The Vermont State Police and the FBI plan a joint press conference on Tuesday afternoon in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the mysterious disappearance of Brianna Maitland, 17, in Montgomery.

Col. Matthew Birmingham, the director of the Vermont State Police and Special Agent in Charge Craig Tremaroli from the FBI office in Albany, N.Y. plan to outline some new resources that have been added to the wide-ranging nationwide investigation of the missing teen.

The press conference is planned for 1 p.m. at the new Vermont State Police Barracks on Vermont 2A near Interstate 89 exit 12.

Without a confession, the FBI and state police have both said through the years that DNA evidence will likely be the way the case is solved.

Maitland was last seen leaving work at the Black Lantern Inn in Montgomery about 11:20 p.m. March 19, 2004. She planned to go to the home of a friend where she had been staying, but never arrived, state police said.

The following day, her 1985 Oldsmobile 88 was located backed into an abandoned barn on the former Dutchburn property on Vermont 118 about a mile from the restaurant and no trace of Maitland. The building later burned to the ground in July 2016, the County Courier reported.

Because she was splitting time between her home and couch surfing with various friends, Maitland was never reported missing for four days, police said.
