Burlington Police say they are investigating an aggravated assault with a rifle butt during a major disturbance near City Hall Park early Sunday.
One shot was fired, but nobody was injured, according to police.
Burlington Police said it received a report of a shooting near St. Paul Street and College Street about 1:54 a.m.
Responding officers found a victim, whose name was not released, with a head injury.
Burlington Rescue transported the victim to the UVM Medical Center for further treatment and was eventually released, police said.
The investigation determined a large disturbance broke out on College Street near City Hall Park before an individual removed what appeared to be a rifle from his pants, Detective Lt. Mike Beliveau said.
The armed individual struck the victim in the head with the rifle and then fired a single round into the air, Beliveau said.
It was determined the injury to the victim was caused by the blunt force impact from the rifle and not the gunshot, police said.
Other involved people involved in the incident subsequently fled from police on foot, according to Beliveau, commander of the detective division.
One vehicle fled from Chittenden County law enforcement at high rates of speed, but the pursuit was eventually discontinued due to safety concerns, Beliveau said.
Ballistic evidence was collected from the scene by investigators and more evidence was being sought as detectives combed the area.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Detective Zach Beal at zbeal@bpdvt.org or (802) 540-2364.

The Progressive policies in Burlington just show how much they are out of touch with reality. This is great for tourism.
I won’t go there at all now
Burlington’s City Hall Park is a pathetic mess even on a sunny summer afternoon, thanks to the fine leadership coming out of it’s namesake building, right next door. It would the best location to site the proposed supervised injection facility, since it largely already functions in that capacity, just without the medical professionals.
A rifle, in his pants ………..?
That’s probably what they call the male tool these days , lol.
Off to the funny farm for him. Get hi off the streets forever.
Is that a rifle in your pants or you happy to see me😆
Qoute the great Mae West .
Darn those normally law-abiding 2nd Amendment adherents and their penchant for carrying rifles down their pants.
Obviously, the mayor & council need to now consider banning the public from wearing pants.
THAT ought to finally ensure public safety.
You’re not too far off Kathleen, I do commercial window cleaning twice a month in downtown Burlington. Last summer at lunchtime I saw a guy pushing a shopping cart full of belongings (including clothes) wearing pink flip flops and that was ALL HE WAS WEARING! This was right on the Church St. Marketplace…women, children and other men who had no desire to see it. Nothing was done about, I did know that he wasn’t packing…not much of a consolation though!
Lol, Jonathan…..wearing clothes in most towns in VT is optional, not required, after all. That hippie culture & “live & let live” ideology became very firmly entrenched PRIOR to the new Vermont of gangsta’s & drugs taking over that trend.
But now pants can no longer be just optional, they must be prohibited. After all, the mayor & counselors running Burlington into the ground will NEVER admit it’s the homeless, the mentally ill, & the druggies who are the problem in VT, and NOT the 2nd Amendment proponents.
Just another day in the neighborhood . . . one that my family and I no longer even consider visiting. Life is still better in the NEK . . . aside from StJ.
