A veteran police officer and Vermont Criminal Justice Council member has resigned from the council and from his two police jobs following a Zoom meeting ‘hot mic’ moment.
During Wednesday’s Vermont Criminal Justice Council meeting, called to discuss possible changes in the state’s Fair and Impartial Policing policy, an invited member of Migrant Justice – the advocacy group for illegal immigrants – was speaking when a ‘zoom bomb’ voice was heard via cellphone to say, “you’re here f—–g illegally.”
The chastened speaker later identified himself as Michael Major, the Vermont Police Association representative to the council. He was apparently ‘speaking to the screen,’ unaware his comments could be heard. His explanation that he was talking to his daughter was not accepted as either true or excusable by other members, who called for his resignation.
After lengthy discussion, Major – apologizing profusely, and no longer claiming he was talking to his daughter – submitted his resignation to the council. He submitted his resignation to the Bristol Police Department, where he was listed as a part-time officer, on Wednesday. A day later, Sheriff Dan Gamelin issued a statement saying he had accepted Major’s resignation as a deputy sheriff. (Major unsuccessfully ran for the sheriff position in 2018.)
It is not known whether his resignations from his police officer jobs were solicited.
VCJC spokesperson said Major’s conduct doesn’t fall under conduct liable for police officer decertification – one of the council’s most prominent duties.

The Vermont Criminal Justice Council issued the following statement Wednesday afternoon.
“Earlier today, during the general discussion portion of the Vermont Criminal Justice Council’s regularly scheduled public meeting, a Council member, Mike Major, made an offensive statement that was insulting to our invited guests from Migrant Justice, to our other Council members, and to the organizations and communities that our Council members represent.
“Mr. Major’s remark occurred during a series of statements from community stakeholders who were expressing their frustration with the Council due to the Council removing the Fair and Impartial Policing Policy from the meeting’s agenda. While Mr. Major stated that he had not intended for his comments to be heard by the Council or the public, the impact of his words was devastating. Members of the Council, including the Council’s Chair, William Sorrell, swiftly condemned Mr. Major’s words expressing that his comments not only detract from the hard work by Vermont Law Enforcement to understand and address concerns of marginalized groups, but that his divisive remark exemplifies the fears felt by marginalized populations too often in our State.
“The Council wishes to reiterate that Mr. Major’s words are not representative of the Council nor of law enforcement in the State of Vermont. Chair Sorrell wishes to further state, “Today’s appalling incident underscores the need for our Council and others to redouble efforts to eliminate discriminatory attitudes and actions by some Vermont law enforcement personnel in the performance of their duties.” The Council accepted Mr. Major’s resignation from his seat on the Council which he tendered during the meeting. Mr. Major had been serving as the representative of the Vermont Police Association.
“The Fair and Impartial Policy has been diligently worked on by the Council’s Fair and Impartial Policing subcommittee. The subcommittee submitted its proposed policy revisions to the Council in December of 2023. After the policy was discussed at the last two Council meetings, the policy was listed on the agenda today for a potential vote. The removal from today’s agenda was requested by the Chair of The Council, William Sorrell, so that the subcommittee could review and address the concerns raised by the Vermont Association of Chiefs of Police prior to the Council moving forward with further discussion on the policy. The Fair and Impartial Policing Policy is significant to the rights of all people in Vermont. Chair Sorrell requested the removal of the policy from the agenda with deep regret but with the understanding that this additional delay would ensure that all stakeholders’ points of view were heard and factored into the subcommittee’s proposed policy and the Council’s subsequent review of the policy.”
According to its website: The mission of the Vermont Criminal Justice Council is to establish rules, policies, regulations and standards for certification and training of criminal justice personnel and to serve as a resource to municipalities, counties, and the state to improve the quality of citizen protection. We will accomplish our mission by developing a comprehensive program to provide high quality criminal justice training in a cooperative, efficient and effective manner through proper utilization of modern technology and coordination of our facility. We provide an aggressive in-service training calendar designed to meet this goal.

“you’re here f—–g illegally.” It’s probably true. Socialists (communists) progressives hate truth. We are talking about a group that supported (Democrats) cheered on and bailed out rioters (BLM, ANTIFA) burning down cities “Fiery but Mostly Peaceful” for 8 months before they were outraged by Jan 6th?
Was he wrong?
No. But in aspiring to the highest level of evil, leftist reality relies on operating as if truth is nonexistent.
When it comes to Lefties, we know you can’t say anything naughty in front of Lucifer himself b/c he’ll complain to God that you don’t love your enemy. Please stop being naive about these demons. “You’re here illegally!” Forget the swear word. Everybody has heard that word.
There’s discussion taking place on zoom. That fact can’t be brought up?! Give the migrant justice fellow a chance to respond and move on.
As some have alluded already, what was so offensive? The expletive or the word “illegally”? Because that is a statement of fact.
And that they these folks, illegal immigrants, despite whatever justification they may have for entering our country remain lawbreakers. They broke the law to enter this country. That fact alone invalidates every immigrant in history, who worked hard to enter this country and become and remain citizens.
And when our government then rewards these immigrants who arrived here illegally, by passing or treating them with lax laws, or financial and other awards, is a further slap in the face.
The fact that so many people are “outraged” by this statement should be far more troublesome to Vermont Citizens, then someone stating a fact. I personally find the use of the expletive to be deleterious to whatever point one might be attempting to make, but that’s me.
Some who are old enough to recall “the good old days” will remember that the “F-bomb” simply was not used in polite company. It would definitely not be used in speaking with a woman. It would have been unthinkable to utter it to one’s daughter.
Free speech issues aside, that is not the preferred style of communication for a law enforcement officer or other public official dealing with a sensitive situation.
What “sensitive” situation? The only situation here is that the USA is inundated by millions of unidentified illegal aliens who have broken federal law & invaded this sovereign nation. Many are on the dole, and many more are criminals, drug dealers, gangsta’s, & are carrying diseases once eradicated from the USA. They have ZERO “right” to step foot in this country, yet are being enabled & encouraged by a rogue lawless administration bent upon violating federal law & following the W.E.F. diabolical & detestable “global government” tenets as opposed to OUR US Constitution – which they have no authority or right to do.
IF ONLY every single police officer would simply use “impolite” language daily to vent their abject frustration in facing the results of the contemptable DNC’s acts which result daily in the deaths herein and the destruction of our entire country – as opposed to witnessing this deranged POTUS & its “democrat” party decimate the nation my family members FOUGHT & DIED for to PRESERVE while being hamstrung to do anything to correct it by the WARLORDS of the DNC – America would be great again!!!!!!!!!!

You miss the point entirely. A state or local law enforcement officer cannot simply look at someone’s skin and pretend to know what their immigration status is whether they are right or wrong. There’s arguably only 2 agencies with the ability to make that determination and even they cannot do it without biometrics.
What this officer flatly did (for all those who failed to see it) was go on a live mic in front of an audience and racially profile someone.
That’s besides the fact that most of these people being referred to as “illegal immigrants” (no such thing) in the comments here have used the asylum loophole to legally gain entry to the US while their cases take the (now well known) 10 years to wind through the immigration courts. These distinctions are important for Conservatives and other America-lovers to note because the far left and Dems easily use them to make people like Kathy sound like ignorant bigots- and when it’s down to two choices, “good people” can never vote for “them”.
The sooner the loudest bigoted voices like Kathy’s are quieter in the Conservative Party, the better for America.

Can you please explain for us how you arrived at the use of the term “racially profile someone” based on the words, “you’re here f—–g illegally.”
I don’t see it. I’ve read the article twice now. It isn’t clear to me how one could logically arrive at the conclusion that race profiling was apparent. I would appreciate your clear, logical and respectful reply.

To be fair, the individual in question wasn’t intending to communicate his thoughts to anyone other than himself, as best as I can gather.
Always good advice, “never say anything you wouldn’t want your mother to hear.”
And yet the vast majority of rational Americans very obviously believe that maintaining this sovereign nation and complying with federal laws that very specifically dictate immigration are vastly more important than your personal definition of “civility” and “respect”.
1.) Foreigners who are trespassing on American soil without legal right to do so are NOT respectful.
2.) Foreigners who not only willfully violate US law by entering, but who are involved in drug and/or human trafficking whilst doing so – or who further endanger public safety by arriving inoculated/ill are NOT engaging in “civil” conduct.
3.) Your ignoring my family’s past sacrifices of both life and limb to protect and preserve this sovereign nation against foreign invasion as per the US Constitution is neither “respectful” or “civil”.
4.) The W.E.F.’s global government initiatives are, as a matter of fact to all rational peoples, diabolical, contemptable, and detestable and therefore stating such fact is neither disrespectful nor uncivilized, but rather a realistic perspective of a small but deranged group of wealthy elitists attempting to forcefully control the entire to the detriment of all of humanity.
5.) Unlike what Saul Alinsky proposed in “Rules for Radicals”, your repeating simplistic phrases endlessly will NOT “convince” lucid peoples in VT that illegal immigration is anything less than criminal, dangerous & deadly.
ARREST & DEPORT THE ILLEGALS AS PER FEDERAL LAW! AND ARREST & REMOVE ALL COMMUNISTS AS PER FEDERAL LAW!
Imagine illegally going to some nice country, possibly as a violent criminal, a human trafficker, or carrying dangerous disease, lying about your asylum claim, and then demanding free stuff, the right to work under the table, and immunity from repercussions for most crime, and then getting the local law enforcement fired for objecting to it.
This story will spread like wildfire amoungst all those being bussed and flown across america…….that and free housing in hotels at $60k per year, what could possibly go wrong?

The VTGOP doesn’t connect with Vermont voters other than to say something’s wrong. Progressive do stupid things, but they win because their plan is at least a positive, hopeful one; insane and inneffective, but screaming loudly about the end being nigh tends to just make people learn to ignore your voice. There are only two voices that are commonly heard these days: extreme left and extreme right, so extreme that in practice they begin to resemble each other.
Mr. Major stated the truth about the Migrant Justice Rep who is an Illegal Alien. Hot mic or not, if you make the statement, stand behind it.

State Representative Mari Cordes called “tRUMP” supporters fascists and Nazis on FB a few years back – no less inflammatory than Major’s statement – but probably less true. Guess we’ll find out next week. Mud-slinging is a one way street in Vermont.
As a group, we Moderates and Conservatives need to stop being so defensive, stop caring about what is said of us. Why aren’t we talking to the Left using language they understand, getting them to organically realize the Truth about their movement’s failures? Why are we not engaging in calm, measured Conservative evangelism, rather than striking out at the obviously-deceived Left? When we come off as vengeful, we tell them they can hurt us; when we are defensive, it signals we are losing.
While I absolutely agree with your intent, and your premises “Vermontensis”, sadly, you are expecting the Left to respond as calm and rational as we would…. and that will never, ever happen. It’s two entirely different mindsets. Jordan Peterson explains this very well on a variety of different channels. Flip the narrative, why can’t we just understand how important all their social justice issues are and just get along with them?

For the past week I have been seeing televised, job ads for VSP. Ads are appearing on Jordon Peterson’s pod casts via Roku’s You Tube channel.
I thought that an effective means to connect with rational thinkers. However, with an incident like this, no rational thinker would give Vermont LE a second thought. Let the progressives fend for themselves when MS-13 gangs shoot it out.

The Vermont Criminal Justice Council aiding and abetting criminals guilty of illegal entry into the United States of America, which is a crime according to Federal law as written. They must cease and destist their conspiring against the citizens of Vermont, be charged for criminal conspiracy and disbanded immediately. Any law officer sitting on the board has a duty to carry out and apply the law – if they do not, they must be arrested and charged as well. Dereliction of duty and violations of federal law.
Migrant Justice poster boy Enrique Balcazar was encountered illegally crossing the border THREE times. The first time he told BP he had a wife and kids IN MEXICO, not the current Migrant Justice/VT Digger narrative that he is married to a US citizen with US citizen kids he has to remain here for. By the third time, like many others, he learned how to game the ASYLUM system to effect his release into the US INTERIOR (where he has since been arrested for DUIS TWICE). Luckily for you, Vermont judges are compromised and drop your charges realizing the consequences. White DUI offenders don’t get the same “privilege”. What about your family in MEXICO Enrique? Don’t they need you?

There’s no such thing as an “illegal immigrant” Kathy. An “immigrant” by definition is someone who has utilized our system to come here legally. Anyone who is present here without the issuance of either a valid “non-immigrant” or “immigrant” visa or without express temporary permission (parole), or without being admitted by an immigration officer is an ILLEGAL ALIEN. That is the only proper title in that situation.
In the case of this man, he has prob claimed asylum and therefore is technically here legally as a parolee. Whether or not asylum law should be reconsidered is the real issue. Bigoted (yes that’s what I said) people like you who automatically label someone as an “illegal immigrant” based on what they look like only holds us back from getting to the real discussion.

The USA, “John” possesses legal means to request asylum and asylum claims are to be approved for a very limited, restrictive number of reasons and being “poor” is not and never has been one of them. Why not attempt a read on what causes can be potentially accepted. The legal, proper, & lawful process as laid out, yet again, by federal law is often long, arduous, and numerous factors are considered for EVENTUAL approval for citizenry. Your man in question amongst the millions of other lawless, often drug-dealing, criminals is almost certainly NOT eligible to be here nor to be granted citizenship under our current rule of law. He is therefore, as are ALL his invading brethren – an ILLEGAL ALIEN!

Here is but a snippet of the process:
Asylum is a claim migrants can file IF they have been FORCIBLY displaced or are fleeing harm or imminent death from of persecution in/at the hands of their country of origin.
Persecution MUST be related to one of only five grounds: race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or social group.
Grounds for migrants to be rejected for asylum claims by the USA are numerous and include:
gang affiliation, criminal record, prior deportation, being poor or having limited means, wanting a job, wanting to partake of US social services, being a foreign agent or terrorist, possessing illegal drugs, human trafficking, etc. etc. etc.
The process is long, complicated, and approval is not guaranteed & multiple federal agencies are historically involved.
For those NOT participating in these processes as per Federal Law:
The officer was correct – You’re here illegally. You are thereby an ILLEGAL ALIEN.
And from I’ve heard on the radio…It’s not fun being an illegal alien.
