by Paul Dame
VTGOP Chairman Paul Dame today responded to recent inquiries to the state party about the candidate rule that prohibits the party from supporting convicted felons:
“The Vermont State Republican Party has a rule that it will not promote or support a convicted felon running for office. With this rule comes the option for our Executive Committee to exempt candidates on a case-by-case basis. In the past, such exceptions have been made for candidates who had mitigating circumstances including the fact that the candidate had completed their sentence and turned their life around and demonstrated a capacity to be of service to the community. In the past this has been done because we believe in second chances. Currently our executive committee has not met to even discuss what, if any, action we would take, and whether or not such action would be necessary. Previously this rule has only been implemented after a candidate has already become the party’s nominee. In the case of President Trump that wouldn’t be necessary until after the Convention.
The Vermont Republican Party has always had as its focus its local candidates who are Vermonters working to make our state a better place, and whether the executive committee decides to make an exception to this rule, it will remain the case that donors to the state party will see their money going primarily to help recruit and train candidates who serve here in Vermont.
Our state party rules, along with the RNC rules require that the tens of thousands of Vermont voters who supported Trump in Vermont’s Presidential Primary be represented at the National Convention. So I don’t expect this prohibition of promoting felons to prevent those delegates from being awarded to Trump at the Convention. The people of Vermont spoke in March and our rules compel those delegates to cast those votes as they are bound to do.
As someone who had run on the issues of criminal justice reform in my previous campaigns, it has been incredibly disheartening to see Democrats expose themselves as absolute hypocrites the moment that it became politically expedient to do. In the past Democrats have made the case that people should be able to overcome encounters with the criminal justice system. Democrats used to believe that sometimes people were found guilty because of bias in the courts. Democrats used to believe that the rest of their life shouldn’t be defined because of a single mistake. It has become clear that this whole time this rhetoric was just something Democrats said to get elected, and win support from certain Demographics – but they didn’t really mean it. Trump’s conviction has had the immediate effect of giving Republicans a greater capacity for understanding issues in our criminal justice system, and have turned Democrats into zealots for punishment – at least when the person accused is unlikely to vote for them.
It’s worth noting that Several Vermont Democrats have committed crimes and Democrat party rules have not prevented them from serving.
Christopher Bates was convicted of a class 4 felony aggravated DUI and had an outstanding arrest warrant issued from the state of Illinois. He also has multiple other run-ins with the law prior to that:
http://www.truenorthreports.com/arrest-warrant-and-unanswered-questions-plague-bennington-county-democrat
Current State Rep Jim Carroll is currently facing DUI charges as well after being stopped just outside of the State House where he planned on arriving at the Capitol despite having a blood alcohol level above the legal limit.
https://vtdigger.org/2024/03/07/dui-arraignment-for-bennington-lawmaker-delayed-as-he-takes-part-in-treatment/
The Vermont Democratic Party also filed embezzlement charges against their own employee Brandon Batham back in 2019
https://vtdigger.org/2019/08/19/amid-embezzlement-scandal-democratic-chair-says-he-should-have-acted-sooner/
Despite the established history of these kinds of problems Vermont Democrats have had in the past few years, they still do not have any rules preventing convicted criminals from servings as staff or as elected officials in their party. So obviously they must think there isn’t a problem if Democrats do it. It’s clear that Democrats think that committing crimes is only a problem if you are a Republican. This is no surprise to anyone who has seen the double standard Democrats have played by for years. And it’s one of the reasons that Vermonters need to vote for the principled Vermont Republicans running for the legislature this year.”

what if the convicted felon is found latter that they were not guilty////
JEEZ!!! We never thought of that.
If Gov. Scott had his way Trump would have been drawn and quartered by now! The VT Republican Party has become a joke with flip flop Phil at the top.
Stand by your felon.
Just wondering if you would consider yourself a felon if you were found guilty in a kangaroo court like the one Trump was forced to attend..
Anyone that’s alive and well realizes this was a fraudulent trial against President Trump with
“TRUMPED” up charges.
Each and every one of you that finds humor and what happened to the greatest president in recent history should hope you never face the same type of third world tactics if you are accused of something you never did..
<<>>>
Will do, Brian. And no doubt you will stand by all of yours.
Yeah, like you stood by yours. All your Commiecrat friends tried to make a hero out of convicted felon George Floyd. Or maybe you forgot. Bill Clinton commuted the sentences of Susan Rosenberg and Linda Sue Evans who placed a bomb that tore the second floor Senate wing of the capitol in an attempt to assassinate U. S. Senators at the request of NY Congressman Jerry Nadler in 1983. According to Commiecrats Jan 6th was the first terrorist attack on the capitol.
But we’re fine with those who don’t defend the constitution, their sworn duty. We’re fine with protecting criminals within both parties.
If Trump came to Vermont to speak, he could easily have the largest gathering of any political leader within our boarders by 2-4 times any previous record, for the entire history of Vermont.
Why don’t you invite him to our state Paul?
Does this announcement surprise any of the 112,704 Vermonters who vote republican in our state and voted for DJT last election?
Hey Paul, wondering why you have no candidate, no money, no organization that could get anything done? Here’s your sign.
Oh, and we can vote for those “against” republicans, that’s ok…..course it’s because you all are part of the bigger club, the administrative state, aka Uniparty,
For those who don’t have a marxist decoder ring, what he is really saying is you won’t support anyone who votes against the uniparty. Vote uniparty. Support Uniparty, that is what Paul is truly saying.
Neil, just seeing this on Wednesday morning, I’m often a day late and here in VT, ALWAYS a dollar short…but that was my good laugh for the day, thanks.
If Trump came to Vermont again to speak, no doubt, he would stiff us again.

This is no surprise, since Mr. Dame and the Vt. GOP already denounced Trump as the candidate. They don’t seem to be concerned about the decreased support from some Vt. (forever) Republicans. I personally know two well known former Rs that have changed to Independent.
Here’s a fun video. If VTGOP wanted to win anything they’s invite the most popular presidential candidate in our nation’s history to Vermont. They would give him a hero’s welcome…..my guess is they won’t’ do that. They really like losing, it’s part of the plan to keep the administrative state in complete control of Vermont.

I believe Scott is complicit in helping keep big government in control as evidenced by his disdain for Trump (BEFORE Jan 6) and his support for Niki the swamp lizard Haley who whole heartedly supports everything D.C.
Are people serious? Trump couldn’t put on a defense. The Judge and his daughter in DemocRAT politics up to their necks. Jury instructions were questionable. There are even questions if the charges weren’t fabricated up to felony counts. I’ve heard of Nazi and Imperial Japan trial stories that were just as tainted. Vermont RINO Party, please stop the BS.
Doesn’t pretty much every convicted felon say that the jury was wrong, the judge was out to get him, and the system is rigged?
I know Donald J Trump is not a ” Saint ” and all for all these Vermont so-called Conservatives better wake up, if you ” believe ” that DJT had a fair trial, then you need to change parties, and the crime was what again ??
Donald J Trump will be the candidate for the Republican Party, in jail or not we all could see the scam trial, DemocRATs and RINOs are scared S-less, as they know that things are going to change for them and their cronies
Wake up people…….they don’t care, it’s all about the power by hook or by crook !!
Why call Trump a felon until this all gets rectified? Liberals will jump at anything anti-Rep. Millions know who and for who Justice system is for. Why are the polls show a huge increase for Trump and donations (by “little” people. Too many shepople are indoctuunated my the Media and don’t have any mental capabilities to research and get educated to real facts. Can’t wait for election time.
Would people against Trump want to be tried by the same that prosecuted Trump, with little Constitutional rights? Just based on achievements what Trump did as Prez vs. BO & Biden, tells a lot. These are the facts, jump all over me and put your best Liberal face on. Libs are no better today than with BO & Biden, get real. How much is you gas costing for instance, and depleted wallet?
Don’t forget former Senator Deb Ingram…and Rep. Chea Waters Evan’s…Representative Stephen Carr….and the list goes on of Dems who committed crimes…and walked away with no repercussions…
Also what about Bill C’s pay off to his affairs and HC’s crimes that got our soldiers killed. What about all the crimes of BO Etc Etc Didn’t this charge against DJT just set the precedence to now go back and charge all the past presidents with their crimes
If this is the hill paul dame and his executive committee wants to have the VT GOP die on, so be it.
I have no doubt that such an action will delight the governor and other never trumpers- but it will cause further erosion of the GOP in Vermont, rendering the republican party completely impotent.
Thank you, Paul Dame, for pointing out the hypocrisy of the Democrats. Let’s not forget: https://vermontdailychronicle.com/ag-donovan-planned-parenthood-in-taxpayer-supported-collusion-klar-alleges/
It seems appropriate to address the media that is taunting the VT GOP to make a statement on Trump’s conviction, yet we all know it was a sham, for real.
And let’s not forget Jill Krowinski’s oversight of PP’s illegal campaign activities in violation of state law: https://www.vrlc.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/95429_VRLC_Newsletter_SpringSummer_R1-1FINAL-2.pdf
Two tier justice system.
Vermont’s GOP is irrelevant. They say they will use their money to support local candidates but they can’t get candidates. Because they are not Republicans. At best, they are RINO’s and even that is being extremely generous.
Vermont’s conservative voters already see through the “convicted felon” bs. They will vote Trump with or without Paul Dame’s permission.
For the Dems, this is a game. It is only a talking point to fuel their otherwise very weak campaign. They will delay the court appeal until after the election and -when this conviction is overturned – they will stop talking about it.
The Dems last hope is to win over some very very low information voters.
He is not a felon just because a CORRUPT democrat run (of course) so-called legal system says he is. Anyone who thinks that trial was legit is a damned fool.
I find it hilarious that “leaders” and talking heads of all stripes are resorting to gaslighting and lying to persuade people to believe what is clearly unlawful and unethical. Details are not important when it comes to psyops.
No one is above the law, but only a select few are entitled to due process under the said law? If there is an officer of any court who supports what Bragg, Merchan, and company have done – they must be disbarred and debenched post haste.
Since 2020, the State of Vermont has done more to cover up criminal conduct and crimes against humanity than their counterparts in New York, Massachusetts, Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin, etc. etc. No worries, the Truth is coming out like a fire hose. The panic and fear mongering is off the charts. AOC and McCabe fretting about being arrested? Why? Why are they afraid? They don’t trust the legal system to do the right thing?
It’s very simple. If Paul Lame and the rest of his never Trumper RINO’s take Trump off the ballot, I for one will be writing in DONALD J. TRUMP.
If I can’t vote for the Republicans of my choice. I will not be voting for any VT Republicans at all.
Where is Dame’s “I am stupid” sign?
71,000,000 people voted for Trump, not for Republicans.
What we are concerned about is the likes of Balint taking campaign ad money, stolen through Ukraine, to buy 1,000,000 worth of mailed color glossy photographs of her.
This must be stopped.
“ Balint, who made history as the first openly LGBTQ+ person elected to Congress from Vermont, benefited in the closing weeks of her hotly contested primary campaign from a million-dollar advertising blitz carried out by LGBTQ Victory Fund, a hybrid political action committee and super PAC. Singh bankrolled the spending, although the timing of his donation allowed his involvement to remain undisclosed until after the primary.”
https://vtdigger.org/2023/02/28/becca-balints-1-million-crypto-benefactor-pleads-guilty-to-campaign-finance-fraud/
I remember not long ago Meg Hanson and John Klar ran for VP & Gov. That was one hell of a missed opportunity for VT.
Great comments on this topic 👍🏻
There are real criminals currently in office who are not convicted felons.
The VT GOP party’s ruling in my opinion is a form of prejudice, especially from a bogus conviction.
I ran in 2022 for state representative here in Montpelier under the Republican Party without the consent of the party or Mr. Dame. I’m a “convicted felon” also due to a very tainted justice system and a federal department that’s quite out of control, basically for a crime I did not commit and from a related substance that is now legal in Vermont and in most states,.
Good leaders have the opportunity to serve our nation in many ways. It is a service the requires commitment, sacrifice and dedication.
Trump is the candidate regardless of the party rules or selfish opinions, we basically have 2 choices, it’s your choice. Voting for the independent candidate at this point is quite useless considering the latest poll results.
