A single-vehicle crash claimed the lives of an elderly couple from River Edge, New Jersey, on Dec. 23 near Carrs Lane on VT Route 22A in Bridport.

State Police say they reported to the scene at 11:27 a.m. where they found a 2015 Chevy Impala that had struck a telephone pole and overturned, coming to rest upside down.

The driver, Mark Axelrod, 78, and his passenger, Francine Axelrod, 76, were both wearing seatbelts but were pronounced deceased at the scene.

According to the preliminary investigation, the vehicle was headed south on VT Route 22A when it veered out of its lane for reasons currently unknown. The car subsequently collided with a telephone pole and flipped over.

Authorities have stated that neither speed nor impairment appear to be factors in the crash.

Tow truck struck on I-89 – Christmas Eve morning at 7:30 AM, Troopers with the Vermont State Police St. Albans Barracks responded to numerous weather-related motor vehicle incidents, including a single vehicle crash on I-89 in Georgia. They found a 2010 Toyota Tacoma off the right shoulder of the interstate.

Stone’s Towing arrived on scene and had requested a second truck to assist in the towing operation. The operator of the Tacoma (who initially crashed), Jamie Campbell, 46, of St. Albans was in his vehicle assisting Stone’s operators with guiding his vehicle onto the flatbed. During this process, a Dodge Durango was traveling south on Interstate 89 being operated by Krystal Lockerby, 38, of Highgate. Lockerby lost control of her vehicle and struck the tow truck and the Tacoma being loaded onto it.

Troopers quickly requested Emergency Medical Services for all occupants and operators. The Stone’s operators were evaluated for injury and Campbell was ultimately transported for suspected minor injuries.

The interstate was briefly shut down to allow for the safe and expedient removal of all vehicles involved. The Vermont State Police was assisted on scene by Georgia Fire, Fairfax Rescue, Stone’s Towing and the Department of Motor Vehicles.

This crash remains under investigation.

State Police remind operators to slow down and move over when approaching emergency vehicles on the roadways. Additionally, drive cautiously at all times especially in inclement weather.
