Thieves paint car black to disguise it, then crash in hit-and-run

Police are searching for the driver of a car stolen from Burlington and then painted black that was involved in a hit-and-run crash on Village Road in Corinth Sunday morning.

Vermont State Police located the car in a nearby driveway with a passenger inside, but the operator fled. The car was stolen out of Burlington and camouflaged in black paint. The passenger was identified as Zachary James, 33, of Burlington/Colchester. He was charged with Negligent Operation, Crashes; Duty to Stop; Aggravated Operation without Consent of Owner, and Possession of Stolen Property.

Anyone who can identify the operator or witnessed the crash is encouraged should contact VSP at 802-748-3111.

Fatal crash – Ernest Erno, 69, of Richford was pronounced dead at the scene of a one-car crash Sunday night on Rte. 105. Erno was the sole occupant in the vehicle at the time of the crash.   

Police say Erno was traveling east on Rte. 105 when, for reasons still under investigation, his vehicle left the south side of the road.  His vehicle traveled down an embankment and crashed into a ditch.  This resulted in heavy front-end damage.  Erno was not wearing a seatbelt.

Snowmobiler in critical condition – A 30-year-old Topsham man was airlifted to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center over the weekend after a snowmobile crash in Groton State Forest near Kettle Pond.

The crash happened on a VAST trail at approximately 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Travis Laraway was found in critical condition. He was transported by UTV to an awaiting ambulance and then to a nearby landing zone for the helicopter, according to a post on social media by the Danville Volunteer Fire Department.
