Drunken hit-and-run tailgater victimizes 75-year-old woman: police

A two-vehicle collision on US Route 2 near Bona Road in Concord Friday morning, January 12 led to a DUI arrest after a hit-and-run incident, according to Vermont State Police.

The incident occurred around 9:20 a.m. when Claudette Morehouse, 75, of Concord, called authorities to report that her 2018 GMC Canyon had been repeatedly struck by a white Toyota truck, which then left the scene.

Shortly after, a witness alerted police to a white Toyota truck crashed in the woods about 4 miles from the initial crash site.

Troopers located the Toyota, a 2008 Tacoma, and identified the driver as 21-year-old William Morse, also from Concord.

Morse displayed signs of intoxication and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was transported to Northeast Vermont Regional Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and DUI processing.

Following the investigation, Morse faces charges including Grossly Negligent Operation, Duty to Stop at Crashes, and Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs. He also received two Vermont Civil Violation Complaints for Driving to the Right and Following too Closely. Morse is scheduled to appear in court to respond to the charges. – Newport Dispatch

Arrests follow Burlington gunfire – Burlington police Thursday announced the identities of two men arrested following an Old North End gunfire incident. 

On January 10, at about 7:19 PM, officers from the Burlington Police Department responded to a Drew Street gunfire incident, during which two rounds struck two parked vehicles, one of which was occupied at the time.

Neither Carlos Barrera, 34, nor William T. Mealy, Jr, 30, are known to have been directly associated with the gunfire incident, which remains under investigation, police say. Both men have been arraigned at court. 

Barrera was taken into custody for an arrest warrant for violating an abuse prevention order in Williston. On Thursday he was released on recognizance. Mealy was taken into custody  for the crime of Fugitive of Justice (Arrest Prior to Requisition) from Connecticut. On Thursday he waived extradition and was held without bail.

Man dies in store parking lot – Police say employees at the Stewarts Shop in Arlington reported an unresponsive male in a vehicle parked within the store parking lot.  The Vermont State Police responded along with Arlington Rescue and Arlington Fire.  Attempts were made at resuscitation however were ultimately unsuccessful.

Thefts from vehicles – State police are investigating multiple thefts from vehicles in Highgate, Fairfield, and Swanton, reported between Jan. 11-12. The reported victim is Scott Wimble, 58, of Swanton.,Anyone with information is encouraged to call the State Police in St. Albans.
