A fire broke out at an encampment located under the Winooski River Railroad Bridge, commonly known as the “Blue Bridge,” this morning, June 10, fire officials say.

While en route to a training session, Burlington Fire Engine Company 5 noticed a large column of smoke coming from the area near the bridge. Burlington fire resources were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered an encampment ablaze under the bridge on the Winooski side. One adult male was found to have sustained burns to his legs and was transported by a Burlington Fire Department ambulance for medical treatment.

Crews from both the Burlington and Winooski Fire Departments worked together to evacuate the area and quickly extinguish the flames before they could spread further.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Winooski Fire and Police Departments, who are leading the probe into the incident.

Anyone with information regarding this fire is urged to contact the Winooski Police Department at (802) 655-0221. Any details, no matter how small, could prove valuable in determining the circumstances that led to the blaze and the injury sustained by the individual.

As the investigation continues, concerns have been raised about the safety and living conditions of those residing in encampments within the community. Local authorities and social service organizations are expected to review protocols and explore additional measures to address the issue of homelessness and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

  1. The word “troll” takes on a much more traditional meaning in Vt. I guess.

  2. Correction: The “Blue Bridge” is the railroad bridge over the Winooski River adjacent to Intervale Ave in Burlington. Past proposals to study the feasibility of adding safe bicycle and pedestrian access to that bridge to connect to Burlington and Winooski went nowhere. The railroad flatly refused to even consider it.

It is infamous for having had multiple fatalities occur there as pedestrians still walk across it regardless the obvious danger and the no trespassing signs.

  3. Oops, please disregard that comment. I thought the picture showed the bridge at the mouth of the Winooski River between Burlington and Colchester.

  4. The history of the proposed pedestrian access, however, is accurate background information.

  5. Anyone wanting to build a dwelling in Vermont can expect to be burdened by all manner of requirements and code specifications. There are minimum insulation standards, smoke detector requirements and onerous septic standards required by the State. Towns have all kinds of of detailed zoning regs regarding setbacks, driveways and even the style of windows that are facing the road. Even the fire departments are in on the fun with driveway standards, window size requirements and other egress issues and more recently sprinkler systems required in single-family homes when you build “too far” from the fire station. After you satisfy all of the aforementioned bureaucracies, you pay for an occupancy permit affording you the privilege of moving in to your place.
And of course, you never really own a dwelling in Vermont. The day you are late paying your bloated property taxes, the wheels go into motion to take it all away from you. These requirements, including ownership or permission to use the land you build on are completely overlooked for those in the “free range human” community. Fire protection services are of course provided nonetheless, and in Burlington, you can also expect port-a-potties and dumpsters for your convenience.

  6. Well well well…..the overpaid, underworked, early retiring, business owning (while employed) had a camp fire to deal with?? Oh my. Two days on, four off…….absurd. They starting having to work with OD calls but they quickly created an overtime, OD, task force unit. So now, when “working” the chili can still get eaten while those earning overtime toward their pension number, can go do OD calls. The constant bilking of Burlington taxpayers will never end.

  7. there is nothing better than the smell of cooking your tent while setting by the camp fire//// a person whom wants to build their own house should not enter into a contract with a government permit/// you have got to stop paying off the the…………………///////////
