Sections of the Caledonia County town of Lyndon remain cut off due to Monday night’s flash flooding, the Caledonian-Record reported this morning.

As reported yesterday, about 50 homes were lost in the Northeast Kingdom in the fourth major flood in just over a year.

This morning, the St. Johnsbury-based daily newspaper reported that about 50 East Lyndon homes are cut off, including the home of Lyndonville Police Chief Jack Harris. Not that it’s stopped him from fulfilling his duties. Tuesday he got to work by surmounting a washed-out bridge by erecting and climbing a 12-foot ladder, and then walked three miles to the closest accessible road, the CR said.

Harris said the East Lyndon flooding surprised locals because it came from three small waterways not previously deemed flood risks: Hawkins, Simpson and Sheldon Brook.

Due to lack of the anticipated need for flood insurance, no-one in the neighborhood is insured to pay for repairs, Harris said.

“The neighbors up here, this is something we never expected,” Harris reportedly said. “Most of us are now calling our insurance company and they’re telling us ‘you don’t have flood insurance, there’s nothing we can do.’ I know when I bought my house inspectors looked at it and said ‘you’re not even in the 500 year flood plain.’ Well guess what, we’re in year 501 because we got flooded.”

Sanders bemoans ‘demoralizing’ floods, urges efforts to reduce carbon emissions

Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) weighed in on the flooding with a press statement urging needy Vermonters to call or contact 211. “Let me be frank: Seeing flood after flood after flood is demoralizing,” he said.

Sanders also called for everyone to work harder to reduce carbon emissions.

“As I think most Vermonters know, these devastating floods are directly related to climate change,” Sanders said. “From flooding across Vermont, to the hottest days on record in many parts of our country and the world, to wildfires out west, climate change is real and causing devastating damage. Clearly, we must work together as a state, a nation, and a planet to cut carbon emissions and transition to a clean energy system that saves our planet and future generations.”

Adaptation vs. carbon emissions reduction?

Sanders said nothing specifically about adapting Vermont roads, bridges and property to cope with heavy flooding. However, commenters on Vermont Daily Chronicle have not been shy on that subject. One example is this comment from William Olenick on yesterday’s news coverage of the Caledonia County flooding:

“Take all the money spent on hairbrained laws dealing on climate fluxes and put that money on flood infrastructure projects, dam controls, dredging and levies then Vermont will be more prepared for future climate fluxes, that have always occurred throughout history.”

  1. Is Comrade Beenie beseeching the Communist Chinese, and India to reduce their carbon emissions, because unless they do we might we are just shooting ourselves in the foot .

  2. Re: “Well guess what, we’re in year 501 because we got flooded.”

Guess what. The climate is getting warmer… for now at least. It may now be a 100-year flood plain. Better to deal with it now by adapting rather than pretend you can modify the climate to the extent required to make everything as it was a couple of hundred years ago… if it was really significantly different back then than it is now.

    Adaptation vs. carbon emissions reduction?

The answer is a no brainer…. unless you’ve invested in the snake oil of carbon mitigation. Then you’ll likely want to get your money back BEFORE everyone figures out the scam.

  3. Please excuse the error in my post, (delete, we might) my editor is on vacation.

  4. they tried killing you with the covid kill shot, now their going to get rid of you by water bombing your property until you go broke and give up and leave/// just another conspiracy, nothing to see here folks////

    • In April of 2019, an official of the CCP met INDIVIDUALLY with: 1) Governor Scott, 2)Lt. Governor Zuckerman, and 3) Secretary of State Condos. The event, covered in an article published by the Chinese Consulate (my link to it is no longer active -hmmmm-; I implore anyone here to find and link to this article) described Vermont’s unique function as an oxygen bar, with a “simple and enthusiastic” populace.

If I had seen myself thinking this way 15 years ago, I would never have believed it.

  5. Typical liberal Bernie, instead of offering help or support, pulls the Climate Card and wants Vermonters to do and give up more. How does this guy keep getting reelected? He will look for a way to tax the weather, and you will pay for it.

  6. Leave it to Bernie to take a disaster where people lost there homes to tout how bad climate chage is a make a speech about thet!!

    • Good ole Bernie, the major crapologist in Government, All crap, no viable solutions and he would take a shovel to help., located in safe Washington DC where they are reported having a drought. Have to blame it on something, right Bernie, perhaps the Liberal Flatlanders will vote for you again. Expect you to leave DC horizontal like Robert Bird D-WVA. the KKK officer. The Bern knows what the media wants to hear, not Vermonters, so that’s the spew. The career politician. Use a shovel in your state Bern, if you know what it looks like. Mitts Bernie is a great guy. Noted so far the other two in Congress hasn’t muttered a word. Whats a flood they may ask. Vermont is so blessed with these A-holes.

  7. So unbelievably awful that our elected officials would use changes in our climate for their political gain. We don’t need electric cars, heat pumps, solar panels or windmills. Just regular dredging. Go to the CO2 Coalition for the truth about our weather.

    • They cause it so they can profit from it. They don’t want to fix the problem, only SEEM to want to fix the problem, so they can continue to profit from the cataclysms that they themselves maintain. Solving the problem: the real solutions involve efficiency, not buying our way out of the situation, which of course doesn’t support big business for either party. They also lose their platform if they actually fix anything.

That’s how politics works now: they need calamity to pretend to fight, because it is the only way they get votes. And I don’t confine that statement to within Party bounds. A sustainable, quiet life lived in concert with God’s will doesn’t breed the extremism required by our politicians. That said, that is what is needed, so that is what I aim to do.

    • A sustainable quiet life breeds strong people, great families, prosperity and a great country. Why wouldn’t they want this?

Because….a “white” Christian nationalist……can see through all the lies. Makes grifting more difficult, surely.

Any Christian of course can do this, but they really don’t want to throw a white male any dog bone….nope. It’s really their krytonite…..the Holy Spirit. May our people be filled with the Holy Spirit, guided by, in harmony with, strengthened by. I ask in Jesus’ name, amen.

  8. Thing to remember a substance that Liberals in Montpelier can’t comprehend. Water is an identity, needed for life. It’s passive and beautiful when conditions are right. Nothing may change that condition until conditions dictate otherwise. Then it becomes a mindless fluid, seeking the path of lest resistance, i.e.flooding.if allowed.
The White Ricer has experienced flooding. Many places the river bed has been so full of debris (as many rivers and babbling brooks have also). The rivers have become so shallow when the water floods places. A minnow couldn’t swim in the once established rivers and may be deposited in a farm land or town street.

I spoke / wrote about the current flooding. But this has been happening for YEARS. Politicians sit on their buns and don’t address serious issues. Believe it all started in the 1927 floods, 97 years ago. Solution, build anywhere above 1500 feet elevation and let Mother Nature do it’s thing. The saying “Can’t Fool Mother Nature. But people think otherwise. The thing I’ve learned experiencing disasters, is that there wouldn’t be any disaster unless people migrated to problem areas. No people, no disasters.

My two cents MVRA Make Vermont Real Again.

  9. Aloha to all & Blessings-Awesome comments by all! AND even better to see fellow Vermonters ‘speaking out’ about Vermont officialdom that needs a good swift kick off the planet and the whole political system, federal to local, needs to be scrubbed clean, just like they keep doing to these link article that Tyler A. is seeking. I had the original article, that now gives a ‘no longer exists, page not found’ message. The links below don’t provide the full scope of the original article but at least they have some sound bites, second one has photos. Furthermore, if ‘officialdom’ on all levels weren’t bedfellow and minions, catering to the UnRighteous elements that fall under evil, then we would probably have more currency and resources to tend to shoring up landmasses that have been compromised and afflicted by their so-called UnRighteous climate-green new deal initiatives that suit the elite needs and not main populace. While of course and simultaneously using ‘drones’ to ignite deluges that the likes of bernie sanders and the rest of the hooligans, keep promoting and akin to a catch 22, mindless insane loop of vomitous spewing that keeps being regurgitated from their lip service, fork tongue opening in their faces. Vermonters and America have 97 days to wake up, denounce and detox from officialdom, put a screeching halt to all elements of human trafficking, including everything to do with ‘narcotics’ along with all social service ‘energy sucking vampire programs’ officialdom created for main populace to keep them ‘victimized -enslaved and impoverished’ and start putting common sense things in place along with Righteous Human Beings, that align with Righteousness, Transparency and put PEOPLE above PROFIT. 10. “As I think most Vermonters know, these devastating floods are directly related to climate change,” Sanders said.

I’ve noticed this false narrative technique used very commonly for several years now in the media. Let’s call it the “assumption without any evidence accepted as fact” fallacy. The op-ed pieces and letters to the editor section of my local newspaper are filled with this kind of invective and false journalism. Just take the first part of Bernie’s sentence, and then plug in whatever lie, supported by zero evidence, you wish to propagate in the second half of the sentence. For example:

“As I think most Vermonters know, President Trump colluded with Russia.”

“As I think most Vermonters know, President Trump should be impeached.”

“As I think most Vermonters know, masks and vaccines and boosters prevent people from getting COVID and spreading COVID.”

“As I think most Vermonters know, anyone who insists on not wearing masks or not getting vaccinated is selfish and doesn’t care about other people.”

“As I think most Vermonters know, tried and tested medicines such as hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin are useless and should be banned in helping alleviate the symptoms of COVID.”

“As I think most Vermonters know, Joe Biden won the 2020 election fair and square, and Donald Trump tried to interfere with it because he couldn’t face the fact that he lost.”

“As I think most Vermonters know, Donald Trump incited an insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, 2021.”

“As I think most Vermonters know, anyone who was at the Capitol on January 6th who supported Donald Trump and believed the true results of the 2020 election were rigged and stolen, are domestic terrorists and should be locked up in solitary confinement indefinitely without due process.”

“As I think most Vermonters know, Joe Biden has been a good president.”

“As I think most Vermonters know, Joe Biden has been doing a good job at preventing illegal immigration at our borders.”

“As I think most Vermonters know, those who earn or have more money than those who earn or have less are greedy and should be shamed and obligated to give some of what they have to others.”

“As I think most Vermonters know, the choice to poison and rip apart limb from limb developing babies in the womb is not murder, but rather a choice made between a woman and her doctor, and one in which the government has no place.”

“As I think most Vermonters know, the demonically inspired evil and satanic rape, murder, and butchery committed by Hamas against innocent Israeli women, children, and men on October 7th is Israel’s fault for being an oppressive imperialistic genocidal nation intent on purposely harming and annihilating the residents of Gaza.”

Unfortunately, what most Vermonters (or at least those who get out and vote) DO NOT know is that Bernie is full of his initials.

  11. An 8-inch rains storm is a small section of the world is NOT climate change. It is most certainly a catastrophic event in a small location.

See how they take one very small event and make a world issue?
    It’s very real.
Its very disturbing and a huge casualty
And it instills fear in people, that the world is going to end.

This is also done ROUTINELY with our police; Vermont Digger does an excellent job toward our police. Reading their news, you’d think the only people breaking crimes are the police!

Sophisticated propaganda is always true, but NOT the whole truth.

    Fact: some cops are racists
    Fact: some cops are bad.

Fact: most all of the interaction the police have with citizens are excellent, they leave this out.

This is how they do it.
Then the keep the populace dumb, uneducated and unable to see the truth and they can manipulate you out of all your money and freedom.

    It’s the Marxist way…

  12. Did Bernie make his statement before fleeing on vacation to parts unknown for a month? Will he be riding an electric bike around Lake Champlain or flying on a fossil fueled jet to wherever he and Jane’s heart’s desire?

Witchcraft wordcraft. Today’s word is “demoralizing.” What say the language experts: “The word “demoralize” has wide usage in everyday language, meaning “to deprive a person of spirit or courage, to throw a person into disorder or confusion, and to dishearten or bewilder.” It has been applied in a range of clinical and nonclinical settings, where its components and phenomenology have been described in detail. Any persistent and difficult life situation may cause a person to be demoralized, evidenced by feelings of being “unable to cope,” and this will depend on the nature of the threat and the person’s resources, both internal strengths and vulnerabilities and external supports. Any resulting demoralization will diminish confidence and drive, and further erode a person’s ability to cope or master the situation. It is, in essence, a form of depression.”

So, are we “Vermont Strong” or a demoralized, down-trodden, defeatist group of unfortunates – which is another word the elites used in olden days to demoralize and bamboozle the public at large.

I have a word for our Congressional delegation, elected officials and bought off bureaucrats – Judgement! To be preceeded by the words indictment and prosecution.
