A Burlington man has been cited to appear in court after an early-morning attempt to strike a police officer in the head with a meat cleaver – and then knife him in the stomach.
Both attempts were unsuccessful. BPD today provided the following information today, January 14:
At 5:35 this morning, an off-duty sergeant with the Burlington Police Department arrived for work at One North Avenue. The sergeant was in plain clothes, as he had not started working yet, when he entered the Uniform Services Bureau lobby of the BPD.
When the sergeant entered the lobby, he observed a male standing in the lobby and recognized that male from prior police interactions. The male was identified as Eric Jones, 34, of Burlington. Without comment, and with a demeanor described by the sergeant as “affectless”, Jones held up a meat cleaver and pointed it towards the sergeant and raised it over his head. A struggle ensued, and the sergeant was able to remove the meat cleaver from Jones’s hand.
As the struggle continued, however, Jones removed a second weapon, a kitchen knife, from his coat pocket and directed it towards the officer in an attempt to stab the officer in the stomach. The sergeant was able to wrest the second knife from Jones, as well. He threw both weapons outside the lobby, into the parking lot, as he continued to struggle with Jones. Ultimately, he was able to separate from Jones, leave the lobby with Jones trapped inside, and call for assistance. Uniformed, on-duty BPD officers arrived on scene and took Jones into custody.
A check of Jones’s criminal history shows the following: 2 misdemeanor charges, 1 assaultive charge, and 1 assault on officer charge. Jones was flash cited to appear in court for aggravated assault.
The off-duty sergeant was physically unharmed. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Burlington Police Department at (802) 658-2704.

Is Burlington’s DEI Mayor Ok with the data, I hope it was cleared by her office !!
This is just another POS roaming the streets in the cesspool known as Burlington,
The mayor would like this hidden from the public as she states the ” City ” is safe, yes this surely shows it is…………………….. yeah !!
A photo of the perp would be nice just in case he gets released again.
“Jones was flash cited to appear in court for aggravated assault.” Why does this sound like he was released? He’s lucky to be alive, the officer would have been well within his rights to terminate this guy.
…inside the “21 foot rule”, an officer is well within his rights to use lethal force against an assailant advancing on him with an edged weapon…that is in the real world, but not in the utopian People’s Republic of Burlington. Any private citizen in the same situation would be justified to drop that attacker like a bag of dirt.
Hmm. The actions of the Sergeant when faced with imminent harm or death appear to show the high caliber of the BPD officers, their training and reflect upon the leadership in the department in spite of the political maelstrom in Burlington. That the accused is even alive to receive a “flash citation” counters all arguments about “improper” policing in Burlington and absolutely casts a raw spotlight on the state judicial system, sarah soros-george’s and mulvaney-hyphen’s repugnant disregard for both law enforcement and the public.
The officer sounds like a total stud who deserves a raise, a promotion, paid time off and a bottle of Whistle Pig. I’ll chip in on the Whistle Pig.
Actions Must Have Consequences !!
The very fact that Jones was released for this insane attack is all the more reason we need new legislation now which provides for being held without bail, or extremely high bail, in cases like this.
For example:
“The new statute shall provide that whenever an individual violently threatens and/or assaults a law enforcement officer, fireman, EMT, paramedic, or first responder, he or she shall not be released on conditions, but shall be held either without bail or bail of $20-50K until his or her case is adjudicated by trial or entering a guilty plea in court and is sentenced.”
If we can do this for those charged with murder and capital offenses, let’s create legislation to expand this for those who assault our LEO’s. This is in our power to do; we only need the will to do it this legislative session.
Any legislators who oppose this might consider inviting Mr. Jones to be their houseguest this evening, seeing that he was quite adamant about seeking shelter in state custody this evening. How frustrating it must have been for Mr. Jones not to have been permitted lodging after such a bold attempt at check-in.
Great! Now everyone will have to pass a background check just to buy a meat cleaver!
…and wait 72 hours before taking possession of said cleaver…
He was cited to be in court? He should be dead!
Attacking a person in the police lobby with a meat cleaver is a good way to commit suicide. JUST ANOTHER DAY AT THE VERMONT ZOO.
That sounds like it was his intention. Too bad when some people decide to off themselves, they do it in a way that messes things up for someone else. Sometimes people commit crimes to end up in jail for a warm place to spend the winter, but just smashing some windows or stealing a car wont get you jail time in Sarah George’s jurisdiction, so cleaver man thought he had to do something more serious. In any case, the officer should be publicly recognized for the restraint he used. As suggested below, this would be a good opportunity for the Governor to come forward to do so, and also for him to bring attention to the zoo that Burlington has deteriorated into.
This would be a great time for our governor to recognize the excellence of this officer!
Well, interesting comments. This officer should get an award. Perhaps this was amsuicide attempt, if not brazenly stupid, it would seem he was stalking and intended to do the officer harm.
This would be a great time for the governor to award our men in blue with some kind of recognition..
Did anyone think to call Mayor Staphneck first to run the situation by her to get permission to defend oneself against meat cleaver and knife attacks? The citizens police overseer committee is contemplating putting this on their next monthly agenda for discussion.
Anywhere else except California or VT or MA – this type of attack is referred to as: ATTEMPTED MURDER.
This lunatic who is obviously far too dangerous & violent to be in public ought to be locked up and hogtied in similar fashion to Hannibal Lector and then placed in Sarah George’s personal office where she can choose to lavish him with tea & crumpets, praise his laudable actions all day long, and forward some lovely pics of his deviant face to her friend George Soros as they confer as to how this proven psychopath could best serve the State of Vermont in some carefully considered public service capacity via her appointment.
And if anyone thinks this was anything more than George just giving a giant Bronx cheer to the entire electorate for them having the cojones to elect GOP representatives in the midst of the DNC’s continuous pursuit in intentionally destroying and then Communizing this state —- THINK AGAIN.
I’d give you the same, George – you pathetic desecrator of all things godly and good, but I somehow couldn’t locate any icon from The Bronx in my folder.
Why was there no other officer at the BPD present when this occurred? How did this guy get into much less lurk in the lobby -carrying a kitchen knife and a meat cleaver? What is going on at the BPD?
The sergeant should be commended for his self-defense skill and his restraint. Why the assailant is still alive does strike me as a bit odd, but there is probably a reason not apparent from the report.
