DCF: No detention center in Newbury – The Vermont Department of Children and Families has made it official. Despite prevailing in a court of law, the state has changed its plans for a former bed and breakfast at the end of Stevens Place.

“I want you to be among the first to know that the state will not pursue a secure juvenile treatment facility for justice involved youth in Newbury,” wrote DCF Commissioner Chris Winters in a letter to state Rep. Joe Parsons, R-Newbury.

The letter, dated March 11, has been posted to the town’s website.

The state is not abandoning the site, owned by Vermont Permanency Initiative, altogether. In the letter, Winters indicates they are exploring a program providing a “home-like setting” for children with developmental needs. The children would not be involved with the state’s criminal justice system. – Journal-Opinion

The event will take place on 4 PM Sunday, April 7 at 57 South Williams Street in Burlington. This new lecture series will address the politics of contemporary education and the recent rise in antisemitism in our schools and communities, where this ideology comes from and how we can confront it.

Medium/high risk sex offender to be released today – Kerry Schunk, a medium/high risk sex offender, will be released Friday, March 15 from Northwest State Correctional Facility and will be supervised by Burlington Probation & Parole.

Schunk was convicted in a 2019 aggravated sexual assault of an 18-year-old female. He was already a convicted sex offender stemming from a 2003 conviction of sexual assault when he engaged in a sexual relationship with a 12-year-old female when he was 18 years old. He plans to live in a South Burlington hotel. VT DOC says that compared to other incarcerated offenders, his risk of sexual recidivism is Moderate/High. Based on his sexual interests and offending history, if he were to sexually re-offend, his victim(s) would likely be adult females that are known to him.

  1. When it comes to the sex offender being let loose after 5 years of prison for conviction of sexual assault, it’s a terrible policy from the juries and prosecutors. Vermonters should take matters into their own hands and use constitutional carry and carry a gun to protect from sex offenders and stop them in their tracks.

  2. I’m sorry but the MVCS can’t find a place actually in Vermont for their fundraiser
    What’s the reasoning for that?
