Montpelier, Vt. – The Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has launched the Blue Envelope Program for Vermont drivers on the autism spectrum to make routine traffic stop interactions easier, safer, and less stressful.
The DMV modeled the new program on similar programs in other states and worked with the University of Vermont Autism Collaborative to develop the program. The blue envelope alerts law enforcement officers that the driver has autism, and printed instructions on the envelope help the officers to adapt their approach.
The blue envelope is also designed to hold the drivers’ documents that are essential during traffic stops: a copy of their driver’s license, their vehicle registration, proof of insurance, and contact information for their supporters.
The goals of the program are to enhance information for law enforcement officers in order to promote empathy, patience, and more positive interactions, and to reduce anxiety for people on the autism spectrum during traffic stops.
“The blue envelope is a symbol of our commitment to inclusivity and understanding,” said Commissioner Wanda Minoli. “It is an important step forward to see that every driver can feel safe and respected on the road. We hope to build bridges between law enforcement and the autism community, and to foster a culture of awareness and compassion that benefits everyone involved.”
The Blue Envelope Program is free and easy to participate in, and it does not require medical records or any type of registration. To request a blue envelope, customers may visit any DMV location or complete the online form to have an envelope mailed to them.

we always need another grant or tax payer funded program/// no required medical records/// must be inclusive and collaborative////
Oh good Lord. And how do we know that these envelopes will be prepared ahead of time to be handed to the officer when requested? Does that have an envelope too? Maybe just paint the car blue with a message on it, like: I’m Autistic. Or any of the other special classes. We all need to be made aware, don’t we? I mean, I might want to stay away from certain drivers if they’re not well.
You can only do this “I’m different” nonsense but for so long. Perhaps we need to have arm bands and cars painted with signs and special flags on our windows.
Why do I feel like they’re trying to make normal people as lunatic as they are?
RBG, let me ask you a question? How does this affect your life at all? Do you know anyone with autism? Your questions are so stupid that they don’t do anything other than show what an ass you are. Somebody who is autistic isn’t different, they are neurodivergent.
How would you like it if you had to drive a car that said “old ass Boomer on board?” You probably wouldn’t but I’d like to know so I can stay away or point and laugh. Pathetic, sad little comments like yours are driving people further away from the Republican party every day. Seriously, given the choice to say nothing or move on, you just decided to be ignorant. Hope you feel better about yourself.
Impaired driving doesn’t seem to be an issue anymore – if you’ve driven around in the past few years the amount of dangerous manuvers and speed demons is off the hook. I’m less concerned about blue envelopes and more concerned about blue helmets showing up in the near future. Chicago seems to have a lot of blue helmets in the crowd this week….interesting color choice for riot gear. Carry on!
Now let’s try to ACTUALLY learn what RGB was more likely conveying with his comments: That all people are and always have been intrinsically “different” from one another in one respect or another since time immemorial. There are men. There are women. There are Caucasians, Asians, & African Americans. There are those with & without dizzying arrays of disabilities such as seizure disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, & Cystic Fibrosis, etc. – all already protected by the A.D.A. under the auspices of the CDC. which, as usual, doesn’t require the little state of Vermont to swoop in with their politically correct, multicultural, hyper-sensitive, and exclusionary labels in order to label them ad nauseum.
However, because Vermont feels thus obsessively compelled – Vermont actually becomes MORE segregative, not less, as they chronically decree the differences between us as opposed to the innumerable similarities that bind us together as a people or citizenry, that being: Americans; (when LEGALLY declared as per Federal Law) that being human beings.
As far as Chris’ assertion that more people are being driven away from the GOP? Au, Contraire lad, (I make the distinction in age there by utilizing the term “lad” merely to remind the youngin’s on here that with age obviously comes wisdom as the adage goes) but according to the most recent polling’s from 2023 – GOP voter registrations have been increasing steadily since ’21 and Republicans & Democrats are now nearly evenly split with Republicans actually holding a 1% lead over Democrats for the first time in decades. In fact, it appears to be the “great divide” pushed by the democrat political party that is now driving people away, not unifying them.
I think I’ve gotcha, RGB. It often takes another Boomer to comprehend the written word (especially if it were to be written in cursive) – in understanding that ALL peoples become “old” as youngster Chris appeared to imply – but ONLY if you’re lucky!
“Do you feel lucky, punk?” Eastwood might just query Chris after his usual naughty word-laden tirade………..
“Do you feel lucky, punk?” Are you threatening me with something the old man who yelled at the chair said? I like how you’re adding a quote from something that happened sixty years ago now, makes you sound extra with it. Compare Sophia Loren to Kamala like Trump next to show how with it you are.
I love your cunning attempts to be smart with me, because they are neither cunning or smart. Whether you’re ranting about men in a thread about bears or getting really upset that the state offered autistic people a blue envelope that holds their stuff, I can count on it only making sense to you. And I can do cursive just fine, glad I got something out of all those years at catholic school.
And for your facts about voter registration, according to Pew Research (you’ll never believe any source I present you) About two-thirds of voters ages 18 to 24 (66%) associate with the Democratic Party, compared with 34% who align with the GOP. There are 11 million more registered Democrats than Republicans, so yeah we need a message change. Everyone is sick of the bullying. The Phil Scott method works, watch Trump lose the popular vote for the third time, because people are sick of the bullying. It’s almost as lame as yelling at a chair.

Hey, Let’s not get in the way of Big Pharma vaccinating all our children so they can experience SIDS and Autism, not let’s not look at the root of the problem.
Get the mask on, we want compliance.
They are complete liars, how is it the Amish don’t have SIDS nor Autism? Asking for a friend.
all on the person with autism, eh?
Nothing for those doing the stop?
So patronizing and big-daddy-ish… on you not the cop dealing with your autism… clear disconnect on what autism in society IS.
I’ll leave it at that.
Pssssshaw….gestures mean nothing.
The program does have a noble purpose, because it recognizes that some of the steroid monsters in law enforcement have no patience, and frequently escalate encounters unnecessarily. However, I wonder if it is really true that the DMV does not retain a digital photo and personal information on their computer, as implied here:
“At no other time will the DMV or law enforcement have access to your information as a part of this program”

Chris: I think I’m quite smart, and I think you are consistently quite threatened. Like a consummate leftist, you are “offended” by virtually every statement nearly everyone makes, including my accurate statement that cursive is no longer being taught in many schools as of the end of the last decade or thereabouts – it had nothing to do with you personally, though you took it that way in rather narcissistic and hypersensitive fashion.
As far as my statistics, you, as usual, are the incorrect party. I made no reference whatsoever about any particular demographic group in my correct statement that there are simply more registered Republicans as of 2023 than there were registered democrats, and that is a fact that cannot be refuted. You are the one who broached the topic of the veritable kids within the 18 – 24-year-old age bracket, not me, and to that upon which I can merely repeat yet another famous & well-regarded quote that is quite apropos: “If you are not a liberal at 25, you have no heart – but if you are not a Conservative at 35, you have no brain.”
What year did you receive your diploma from that Catholic high school again?
Threatened by who? An an unmedicated old lady and I am clearly the only person that gives you any attention, which is why you can’t stay away. You don’t know how to cite a source, use a reply button. You were amusing, now its quite sad. Talk about threatened, no one hear can even tell me how a blue envelope for Autistic people impacts you.
I think that I’m done with you because the only thing you’ve taught me is that when you argue with an moron, they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. Prove me wrong, just send me the link that says there are more registered Republicans than Democrats. You won’t though, you’ll move the goalposts again, like you always do, because MAGA’s aren’t rooted in reality and will cost us normals a chance to make change in Montpelier.
Btw I got my diploma at gods not real high school. You should attend, it will set you free.
ahem……
CHRIS: Again, in terms of reality now – your comments receive virtually no “likes” on this site, you appear to know no better than to cuss & insult others over their “ages” – (as if being a Gen Z’er or in other words barely just a baby as opposed to being a Baby Boomer is somehow enviable) you possess nothing less than the associated potty mouth of those of your age and with all that demonstrate a definitive lack of life-experience. Once again, I remind you that with age comes wisdom, something you apparently can’t grasp in light of your rather novel post-pubescent lack of maturity.
Your chronic temper tantrums directed at God for all to see wherein you simply impulsively spew the same nonsensical statement not rooted in fact or substantiated in science re: your atheism – are more than obviously regurgitated by the socialist heathens & neo-Pagens whom you are so enthralled with, only again give testament to your ‘yout and aforementioned lack of like-experience.
Try: NYTimes: “More Voters Shift To Republican Party Closing Gap With Democrats” – with stats taken from 2023. As far as most updated registrations, try: Newsweek, July 2024 “GOP voter registration Surpasses Democrat in Majority of States”. GOP registrations have increased exponentially since ’23, this being stated, no stats can reflect exacting data as several states do not require voters to choose a party in order to register to vote. However, democrats – as you posed – do not outnumber republicans any longer. (At least those LEGALLY registered and constitutionally eligible to vote…………valid identification not withstanding!!)
