A Rottweiler left to die in a St. Albans apartment is being loved back to life, according to Vermonters Against Animal Cruelty and Abandonment.
The following was posted on the VAACA Facebook page Dec. 12:
“Last week, Potter’s Angels Rescue took in Hank on an emergency basis. He is a 1.5 yr old Rottweiler that once weighed over 100 lbs and was found locked inside a home in St. Albans at just 53 lbs.
“The owner shut off all utilities and left him to die, cold and alone. Luckily someone found him before it was too late. After being rushed to the vets and provided emergency care, he was moved into a medical foster. He received a body condition score of 1 out of 9 by two separate veterinarians, determining he was in the the final stage of starvation before death.
“The weekend was touch and go as his body adjusted to receiving food again. When an animal is this emaciated, feeding them too much too soon can kill them so the refeeding process is slow starting at just 1/3 can of prescribed food per day separated in small meals every few hours.
“To put this in perspective that’s like one bite of food for my healthy Rottweilers split up into meals throughout the day. At his vet visit yesterday he had gained 3.5 lbs and we are increasing his food daily now.
“He will need continued medical fostering and vet care to rehabilitate him to a healthy pup. His personality is starting to show and it turns out he’s 100% lovebug!! We will not give up until charges are pursued and are supporting law enforcement in this ongoing investigation. We will share updates on this case as we receive them.”

Sickening. That person needs to be charged & tried under Donald Trump’s newer FEDERAL crime law (PACT) – a fully bipartisan measure that is an acronym for “PREVENTING ANIMAL CRUELTY & TORTURE” that carries both fines and a prison sentence of up to SEVEN years for willful abuse & truly disordered acts such as this.
Obviously, the state can locate the previous tenants and subpoena vet records or AKC (or similar registry) documents to prove ownership.
Despicable, twisted degenerates. If ONLY your only eventual punishment for this would merely be the judicial system……..but wait! There’s more!
Vermont – STEP UP! Enforce the law for once maybe??
Rottweilers, probably the most abused dogs in the USA… the go-to for every wannabe drug dealer and arms saleman… they are just beasts they say… no soul, no feelings, no right to a pain free life… I’m no PETA fan by any means, but my ‘love thy neighbor’ extends to the wild and domestic creatures I share air with… breath of life… Spirit… I stop for turtles, rescue ‘road kills’ before they can be, and talk to birds and wildlife who come to know my voice… I’ve spoken with bears too in their habitat… treating as I would wish to be treated with peace and care for them… airy fairy? No. The reward is in the love and trust one receives for fair and loving treatment… there is no greater pleasure than to realize the critters know and appreciate your presence…even if only for the food… and non-scarey treatment.
Fie on those who treat beasts like beasts.
Afterall, without the breath of Life He gave us… that is all WE are too…
Me TOO! Great post. Sadly, many on VDC somehow, someway disagree. Despite God & his word, the Saints, and even their hero President Donald J. Trump openly and obviously expressing the same opinions as do we.
I presume much of it has to do with the way some, who are older, were raised. Though once one becomes a full-fledged adult, I would think some degree of self-reflection and independent thought and religious study might enter into such considerations. Sadly, for some, it doesn’t appear to.
In any case, as a believer of humane treatment for all creatures great and small, Hank received a Christmas reprieve from his creator.
Thank you to everyone at Potter’s Angels.
BTW, Donald Trump’s law also explicitly bans “animal crush videos” that are, wait for it, videos that depict actual animals being burned, crushed, & otherwise tortured & killed as men sit “pleasuring” themselves to the acts. Yes indeed, totally normal behavior is animal killing for the sake of animal killing alone. Totally normal.
Especially for children & adolescents who grow up to become serial killers – according to FBI statistics.
A very timely rescue, and I’m sure there are dozens of inquiries about adopting him. However, whenever these cases come up, it demonstrates that most people living in Vermont these days express more disgust about an abandoned dog than they ever would about an abandoned unborn human being. Wishing you well, Hank.
Not I. Acts meant to injure and kill other living beings are both atrocities that need
both immediate harsh punishment and redress. Both the killing of babies and animals however both share one similarity – they are both horrendous acts perpetrated against the most innocent among us.
President Trump who passed PACT (as described above) is also pro-life. As am I. As are many.
These diabolical acts are not mutually exclusive and if you have the capability to kill a dog in such a disgusting torturous fashion, guess what else you are probably capable of?
Will the owner hang in the public square for their wicked crimes???? No, in one week everybody will forget about it.
That owner (former owner) should be locked in an abandoned apartment with no food, water, or heat for a month. If he’s lucky, someone will find and rescue him. If not? Oh well …
The worst person in the world is a person who would harm an animal.
“Every world has dogs or their equivalent, creatures that thrive on companionship, creatures that are of a high order of intelligence although not of the highest, and that therefore are simple enough in their wants and needs to remain innocent. The combination of their innocence and their intelligence allows them to serve as a bridge between what is transient and what is eternal, between the finite and the infinite. For those who despair that their lives are without meaning and without purpose, for those that dwell in a loneliness so terrible that it has withered their hearts, for those who hate because they have no recognition of the destiny they share with all humanity, for those that would squander their lives in self-pity and in self-destruction because they have lost the saving wisdom with which they were born, for all these and many more, hope waits in the dreams of a dog, where the sacred nature of life may be clearly experienced without the all but blinding filter of human need, desire, greed, envy and endless fear. And here in dream woods and fields, along the shores of dream seas, with a profound awareness of the playful Presence abiding in all things. – Dean Koontz 2001 – One Door Away From Heaven – Pg 670 & 671
This is criminal activity perpetrated by the lowest element of our species. These people must be sentenced to extensive jail time, financial reparation and lifetime support of this precious puppy. Sickening does not even begin to describe this tragedy!!! These people are what we scrape off the bottom of our shoes.
Agreed! And as Sword of Truth writes – atrocities committed against both domestic AND wild animals are both repugnant.
As author and veterinarian James Harriot told us: ….And the Lord God made them ALL!
poor Hank, I hope he finds his forever home after his recovery.
Where is that poor dog now? I would gladly take him. I hope you find the monster who left him to die and prosecute to the fullest extent the law.
