Cops take down barricaded assault suspect with non-lethal munitions

A Brownington man is facing multiple felony charges after an hours-long standoff with Vermont State Police that spanned two days and involved threats, barricades, and an alleged assault on officers.

According to the Vermont State Police, troopers from the Derby Barracks were first called at about 10 p.m. March 16 to a residence in Lowell after receiving a report that 45-year-old Syman Belmore had threatened to kill an individual and destroy their home.

When troopers arrived, police say Belmore barricaded himself inside the residence, refused to come out, and continued making threats toward both the reporting party and law enforcement.

The situation extended into the next day, when Belmore was later located at a separate residence in Brownington. Police said attempts to negotiate with him again failed. By about 6:45 p.m. March 17, troopers moved in to make an arrest but found the driveway had been blocked off.

Authorities said Belmore continued to defy commands and escalated the confrontation by throwing objects at troopers, including a liquefied petroleum gas cylinder. Police allege he then armed himself with a blunt metal object and advanced toward officers.

Troopers deployed less-lethal munitions, and after a brief struggle, Belmore was taken into custody without further incident.

He was transported to the Derby Barracks for processing and later lodged at Northern State Correctional Facility without bail. Belmore is scheduled to appear in Orleans criminal court at 12:30 p.m. on March 18.

He faces charges including criminal threatening, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, and being a habitual offender. Authorities did not release the name of the victim.

In an as-yet unrelated incident, state police are investigating a suspicious death in Brownington.

The investigation began at about 2 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, when police received a report of a deceased man at a property on Willoughby Lake Road. First responders located a man dead inside the residence.

Initial investigation indicates this incident arose from a dispute involving individuals who knew each other.
