Burlington police arrested a 28-year-old Burlington man Saturday after responding to a reported domestic assault and concerns involving a firearm at a Buell Street residence.
Police were called to the area at about 11:39 a.m. on Dec. 20 after a family member reported their daughter may have been assaulted by her partner and was possibly unable to leave the residence. The caller also reported that the partner was threatening to harm himself with a firearm in front of her.
According to police, the caller lost contact with their daughter shortly before officers arrived. Responding officers established a perimeter around the residence, temporarily closing nearby roadways and sidewalks due to the report of a firearm. Vermont State Police and University of Vermont Police assisted Burlington officers in securing the area.
After the scene was secured, the caller—who was on scene—was able to reestablish contact with their daughter via text message. The woman was then able to safely exit the residence and speak with officers.
Based on statements provided during the investigation, police determined that a domestic assault had occurred and that the suspect, identified as Khalil Young, 28, was still inside the residence alone. Officers also confirmed that a firearm was present inside the home but had not been used to threaten the caller or members of the public.
Police made contact with Young, who agreed to exit the residence peacefully. He was taken into custody without incident.
Young was arrested on a charge of aggravated domestic assault. He was processed and released on conditions by order of a judge and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 22, according to police.
