The Burlington Police Department faced an exceptionally challenging night Sunday on into today, with a series of major incidents stretching the department’s resources to their limits. At one point, the number of individuals in custody matched the number of officers on duty, highlighting the immense strain on the force.
According to official reports, no officers were available for service after 11:00 pm until approximately 5:20 am due to the response to these critical incidents. The department currently has 26 officers available for patrol, spread across three shifts: days, evenings, and midnights. Typically, the day and evening shifts have three to five patrol officers assigned for the entire city, while the midnight shift has two to three officers.
On the night in question, the evening shift had three officers with one supervisor, and the midnight shift had two officers with one supervisor. As the evening shift typically ends at 2:45 am, two of the three evening officers were held over on overtime to assist with calls until approximately 6:00 am, while the third officer remained on duty until around 7:00 am. Additionally, one officer from the day shift started early to help manage the call volume.
The incidents that unfolded throughout the night were numerous and varied, ranging from arson and suspicious events to trespassing, domestic disturbances, and custodial interference cases.
In one particularly harrowing incident, officers responded to a report of a domestic assault on South Willard Street. Upon arrival, they encountered Nicolelus Sanborn, 30, of Burlington, who answered the door with a firearm in hand. After a tense standoff, during which Sanborn threatened officers with a large stick and attempted to strike one of them, he was eventually taken into custody without bail.
Another incident involved Aaron Tudhope, 46, of Fairfax, who was arrested and cited for custodial interference after failing to return his child to the child’s mother, who has sole custody.
The night also saw arrests for aggravated domestic assault and misdemeanor domestic assault, with Regal Spencer, 28, of Williston, and Maria Chaparro-Hammond, 24, of Burlington, being processed and released on citations to appear in court.
As the investigations into these incidents continue, the Burlington Police Department is faced with the daunting task of ensuring public safety while operating with limited resources. The events of this chaotic night serve as a stark reminder of the challenges law enforcement officers face on a daily basis and the need for adequate staffing and support to effectively serve the community.

“A flurry of mayhem”…I know the former mayor used to boast about Burlington being a “vibrant” city. The newly-elected mayor seems to have sent out a strong vibe that the lawlessness that beset Burlington in the post-George Floyd Era will continue unabated. You voted for this, Burlington, now you own it.
and the Communists in charge r loving every minute. This is precisely how u destroy a country and take over.
Interestingly, no mention of Burlington’s much ballyhooed social workers handling these calls. Mr. Lachapelle is correct- “You voted for this, Burlington- now you own it”
2 classes of people, without equal protection under the law:
“eventually taken into custody without bail.”
vs
“released on citations to appear in court.”
Special protections need to end. Everyone deserves equal protection under the law, just the same if they were a police officer.
If they increase the police budget, it will just be used as a weapon against the innocent people to collect their money or put them in government spy databases, while real criminals will continue to be “released on citations to appear in court.”, time after time.
I’m all for innocent until proven guilty, but the duty of the court would be to put the highest priority cases first, wile pushing back the lower offenses instead of taking forever.
0-tolerence for illegal aliens and interstate criminals who are caught committing crimes due to flight risks.
Perhaps hire social workers but they may have to raise their voice or even use harsh language. Just as long as they use the appropriate pronoun/gender terminology.

Here is how Hartford CT is dealing with their crime, gang and drug problem. This is why the Founders gave us the 2nd Amendment.

Thomas Jefferson: “Laws that forbid the carrying of arms, disarms only those who are neither inclined, nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants. They serve rather to encourage rather than prevent homicides, for an unarmed man maybe attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.”
Armatissimie e liberissimi – Most armed and most free
They are doing it right. I have thought that if the common person was to not be afraid of the Bully ( Drug Gang) and make it harder to do the sale in private it might not be so wide spread. The firearms are just an equalizer. I was asked once why I carried a firearm. I just said I’m too old to fight and too fat to run
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
‘Diversity’ is a code word for intentional social destruction.
the queen city will become the little sister of new york city///// i will not allow my self to be put in this kind of danger/////
A city of over 40,000 and three to four (counting supervisors) police on duty, what could possibly go wrong??? Hey Burlington, sick of it yet? There is a fix, it’s called November elections: vote every single Marxist out of your city council, vote every Marxist out of the Chittenden House and Senate. Elect strong conservatives with a plan to act, if they don’t produce as promised vote them out too!
This situation wasn’t uncommon back in my days in LE. There were many occasions where we had more people in custody than we had working. Many of us worked over 24 hours at times.
Slash mayoral lunch programs, and hire more police.
