The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Board will hold a special meeting Thursday for a final vote on the furbearer rule, the Dept. of Fish & Wildlife announced today. The board meeting will follow a likely vote on the same rule Thursday morning by a legislative committee.
The furbearer rule was updated per Legislative directive in Act 159 and Act 165 of 2022, to implement best management practices that modernize trapping and improve the welfare of wildlife taken and to regulate the practice of hunting coyotes with dogs.
The ruling has been a hot potato between the board and the Legislative Committee on Administrative Rules, which favors a more hunting-and-trapping restrictive interpretation of the two 2022 laws.

The virtual meeting will take place at 5 p.m., Thursday, December 14. Most board members and department staff will be attending remotely. There is an in-person option for members of the public who cannot attend virtually at the Dewey Building, 1 National Life Drive, Montpelier, VT 05620.
All board meetings are open to the public. Details are provided in the agenda posted to the department’s website.
Information on the regulations and the process for updating the rule can be found on the department’s website.

Fish and Wildlife Board, Don’t budge ! If you give these disingenuous anti-hunters an inch, they’ll be back for the rst of the mile !
As well stated, wildlife mgmt in Vermont is at a tipping point. Do we follow the science of qualified, degreed, wildlife biologists, or conform to misguided activists, ruled by emotion alone? Activists who have intimidated, harassed, vandalized and assaulted, law abiding citizens? Whose ring leader has made endless, phone calls to her local police dept and sportsmen threating police action and law suits. If this is how legislation is enacted in Vermont, Montpelier may become a very ugly place.
I’m not against hunting but to me trapping is the cruelest thing ever. Especially if the hunter doesn’t check traps that way there supposed to
…may become…?
IMO the ugly started coming to Montpelier in the 1970’s. The descent into socialism really started kicking in with Howard Dean.

I hate to make everything about abortion, but this issue always begs the question: are those who are crying out the loudest and protesting the most vehemently against trapping coyotes the same folks who also support killing preborn children in Vermont? Because if so, I don’t know that there is anything more disingenuous, except perhaps saying that supporting the genocide of Jewish people might be okay depending on the context.
Lol! Now the TWO-THIRDS of all Vermont residents who oppose trapping (according to a survey taken by VT Fish & Wildlife) are those who promote the annihilation of human life developing in the womb? Conversely, I’d propose that all these (primarily) male individuals who obviously extract such gratification and satiation from torturing and then brutally murdering defenseless creatures – are those more likely who advocate, in kind, for the slaughter of the innocent of ANY species – as they neither recognize or accept any remorse in the extinguishment of life. And if this be the case, as I suspect it may, based upon their callous and inhumane treatment of God’s creatures – then I would highly suggest the imposition of celibacy…..unless and until they learn the value of all extant life.
