Burlington Police Chief: “Court inexplicably released” attempted murder suspect

Another judge then ordered suspect held without bail

Burlington Police Department Chief Jon Murad says he and his fellow Queen City cops are “bewildered” that attempted murder suspect Jaiden Green was released on conditions.

Vermont Superior Court Judge Megan Shafritz, a 2018 appointee by Gov. Phil Scott, released Green – prompting Murad’s public complaint. Judge Michael Harris then ordered Green held without bail.

The narrative

In all, there are three separate releases by the Burlington Police Department spanning Saturday (3/16) through Monday (3/18) concerning the alleged attempted murder and subsequent release of the suspect.

The initial press release stated, “On [Saturday] at approximately 2:18 AM, the Burlington Police Department responded to Main St between Church St/S Winooski Ave. for a report of gunfire. Officers arrived to the area and initiated a preliminary investigation, preserved the crime scene and began interviewing witnesses.”

It continues that shortly afterward a man arrived at the UVM Medical Center Emergency Department for gunshot wounds.

“This male was determined to be a victim of the shooting that occurred on Main St. The victim was treated at the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and discharged,” the report states.

The investigation may be complicated by the large number of people in the area at the time. The release continues, “An initial review of surveillance footage indicates that there were many people in the vicinity of the shooting.”

Later on Saturday, there was an update that they had found a suspect. It stated, “On 3/16/24 at approximately 7:00 PM, Jaiden Green, 19, of Burlington, was taken into custody by Burlington Police for the charge of 2nd Degree Attempted Murder.”

Green may have fired the shot that led to the police being called.

The release states, “Green is alleged to have discharged a firearm during an altercation in downtown Burlington at approximately 2:18 AM on 3/16/24, striking an individual who suffered a gunshot wound with non-life-threatening injuries. Green was ordered to be released on conditions by a Chittenden County Judge with a citation to appear in court on Monday 3/18/24 at 10:30 AM.”

Then there was a second update sent out the following Monday written by Chief Jon Murad. He does not sound pleased with the developments.

“But then the court inexplicably released Mr. Green on conditions,” he stated. “To state that again: he was released on conditions for an attempted murder. This is beyond bewildering, and beyond frustrating for the men and women of patrol who responded to a bar-closing shooting in the heart of our downtown, for the detectives who spent their weekend investigating and assembling a case for arraignment, and, most of all, for the victim who had a firearm pointed at his chest at close range and was shot in the arm.”

According to Murad, his staff was diligent in getting the crime investigated. And he did not point the finger at the State’s Attorney’s office, often regarded as the source of too-lenient criminal justice decisions.

“Detectives prepared an affidavit and reviewed it with the Chittenden County State’s Attorney’s Office, which has been and remains a hand-in-hand partner on gun violence. When the evidence was presented to the court, the court approved the arrest. Our City should be proud of the speed and diligence with which our detectives responded and resolved this stage of the case,” he wrote.

  1. Decent people of common sense are proud of the police and equally ashamed of the prosecutorial infrastructure in Chittenden County. Upon conviction for a felony, Chinscruff Jaiden should end up on the federal database of prohibited persons and if ever found in possession of a firearm again should earn a nice long stretch in federal prison. No more guns for you, chinscruff.

  2. Judge Megan Shafritz’s facebook page shows a photo of deceased Supreme Court Justice Ruth Ginsburg, is a political supporter of Bill Sorrell, who she worked for as well. She argued the Kingdom Con case to shelter State officials. It appears clear how she “earned” her appointment.

Burlington Freepress September 2017: “Shafritz argued that the attorneys suing the state should not be allowed to obtain sworn statements from people involved in the EB-5 program.”The Vermont Supreme Court has been very clear that immunity issues should be, must be resolved at the earliest opportunity, which in this case is the state’s motion to dismiss,” Shafritz said, “and that no discovery is permitted until that question is resolved.”

By the way, the EB-5 scam department known as Vermont Regional Center is still up and running today. All in spite of federal recommendation to disband it for “massive” fraud at Jay Peak. They are hanging on through lawfare warfare – our tax dollars at work – none of which is to our benefit, of course.

  3. please, could we have a complete story/// what is the victims name//// looks like gun control is not working/// judge appointed by govie scott/// go figure that one out///

  4. “he (Chief Murad) did not point the finger at the State’s Attorney’s office,” He did not have to point a finger. The stench was so obvious he only had to follow his nose.

    • The lapse could be with either Chittenden Cty. State’s Atty george or the judiciary, both will circle their wagons to protect each other. Chittenden County’s voters have
stated their preferences on crime, by re-electing george, whom was very clear about her disdain for bail and certain laws that are not to her personal liking. Additionally, there are many chronic offenders- such as M. Reynolds (todays VDC article) that are not incarcerated despite hundreds, if not thousands of “police interactions”. Since the 2020 “summer of love” and liberal fascination with BLM, DEI and whatever the cause du jour is today, the criminal justice system has swung full left. As Burlington changes mayors, to return to the morass of progressive rule-
don’t look for the rule of law to be upheld. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Chief Murad be replaced by the socialists.

    I just did.

  10. Meanwhile, Daniel Banyai, of Pawlet sits in a prison cell for a lack of 15,000 dollar bail on a charge of not removing unpermitted farm animal shelters.

  11. I was arrested for attempted murder. I was bailed out of jail. Eventually, the charge was reduced and I was coerced into pleading guilty to violating a noise ordinance. Yes, really. Not in VT.
