The University of Vermont announced today that it will host U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor on October 20.
UVM’s new president, Dr. Marlene Tromp, will hold a sit-down conversation with Justice Sotomayor at Ira Allen Chapel from 7 to 8 p.m. Invitations, sent Thursday afternoon, are for UVM students and staff only.

In recent weeks, Justice Sotomayor has visited other campuses as part of her ongoing tour promoting civic education and her children’s book, Just Shine! How to Be a Better You. In September, she participated in a fireside chat at Washington University in St. Louis, discussing lessons from her mother’s life and offering guidance for young people. She also visited the University of Miami and New York Law School last month.

UVM will host this left-of-center Supreme Court Justice and she will be welcomed warmly and respectfully. If the host was one of the not-so-lefty Justices, there would be howls of protest until the gig was cancelled. If it was for some reason not cancelled, the engagement would be blockaded by students and faculty holding threatening signs and shouting expletives. If the speaker was allowed on the stage, they would be shouted down. Such is the double standard that exists in the Portland Oregon of New England.
Promote her book, collect a hefty check, and deliver pablum to the masses.
