A special food drive is underway to provide free weekly dinners to the Burlington mayor and her wife to help reduce the burden of being public servants.

Emma Mulvaney-Stanak, who took office as Mayor on April 1, and her partner Megan Moir, the director of water resources for the city of Burlington, make about $250,000 a year, but friends have started a food drive for the two women and their two children.

The sign up is through a website known as MealTrain.com and features a picture of Mulvaney-Stanak, Moir and their two children.

The website also says people can donate food cards to DoorDash, Panera, Chili’s, Visa and more to the family.

“If you are able to support them to make the job of Mayor more manageable, please consider bringing them a meal,” says the pitch letter sent by Rachel Siegel of Toward Liberation.

“They have been SO grateful each time a meal comes and personally I felt great to be supporting our community indirectly by helping keep Emma and Megan nourished,” Siegel wrote in the letter that was obtained by Vermont News First.

MealTrain.Com says its national program is designed for “new baby, illness, surgery, loss, adoption, deployment, new neighbor, anyone.”

Some Burlington city employees and departments, including the police, are prohibited by regulations from accepting free items, including meals.

Attempts to reach Mulvaney-Stanak were unsuccessful in recent days. Her chief spokesperson Joe Magee did not respond to the latest phone, text and emails today.

Attempts to reach Moir at her city job today was unsuccessful.  Moir is a former Winooski City Council member (2011-2013) and has worked for Burlington since 2009, records show.

The meal website says there are 25 participants so far and that Jessica Oski is listed as the organizer.  Oski is a former assistant city attorney and a lobbyist with over 30 years of experience. She is a Ward 4 Police Commissioner.

Oski also provided a note for the website:

“If we want to see women and parents of young children in political leadership roles, we need to find new ways to support them.  This meal train is one way! THANK YOU,” Oski wrote.

Access to the donation request and sign-up sheet appears limited to those provided by organizers.  It is entitled “Meal Train for Mayor Mulvaney-Stanak and Family.”

“I still feel the buzz of this 300+ person entourage in addition to all the many supporters who were less involved.  What a wave of momentum. We helped get her elected, and we can keep helping her!” Siegel wrote.

A website note indicates meal donations were sought for every day initially, but the solicitation letter indicated the Mayor has asked for a cutback. “She asked us to extend their mealtrain on Mondays only and take August off.”

August tends to be a slow month for the city. The City Council has only one meeting planned and Mayors have frequently taken vacation time before school re-opens.

There is a signup calendar where people can claim each Monday in the coming weeks. The volunteers list themselves and include what they plan to bring, apparently so those getting the meals will not have repeat menu items.

Delivery to their Old North End home is expected between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m., the website said. That might make it tight for the Mayor when she has City Council, Board of Finance and other meetings on Monday evenings.

Those preparing meals are given some limitations:  no gluten and no dairy.

The menus for the coming weeks are mixed.

The meal delivered for Monday this week was vegetable and tofu curry with rice and came from “Rex & Micah.”

Next Monday, roast chicken, local vegetables & watermelon will be on the table and provided by Sharyl Green.

Emily Eley says she plans “Something yummy and fresh!” for June 24.

Next month is filling up.  Chicken fajitas with corn or gluten-free tortillas on July 1 by Margaret Crowley and a summer pasta dish on July 8 by “jenberger oneword,” the website said.

Sylvia Fagin plans “Something GF and DF and yummy!” on July 15 and Stuart & Michelle Lefkowitz/Weiss say they will deliver “something plant based and delicious” on July 22.

Monday July 29 was still open at last check for those that want to join in.  Otherwise, volunteers will need to wait for the fall.  At least 3 Mondays in September are claimed.

  1. Truly disgusting in every way. That the mayor and her partner happily lap it up and throw out caveats about customizing food choices and a request for a ‘hold’ during ‘vacation times’ is the hight of cluelessness and arrogance.

    • The real cluelessness comes from the voters who actually make conscience – or at least some form of being semi-conscious – decisions to:
      1. Seek to be lorded over & controlled.
      2. Believe socialism/Communism to be superior to freedom & self-government.
      3. Want to dote on & serve & be subservient to these Leninists.

  2. I feel so bad for the mayor and her wife. It’s hard to make ends on $250k a year. Think of the privation! While I don’t have food or cash to donate, I may donate my Rolls Royce to them for their use. Can you imagine driving to work as mayor in a Ford or Toyota? The horror of it all! To quote Mayor Emma, “There are only two kinds of people in this world, the privileged and the riff raff. And my dear peons, you are the riff raff!” I love our mayor!

  3. To quote a great American, “ I will gladly pay you on Wednesday for a hamburger today.”

  4. Is there anybody to ask about a violation of the government employee ethics ? Is this not some form of a bribery or corruption?

  5. I couldn’t even finish reading the article! How outrageous this is! These women are out of touch and should not even hold office!!

  6. Burlington and Vermont use to be the envied by the US. Since Phil Hoff, I-91 and I-84 (1964) the state has degraded in a downward spiral of social and government degradation to today (60 years) to total crapology and taxes, unlivable by the natives. This article touches briefly on an aspect. Burlington has of the past years have become a criminal nest as news reports have disclosed. When people voted this freeloading Mayor you have to ponder the mentality of the voter. Apparently they don’t have the intellect to research and know the people, it’s the illiteracy make up of the city. The city (and the state) is loaded with “Flatlanders” to their utopia. I have been in some markets and get run over by “customers”, They have a “bully” attitude and don’t get in my way peon.

Noting the pic of the Mayor’s (male) partner, who would want to go to bed with that? Those two certainly are not normal by any means. No use in going on. Looking forward to the next ice age when Burlington is scraped cleaned. Need another Ethan Allen.
