Friday at Four: our news staff talks up Legislature Week #1, Burlington mayor gag order on cops

by Guy Page

From the 802 Scoop Studio in Barre Friday, January 10, all four VDC news staff review:

– The first week in the Legislature. New committee leaders, new vibe of consensus, and new responsibility for the GOP to help be part of the solution. And a new lieutenant governor, new Republican John Rodgers.

– Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak’s controversial gag order on the Burlington Police Department. The Progressive mayor decreed there will be no public statements without her office’s approval following Chief Jon Murad’s call for the courts to consider a habitual offender status for the 51-times convicted Michael Reynolds, a veteran of 1,850 police interactions. Is this even legal? If it’s legal, is it wise to bind the chief of police for speaking out to protect his officers and the public from the repeated assaults allegedly committed by one of Burlington’s most notorious serial offenders? We discuss……

And finally, we briefly preview the State of Vermont’s efforts to protect Vermont from forest fires and the next big flood. For the first time ever, Friday at Four featured all four members of VDC’s growing news staff: Editor Guy Page, Social Media Director/Reporter Paul Bean, Reporter Mike Bielawski, and Managing Editor Tim Page.

Like all first-time efforts, it felt a little rocky at times. We are so thankful to Raylene Meunier and 802 Scoop Studio in Barre for providing the studio, cameras and equipment. More to come!

Thank you for checking in with Friday at Four and we encourage you to please share on your social media platform of choice.

  1. Good discussion. It was nice to see Mike Bielawski and put a face to the name we see so often in VDC reporting.

  2. Very much enjoyed the discussion and extremely reassured that you will be able to cover so thoroughly the machinations happening under the blessed dome . An educated voter is a happy voter and mostly a less abused voter ! Ps : Emerge is worth an article , it was conceived by Madeline Kunin to promote women of a certain political persuasion to run for office . Mission well accomplished. Monique

  3. Madeline Kunin was known by her three own words. HEALTHCARE, EDUCATION, and the ENVIRONMENT and look where we are today.

  4. Parkinson’s Law.
I have always referred to this concept with the idiom – Limits Become Extents.

When the speed limit on a highway is 60 mph, very few, if any drivers travel slower than 60 mph. When a department is allocated a budget amount, the department always spends the entire budget lest it demonstrate that it needs less.

It’s an example of the Tragedy of the Commons.

The definition of the Tragedy of the Commons is an economic and environmental science problem where individuals have access to a shared resource and act in their own interest, at the expense of other individuals. This can result in overconsumption, underinvestment, and depletion of resources.

  5. I would be remiss, gentlemen, if I didn’t express my disappointment in your coverage (or lack thereof) of School Choice as an education reform. You discuss student/staff ratios, poor academic performance, and the current benefits for teachers and administrators at the expense of students. But not a word about School Choice and the H.405 School Choice Act.

    Why is that?

  6. Question. Wil Mayor Emma install the congestion pricing scam like New York City in Burlington?????
She may need more money for her free meal ticket.
