A 31 year old DCF worker from Swanton was arraigned on sex abuse charges Thursday, September 12 because, police say, she had a two-year sexual relationship with a boy in her custody.
According to the Chittenden Unit for Sexual Investigations, on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, CUSI was referred a case from the Vermont Department for Children & Families (DCF) regarding the alleged sexual abuse of a victim that began when he was a juvenile in DCF custody. The abuse was reportedly perpetrated by a former DCF worker, Sonja Herman, 31, that was working with the victim in a professional capacity.
At the time of the initial report to CUSI last year, Herman was a licensed foster parent currently fostering two children. Detective Peatman was assigned to this investigation along with Family Services Worker Tineka Mitchell from DCF’s Residential Licensing and Special Investigations division.
CUSI developed probable cause that Herman engaged in a sexual relationship with a youth in which she was working with, through her duties as a Family Services Worker with DCF. This sexual relationship spanned over several years, during which time DCF had legal custody of the youth. It is further alleged that Herman supplied the youth with alcohol, and they would also use marijuana together.
On July 31, 2024, Herman’s attorney accepted a citation on behalf of Herman, to appear in Chittenden County Superior Court for charges of Sexual Assault. On Thursday, September 12, 2024, Herman appeared in Chittenden County Superior Court and was arraigned on charges of Sexual Assault.
Herman was released by the Honorable Judge on Pretrial Conditions of Release, including that one that prohibits Herman from supervising and/or providing care for children under the age of 18.

How repeatedly disgusting and totally expected. Oh, well. Let’s just slough it off. We Vermonters (though I have no right to call myself such since I have only lived in Vermont for 50 years) slough off so many more egregious infractions of our rights day by day, week by week, year by year, state-beside-state, juisdiction by jurisdiction. Lock your cars, doors, and windows, and double down on the protective messages you never thought you needed to offer your children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and yourself.
This is why all government employees should be drug tested. Public servants need to be held accountable and there can be no double standard in this society.
Her use of weed and alcohol are perfectly legal. Her furnishing either to an underage person is NOT legal. The VSEA state worker’s union would NEVER allow any kind of drug testing and they, along with the VTNEA teacher’s union own the Vermont legislature, lock, stock and barrel…
She will plead innocent by reason of insanity, she’s crazy about that young stuff.
I’m confused – she was cited having a two year relationship, but the relationship spanned several years? Appears no one bothered check on these kids because they were placed with one of the State’s own unexperienced lackies? The State has a lot to answer for on this case – yet, they won’t answer – likely won’t be asked either. They will cover their behinds, State prosecutor, and the judge will help in that regard.
Reportedly, she has a BS in psycology, Champlain College 2015. With such a degree and employment code of conduct, she didn’t know what she was doing was wrong or illegal? She is well versed in courts by her resume – or should be. Perhaps her degree and profession helped facilitate the abuse, cover it up, and hide it. Jezebel spirits…they are dangerous and sociopathic.
Her most vociferous protector would be the public sector union that represents her. They do NOT represent the public interest or the safety of children.
Another state ‘hire’ who is arraigned for a criminal act? Will most likely get the liberal judicial treatment…Catch…Given a bandage to soothe the hurt from the gentle slap on the wrist she receives… Released under her own cognizance…and Free to roam Vermont forever after.
As much as the liberal leadership in Vermont goes on about “gender equity”, a woman on child predation will never be treated as seriously as a man on child equivalent.
