Vermont State Police have identified the man killed in a crash Friday afternoon on U.S. Route 302 in Orange as 78-year-old Melvin Pellerin of Berlin.
Troopers from the Berlin Barracks responded to the two-vehicle collision at about 3:26 p.m. March 20 near Provencher Lane. According to police, Pellerin was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado westbound toward Barre when his truck fishtailed on the snow-covered roadway, crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming 2024 GMC Sierra.
The impact caused catastrophic damage to Pellerin’s vehicle, with the cab separating from the frame. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the GMC, Michael Cavallero, 54, of Orange, was wearing a seat belt and sustained minor injuries, police said.
Pellerin was also reported to have been wearing a seat belt.
Weather and road conditions at the time of the crash were snowy, which investigators say contributed to the loss of control.
The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the incident or about Pellerin is asked to contact the Vermont State Police Berlin Barracks at 802-229-9191.
