get lumped into the same tired arguments
used to justify illegal migrants, border crossers and the cartels that profit from their illegal entry into the US.
Strange how the liberal mind finds illegal immigration acceptable until the effects directly impact that same liberal mind. eric adams, mayor of NYC and residents of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard come to mind- as well as the lives lost and impacted by the illegal drugs transported into the US by illegal migrants, forcibly- by the coyote’s and cartels profiting from exploiting liberal political policies.

    • I am sure there will be a process and it won’t be overnight. Let’s not jump to conclusions and go into fear about the details because I am sure there is a vetting process and it will help Americans overall, as that’s why we need to fix this now.

    • Thank you Rich.

I have noticed you make a lot of reasonable, common sense comments on all topics. What are your thoughts on this?

Vermonters who would like to see sanity in our state government should consider what the 2024 Election numbers overall would have looked like if “Republican” Governor Scott and “Republican” Party Chair Dame had not openly opposed and worked against the Republican Candidate for United States President.

One of the most disturbing actions was having Governor Scott openly instruct all Vermont Voters of all Parties to take a Republican Primary Ballot and vote for Nikki Haley.

What happened to the Republican Party Principal of Fairness and Ethics that allows all Party Candidates to work through the election process and primary election, and then get behind the final Party Candidate? Where is the Unity?

Dame and the other Republican Party Delegates in Vermont attended the 2024 Republican Convention and expressed their full support for Trump yet, Scott and Dame worked in opposition.

A more important question is why? While many don’t like Trump’s personality, an election is not a personality contest. What is it about Trump that allowed Scott and Dame to work against the 2024 Republican Party Presidential Candidate to negatively affect the Republican Party overall in Vermont?

I believe these actions are a betrayal to those in the Vermont Republican Party who ran as Candidates all over the state; as well as many others who worked hard to gain support for all Republican Candidates throughout the state.

Vermont Republicans deserve answers and accountability.

    • VTBeliever, I have typically supported Gov. Scott regardless of his public stance of not supporting Trump in a popularity contest. Whatever he has to say to get a decent slice of the moderates/ moderate democrat vote, I am ok with. The alternative is the horrible scenario of Gov. Baruth, Gov. Krowinski, Gov. LaLonde etc…

  2. Deporting17 millon is unrealistic but absorbing them at taxpayer expense isn’t right Rino?

  3. Wait a minute, Paul. Why is deporting illegal immigrants ‘unrealistic’? What’s your basis for this opinion? Why does your missive not include any actual quotes or platform statements by President-elect Trump? What you write is all hearsay. Let’s have a discussion about what Trump has actually said…. for a change.

    https://www.donaldjtrump.com/platform/

    • And please note the lack of distinction in Hirschfeld’s question between legal and illegal immigrants.

    • Paul/Guy: Paul authored the story. He chose the narrative to repeat without expressing any alternative points of view. I said: ‘What you write is all hearsay.’ Then I said, “Let’s have a discussion about what Trump has actually said…”.

So… how about it? “Why is deporting illegal immigrants ‘unrealistic’?” Especially given Gary’s point that not deporting them and paying their life expenses is likely more unrealistic.

And if you don’t agree with the hearsay you reported, say so.

  4. Donald J Trump, doesn’t have all the answers, and some presented sound really
unattainable or just plain extreme, but one thing for sure, he will try to do what he promised his voters, something we can’t say about Vermont’s spineless Governor, he couldn’t even handle the progressives in the state house, and cowered at every push
by his progressive friends or he’s on there side ??………… pretty pathetic

If your an immigrant and want to work get a green card, work visa at the port of authority, but when you sneak into a country ” breaking the law ” you deserve to be deported and they should be, so if your an illegal today maybe you need to head back home and if you are really seeking ” Asylum ” state your case to the proper authority, breaking our laws, is not a good start.

These 10-20 million that have come to the US illegally, have spit in the face of those that followed our laws to become US citizens or legal workers, Scott thinks the mass deportation is unrealistic, maybe, but at least Trump with try even with al the road block forth coming, like from Vermont’s so-called conservative Governor !!!

  5. Governor Scott is no friend of MAGA. How can he not know the criminality of what the Biden-Harris rogue administration has done to this country and the American people? Illegal is illegal and it is a crime. What about our Northern Border – is Governor Scott concerned about the terrorists coming through – how about the drugs, the human trafficking, the children? How about the City of Burlington and the progressive/democrat Agenda that is destroying that City and the whole of Vermont? Let’s get down to the nitty gritty, shall we. Governor Scott never endorsed President Trump and made that widely known, he said he actually voted for Harris – that should tell the American people and Vermonters everything they need to know. All indications are that Governor Scott is not for American First policies, case in point the Climate Alliance, check it out. https://usclimatealliance.org/members/ Political people have a way of speaking in word salads all the time to try and convince the populace of the Agenda they are actually working for. One has to do their research and know how this country was founded so they are not brainwashed by a destructive agenda against our country. One has to read between the lines of what politicians say and look at the actions that are taken (and not taken) to find the truth.

  6. Sniff sniff…what’s that stinky odor on the air?
Can’t be banure… that’s all paid and laid… must be the guv’ner who is trying to satisfy two masters…or perhaps even more… he can’t answer to the American people because he’s agree to and signed onto a global UN and NATO and WHO agenda Vermonters were never asked if they wanted to participate in… so he’s not interested in us at all… he IS interested as the US’s ‘most popular governor’ of a job in DC… and he MUST please his REAL minders…
As a former inde journo I can tell you that ‘word salad’ (which is basically talking around a point not answering it which is what he has done… no accountability in other words) is a tactic used by ALL politicians when they don’t want to be held to what they are saying.
Which is the guv’ MO from the get go…
Who is he afraid of offending, really?
Asking who he owes allegiance to (and their labels) might be a more pointed question… but one which will be seen as rude and offensive to someone like philnothingburger though he’d have someone else make that point.
Bottom line unless you are a newbie, ALL politicians learn to make salads and bamboozle their constituents and dazzel ’em with b.s. like mushrooms… eventually. Here in VT we think we’re immune. Nope. We’re the small pond for the little fish that came from other states who have their eyes on the ‘great American watering hole’…and all those oligarchs who’re looking for stooges for their vested interests and bottom lines…
Poor Phil… nothing sticks to him… lol… pablum. NOT the sort of strong leader we need in these times…
I agree that we need to start setting up for the next election NOW with someone who can garner the popular vote in 4 years. Some good suggestions have been made… but really, who WANTS to get into politics these days? Ewwwwwwww…stinky.

  7. Governor Scott stay off the never-Trump bandwagon, and let’s see what comes about. Bottom line, the gangs, criminals and trouble makers need to go. And don’t forget the drugs decimating Vermont. You’ll have to swallow Trumps decisions the way conservatives in Vermont had to swallow your decisions. I doubt good productive people will be deported even if they BROKE THE LAW SNEAKING INTO THE COUNTRY. Let the people’s elected President get sworn in and put forward his promises.

  8. Gov Scott: I would only say that Trump’s win is because of the massive turnout of voters who voted for him…. NOT your Pal Kamala.
This is all because of the people, Governor, I say again, THE PEOPLE, which includes yours truly!!!!

  9. Unrealistic, Gov. Scott? Well, then, why not start on a small scale, right here in Vermont. What about the state’s agricultural, hospitality, and lawncare sectors?

  10. They didn’t say they would deport them overnight, it took them years to get that many here, it’ll take time, but once they start, incoming ones will slow down because they know they just be brought back. Holman made the statement that if local cops aren’t allowed to help, instead of sending 100 ICE agents they send 200. Holeman will be on a mission, ask about separating families, he said the families can go back with them, problem solved! They are already slowing them down, since they heard trump won!

  11. While your playing dog and pony show with the immigrants, you have another problem with some of these answers that could cause another rise in inflation.
You will know by June 2025 how all of this will play out. Every event creates an opposing operation and some of it is not good.

  12. Kamala supporters will argue about the impossibility of deporting 10-15 million invaders, yet somehow support how we should confiscate 100 million of what they define as “assault rifles”…

  13. Poor Gov Scott. He knows that the new administration is deadly serious but he can’t say that because he also knows that there is nothing he can do to stop it.

He might decide to agree to sanctuary cities but then Homeland Security might close Vermont’s passport processing facility or cut off other federal dollars that flow to this state.

So he will keep his mouth shut and hope for the best.

    • Watch him go to Washington for the Inauguration to celebrate as a Republican! He should not be allowed near any event after voting for a communist.

  14. All 17 million?? I WISH there was only 17 million to round up.I hope he gets as many as he can!!

  15. I honestly don’t know how Scott sits upright; he truly is the most spineless governor I’ve ever seen.

  16. Never mind the thought that deporting 17 million illegal immigrants may be ” unrealistic”. What about the thought that there are 17 MILLION HERE ILLEGALLY!

  17. You know what else is unrealistic?

That Phil Scott is a Republican and not a Commie sympathizer.

  18. Gary
“Deporting 17 millon is unrealistic but absorbing them at taxpayer expense isn’t right Rino?”

It would cost less to export the illegals.

  19. Governor Wind Sock appears conflicted and confused as to which way the winds of change will blow up his shorts. Perhaps the stiff howling wind coming will blow the whole Vermont house of cards down into it’s cellar hole.

Many economic experts and market watchers are bracing for impact and warning it will be get really bad for many. Some nuggets to consider: $1.7 Trillion in consumer credit card debt. Auto loan defaults and delinquency rates rising higher. Home mortgage delinquency rates highest on record and new home construction flatlining. Many are built, many remain empty. Businesses, large and small, shuttering and downsizing. The Fed buying up debt and ballooning their balance sheet signalling bust to dust. Rate up or rate down – doesn’t really matter to the billionaires, the average person will be wiped out either way. The market being inflated falsely and deliberately. They want digital currency and they will implode our current Fed notes to near worthlessness to get it done.

The real numbers don’t lie. Regardless, Trump is the proud winner of a burning bag of dung (the same burning bag of dung Bush handed off to Obama.) It is the global financial reset and they do it the exact same way each and every time. Will this time be any different? I haven’t heard anything that makes me believe the average American won’t be stunned and shocked out their dreamscape. Vermont will be hit hard because they have no plan and no reserves – loaned out and bonded out to the hilt – not a good economic plan by any stretch. Be prepared!

  20. Trump, as Rush used to say, could beat the Commiecrats with half his brain tied behind his back. But what Trump will have a hard time with is keeping RINOs like Phil Scott, Paul Dame, Paul Ryan, John Thune, John Cornyn, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins and Thom Tillis and others from stabbing him in the back.

How does Kari Lake, Sam Brown, Mike Rogers and Eric Hovde get beat in swing states that Trump won and turned red? It’s simple RINO’s control the Senate. Look what happened in the 2022 election.

Before the 2022 election on the tube, I saw Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell say he didn’t think the Republicans would take the Senate because of the quality of the Republican candidates. This was a blatant rebuke of all the Trump endorsed senate candidates.

A few days after that statement on Newsmax Dick Morris said that what McConnell is trying to do is destroy all of the Trump endorsed America First candidates, the reasoning being he would rather be Senate Minority Leader than Senate Majority Leader because that majority might have the vote to remove him as leader and give it to Rick Scott-R-FL. When the red wave didn’t happen, McConnell trashed the MAGA candidates again.

How could this be? A republican that didn’t want to take the Senate and put a halt to the Biden agenda, with the biggest reason that being Biden would not be able to get judicial nominees, federal and supreme court thru the Senate. Was there a conspiracy between the Democrats and McConnell? The Democrats funded several MAGA candidates in the primaries with the hope that they could beat them in the general by labeling them extremists. Now all the swamp creatures are coming out to say it was Trump’s fault and that his candidates lost the Senate. Really?

McConnell’s Senate Leadership Fund had over 100 million dollars to help Republican senate candidates get elected. So, what did he do with the money? Let’s start with Arizona. McConnell gave zero dollars to Blake Masters. Masters was outspent by 64 million dollars. Kelly 73 million Masters 9 million. In Pennsylvania OZ was outspent by 15 million dollars. Fetterman 52 million OZ 37 million. In Nevada Laxalt was outspent by 34 million dollars. Cortez Masto 46 million Laxalt 12 million. In Georgia Walker was out spent by 43 million dollars. Warnock 75 million Walker 32 million. In New Hampshire Bolduc was out spent by 34 million dollars Hassen 36 million Bolduc 2 million. McConnell stopped sending money to Bolduc after he was endorsed by Trump. Republican governor and rino Chris Sununu won election by a wide margin but didn’t lift a finger to help Bolduc. McConnell gave ZERO dollars to Vermont’s Gerald Malloy who also was endorsed by Trump. Now we get to Alaska where the Alaskan Republicans censured Lisa Murkowski. Then Murkowski’s friends put in ranked choice voting to make sure that Sara Palin and Kelly Tshibaca both Trump endorsed candidates would be stopped because Murkowski couldn’t win in a straight up election. McConnell funded Murkowski because she would vote for him as minority leader. This is even after Murkowski said she would be voting for Democrats. Murkowski had six times the funding of Tshibaca.

Now the Trump trashing starts. It was the election deniers. It was abortion. We have to go in a new direction. Trump’s time is passed. His candidates can’t get elected. Why? It’s because they fear Trump. He is a threat to people like Mitch McConnell’s and the Uni-Party’s power. If you recall when he was elected in 2016, he had to rely on the Republican establishment’s recommendations to fill White House and cabinet positions, FBI, CIA, etc. And they made sure they put people around him to weaken his authority. Not so this time. If he should get elected again, he will be able to drain the swamp by coming in with his own staff, cabinet and appointees that will greatly diminish their power. Tucker Carlson’s interview with former congressman Steve King from Iowa King said Paul Ryan did everything he could to thwart funding for the border wall.

McConnell with his same cronies, Thune, Cornyn, controlled the Senate Leadership Fund in 2024 and we are wondering how Kari Lake, Sam Brown, Mike Rogers and Eric Hovde got beat? Add the candidates that got beat because the 2020 Mich McConnell and you would have right now a MAGA Senate with Rick Scott as Senat Majority Leader.

When I was a correction officer an old timer told me when an inmate asks you for something or tells you something always ask yourself why. What’s their angle? So, what is the Republicans angle? To keep the Uni-Party alive and well and with a little backstabbing keep Trump under control.

  21. Governor Scott is a moderate and I’m fine with that. I don’t like this all one way or all the other way as it leaves a majority of the populace out of the process. Is deporting 17 million illegals possible? It will be difficult on a good day but to make a dent in that number is a good start. It is also only a beginning. Having worked at the border several years ago, I saw what goes on there myself. We send them back only to have them try again. We have to give them nothing when they get here in short, take away the freebies they come for. Hold accountable those who hire them is another measure and stop the one-sided reporting from the media. Oh yes, don’t let the southern border be a smoke screen for what is going on at our Northern border as well.

  22. If you take a look at the Vermont map of this last election, you will see that EVERY Town on the northern Vermont border voted Red. We cannot allow these illegal entries to continue and those law-breakers must be sent back. I have no problem with legal entry of migrants for jobs but the border crossings must be controlled. To not do so is insanity. Employers found hiring migrants without proper clearance should be fined heavily.

  23. This isn’t rocket science. They’re here for freebies. Stop giving them free plane tickets, housing, cash / EBT debit cards, and stop letting them work over or under the table. Most will just go back home.

    • I keep reading these posts and they claim that Scott is a moderate he’s a conservative he’s a republican…. What he really is and what he continues to be is a traitor to the United States of America..

He sold the state of Vermont out when he first became governor After promising gun owners in this state he would veto any gun laws In one of the safest states in the nation… It was at that point that Phil felt he could get away with anything When he signed a bill on the state house lawn looking into the eyes of the people that he asked to support him when he went full turncoat

Since that time Phil Scott has done everything he could not only to destroy our beautiful little state but to help destroy our country.

He started a petition with Patty McCoy to remove Trump from my office early… It was signed by all but 17 elected republicans that weren’t office at that time.

They were in favor of the same destruction of Vermont and the United States of America as the turncoat governor was.

Now governor Scott wonders how we will clear our country out of the well over 17000 illegal immigrants that have poured into America.

How many illegal immigrants have entered America through the state of Vermont which Scott made a sanctuary state… Do we have any actual numbers from a state that is totally capable of keeping Track of everything but the truth.

I think should sit down with Scott and demand the truth on the numbers of illegals that have poured into America through the state of Vermont.

We need to hold Scott To the truth especially at a time When he should have put country over party and voted for Donald Trump but instead voted for Harris and her marxist ways to destroy America.

I wonder if Phil Scott is playing apart along with the rest of these democrat Governors to continue the destruction of the United States of America in spite of the fact he’s sitting bacmovement mental.

It would be interesting to know how many of the newly elected republican candidates and how many of the ones still in office voted for Harris over Trump.

I think the voters have a right to know since the truth will set you free..

Maybe being the most popular governor in America Scott is just waiting to take over the reins of this movementment.

I pray every night that Vermonter’s open their eyes to To the lies being fed to them by this corrupt Scott administration and that the truth is finally exposed…

I honestly believe Phil Scott is part of the movement to overthrow the United States of America

      https://www.facebook.com/share/p/rYrc94XycXfPca7c/

  24. Everyone relax. No one knows how many illegals are in the country. 17, 20, 10 million. Yes, probably too many. Don’t get hung up on the estimates.

Trump never provided a timeline. Perhaps this mass deportation is the total number deportations over 5 years, 10 years, 20 years. Who knows?

No one knows what the costs will be. So don’t fret it. Perhaps there will be a budget allocation, perhaps it will come from other programs, perhaps the government will do what is does best borrow or print money.
