Burlington goes dark: Latest police news release lacking basic info

By Michael Donoghue, Vermont News First

What appears to be the first press release rolled out by the Burlington Police after the Gag Order was issued this week by Progressive Party Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak is lacking basic facts.

It is unclear why the press release is missing the standard information for a somewhat routine case. Is it due to poor drafting by BPD’s Public Information Officer? Or was the news release slashed by the red editing pen wielded by the Mayor?

After Mulvaney-Stanak issued the controversial Gag Order, Vermont News First had put the Mayor’s Office on notice that all future press releases destined for VNF also needed to include the original draft sent over to her office by police for review. It was the best way to see if the Mayor was impacting transparency.

The VNF request was made under the Vermont Public Records Law, but it looks like the Mayor is ignoring the records request and /or the Vermont law. No copy of the draft was shared by the Mayor.

The new press release notes Anna Siegel, 23, of Winooski is facing a charge of driving while under the influence after crashing her “vehicle” into a Burlington Police cruiser about 7:10 p.m. Jan. 8.

Siegel failed to stop for a Burlington Police officer near Colchester Avenue and East Avenue and ran a red light according to PIO Sarah Hernandez Timm. Siegel then crashed into the police cruiser, Hernandez Timm wrote.

Other responding officers helped determine Siegel was under the influence, Hernandez Timm wrote.

The press release fails to indicate if the impairment was due to drugs or alcohol. It also never says whether Siegel took a breath test, or refused, which is her right.

The release also fails to say when Siegel is due in Superior Court to face the charge — if State’s Attorney Sarah George decides to honor the citation issued by police.

The Hernandez Timm/Mulvaney-Stanak news release is missing other routine information for a crash, including:

— Fails to mention the full name of the Burlington Police officer involved in a public accident, the age and hometown (all public record);

— Fails to say if the officer was injured in the line of duty, including whether he or she was taken to the hospital to be checked for on-duty injuries; whether he/she will be out of work for the short-staffed department.

— Fails to say how much damage to the taxpayer-owned cruiser and the year, make and model of the police vehicle;

— Fails to say kind of “vehicle” Siegel was driving, including year, make, model and amount of damage;

— Fails to mention in the news release if there were any passengers in either vehicle or not; Were any injured?

Also baffling is the statement in the news release that Siegel was “transported to the South Burlington Police Department for processing.”

Why did that happen? What’s wrong with going to the Burlington Police Station?

Why SBPD? The Burlington Police probably drove right past UVM Police Station and certainly the Winooski Police Station also is closer (just down the hill).

Burlington Police also has a substation at the airport. The Chittenden County Sheriff’s Department in South Burlington also is probably closer. SBPD is located close to the Williston town line.

Chief Jon Murad remains muzzled.

Murad has told some media outlets this week that he believes he can’t speak to reporters due to spirit of the Gag Order issued by Mulvaney-Stanak. He is listed on the written release as approving the draft by Hernandez Timm.

Hernandez Timm can’t be found after hours. The city limits her contact with the media. She may be the only Public Information Officer in Vermont that does not have a cellphone so she can be reached after hours — which is when most PIO’s are needed the most.

And Mulvaney-Stanak has said she doesn’t want media calls on her cellphone.

So it looks like the news will only be news on weekdays 8 to 4:30 p.m. when the Mayor’s Office is open for editing and comment.

  1. She’s studying the book Rules for Radicals to get her next move. She’ll be back soon, the usual strategy is to name someone publicly with no trial or chance to voice their side, with full press and call for their employment termination.

We’ll see how closely she follows the script.

  2. The other tactic for psychopaths/sociopaths is to avoid topic A, which is the one in question and come out with a laundry list of topics from b-z why what she did is in our best interest. If she’s very schooled in this art form, then she’ll be very, very comfortable with this, many politicians are very comfortable with this.

    Below is a classic example.

  3. Perhaps the Mayor should consider Mike’s 40+ years of excellent reporting and his background of investigating details when you piss him off. My motto was ” don’t get into an argument with someone that buys printing ink by the barrel. Might not be exact given modern day reporting but I’m sure you get the drift.

    • Should Mr. Donoghue decide to investigate this, large quantities of popcorn will be essential, watching the progressives stumble and stutter their way around the truth.

  4. What would one expect from the newly elected DEI Mayor’s directive to the police department? Hide the truth about what’s going on in this cesspool; what the people don’t know won’t hurt them, Burlington has fools in charge!!

Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak, is either in over her head or is only listening to her leftist entourage, which is more inept than the mayor.

The city is infested with crime, drugs, and homelessness so the mayor wants to paint a pretty picture, she thinks you’re naive, and you’ll swallow what she states as whole and honest, nothing could be farther from the truth.

    Wake up people

  5. Maybe there needs to be an uncontrollable forest fire in South Burlington.
Lots of lesbians doing absolutely not a dang thing and getting paid for it, plus getting free meals, too. And then not wanting to answer questions. Here’s a “copy and paste” statement, instead… with no substance.
But, boy oh boy, do they go on endlessly TL;DR style when they want to dykesplain a bunch of nonsense they don’t like about their fantasy of patriarchy. If you asked me, I’d say they are jealous of people born with a penis.
    Freud termed it penis-envy.
And to this day, white society genuflects to Freud and post-modern psychobabble…
with the exception of the penis-envy theory.
LOL. How convenient, but how obvious…

  6. IF THIS IS INDEED HER, THEN NO WONDER IT WAS EDITED BY THE MAYOR…

    • If you are right I would not be surprised if Sarah George refuses to prosecute her.

  7. I thought she was going to open a kiosk on Church Street to stop crime? Maybe she’s waiting for its completion to come out with the press release and new kiosk at the same time. Surely crime will plummet after it’s installation and Vermont will be another first, wiping out crime via one kiosk at a time. We’ll be crime free in no time!

  8. Mayor Mulvaney-Stanak, I have 1 question for you, What are you afraid of?
Clearly you are threatened by anyone who is more respected than you, or doesn’t buy into your political nonsense that is perpetuating the drug and crime related incidents. The current state of Burlington has already driven many businesses and patrons away myself included. And it’s not just that there are drug users or crime happening. It’s the lack of response from the city and your office that is concerning.
The fact that you feel the need to put a gag order on the chief of police who is doing everything you can to read the city of this nonsense with both hands tied behind his back pretty much shows your true colors,.

  9. Self-absorbed Stanek and her wooden puppets would do well to heed the words of John Adams regarding the true PURPOSE OF GOVERNMENT:

“Government is instituted for the common good; for the protection, safety, prosperity, and happiness of the people; and not for profit, honor, or private interest of any one man, family, or class of men; therefore, the people alone have an incontestable, unalienable, and indefeasible right to institute government; and to reform, alter, or totally change the same, when their protection, safety, prosperity, and happiness require it.” – John Adams

  10. Do we really need a better demonstration of the left’s war on free expression than mayor Emma-Hyphen’s tactics?

  11. I say that the BPD should just keep doing what they’ve been doing and to H@!! with the looney mayor! What’s she gonna do fire them all???!!!

  12. Personally, I could not care less about what happens in Burlington or with their group of alphabet soup leftists. We no longer patronize any businesses in Burlington or the left coast of Vermont. We are content to support our conservative reps and senators from the NEK, support our NEK businesses and farms, and let Chittenden county reap what it sows.

However, a HUGE thanks to Guy and his team for continuing on in shining a light on the darkness . . . my subscription is worth every penny, and then some.

  13. Boycott Burlington! They have enough of their own kind to function. The rest of us can refuse to visit and keep tourist from visiting citing safety concerns.

    • And make sure you spread the word to anyone who asks to avoid Burlington. I can’t believe the number of people I know who ask “what the hell happened to Burlington?”. Starve the beast.

  14. The tide is turning indeed. The DEI brigrade is now having to shift from full on offense to grid iron defense. Ghosting and silent retreat into their deep safe spaces? Is this what “elected” leadership looks and acts like? Time to pull up the Pull-Ups, set down the teddy bear, fix the make-up, “lean-in”, resolve the conflicts, or pack up your tissue boxes and Saul Alinsky books on tape and hit the road.

ICYMI: Two of the three mansions purchased by BLM co-founder, Patrice Cullurs burned in LA last week. The hinges of Hell are lapping their ankles – judgement day is coming. Hallelujah!

  15. How did Burlington let itself become such an embarrassment? Voters who apparently have no investment in their own community well being have voted-in a gang of silly folk chasing their own agendas.

  16. I am certain that Burlington officers could find actual law enforcement positions with sane local, state, or federal enforcement agencies. Now that the US has decided to enforce its existing laws, the feds will be searching for CBP patrol, deportation, and border agents and officers.
