Christmas Day knife fight leaves Newport man dead

Police have identified the man who died in a Christmas Day altercation in Newport Town.

An autopsy was performed Wednesday, Dec. 27. The deceased man is identified as 58-year-old Donald Coull, a resident of the home at 107 Lawson Rd. where this incident occurred.

The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death was a stab wound of the chest. A ruling on the manner of death is pending further investigation and toxicology testing, which can take from several weeks to several months.

The injured man is identified as Trevor Stone, 39, a resident of a camper on the property. He was treated at North Country Hospital for a laceration/stab wound and subsequently released.

The Vermont State Police investigation into this incident remains active and ongoing. VSP will continue to provide updates as the case proceeds. No further details are available at this time.

Tunbridge shooting victim identified – State Police have identified the man who was shot in Tunbridge Dec. 20 as Hugh Shackleton, 33, of Woodstock. He suffered multiple injuries to his lower extremities and remains hospitalized at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. He is expected to survive.

The man who fired a rifle during this encounter is identified as Justin Duddie, 21, of Tunbridge.

State police detectives continue to investigate all facts and circumstances surrounding this incident. No one is currently in custody. Following completion of the VSP investigation, the case will be turned over to the Orange County State’s Attorney’s Office for review and a determination on charges.
