With the federal government officially reopened, Vermont officials announced Thursday that state-funded emergency SNAP (3SquaresVT) benefits will no longer be needed, as federal funding for the food assistance program will resume as normal.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, states will begin receiving federal SNAP funds within 24 hours. Vermont recipients will see their benefits reloaded to EBT cards on Friday, November 14, with mailed notices expected to arrive Monday, November 17.
“Now that the federal government is back open, these essential benefits can continue as usual. But our work isn’t done,” said House Speaker Jill Krowinski. “While we’re relieved that Vermonters will no longer face uncertainty with SNAP benefits, it’s deeply disappointing that Congress failed to extend federal health care subsidies set to expire at the end of the year.”
The state’s Emergency Board — composed of the governor and the chairs of the Legislature’s money committees — met earlier this month to approve a contingency plan that would have used state funds to maintain food and heating assistance during the shutdown.
“While we’re relieved that federal SNAP funding will flow again, we remain frustrated that Congress has failed to extend federal health care subsidies, which will hit Vermonters’ budgets hard if they expire at the end of the year,” House Appropriations Chair Robin Scheu (D-Middlebury) and Ways & Means Chair Emilie Kornheiser (D-Brattleboro),said in a joint statement. “We’ll continue working with the Administration to safeguard Vermonters from the ripple effects of federal decisions.”

The three VT Congress jerks voted NO to stop the filibusterer, thereby continued non funding SNAP. Now this statement by House Speaker Jill Krowinski.
“While we’re relieved that Vermonters will no longer face uncertainty with SNAP benefits, it’s deeply disappointing that Congress failed to extend federal health care subsidies set to expire at the end of the year.”
How does Krowinski feel about S-W-B now? Still kissing up to them? The back stabbing truth is out.
Small Weenie Bunch wanted to starve grandma and grandpa with their vote.
We’ve become a government ‘ of the politicians, by the politicians and for the politicians’.
Must keep everyone distracted from the Democrats failures, so they need to redact documents released in 2011 to change the narrative, while lining their pockets During the record-long government shutdown, most members of Congress continued to receive their salaries, earning approximately $20,000 each while millions of federal workers were furloughed or working without pay, the New York Post reports. This discrepancy has sparked widespread criticism and accusations of hypocrisy, as lawmakers seem insulated from the hardships felt across the nation.”
Ron, government employees basically received a one month paid vacation, in addition to their regular vacations and holidays. If employees of the government were suffering hardships, because they don’t have a month’s worth of salary in savings for emergencies (common economic sense calls for at least 3 months worth) it is do to their own poor planning.
Despite all the histrionics . . . the only suffering was self imposed. People didn’t die, go hungry, lose their homes, etc. Americans continue to live in comfort, at least for now. I wonder how many people took this shutdown as a chance to think, “what if it lasted a year, or longer, maybe we should prepare?” Sadly, I doubt few did as this was just another bump in the road.
It’s time for them to investigate and and everyone of these programs. Most of the people that are on it should not be on it. It’s time to reevaluate all of these programs and only give it to the people that actually need it. Illegals don’t deserve benefits. And most of the people that are on it I’ve never been reevaluated.
I don’t know about that. I’ve had to fill out the papers at regular intervals for my father-in-law and brother-in-law. The covid years did change that for a while, when I didn’t have to do it so frequently. I do think the state keeps close tabs on who should be getting the funds. The trouble is that so many qualify. Hate to see so many people not able to support themselves. Old age and disability made the benefits absolutely essential to my in-laws. I’m not in a position to make a moral judgment of others on it.
It’s a self fulfilling prophecy for the Left, to qualify, they take into consideration what is spent on housing, with Vermont prices so high, it lowers the available funds for food, hence …!
Ruth, I love the new procedure that the left is screaming about, so it must be good, only one SNAP card account per household address. Should help reduce fraud.
Approximately 186,000 dead people are reportedly eating very well on SNAP program in US
Question: Did the state pay SNAP benefits for 15 days of November pre-empting the amount that the feds released upon re-opening? If so, are SNAP benefits for the month of November 1.5 times normal, and draining the state’s reserve as a result of getting ahead of the shutdown resolution? Also, Speaker Kronowski disregards the fact that the US senate agreed to discuss and hold a vote on the ACA subsidies for 2026 in December, so more is likely to come on that. Likewise, VT congressional representatives have also not mentioned this agreement re: ACA, despite that it was a reasonable solution.
Looks that way Wendy, had 50% of my amount deposited into my 3 squares account, $12 last week; with a voicemail from Montpelier yesterday saying it was back up and running as usual, checking my account today, the full amount of $24 for the month of November was deposited
Ron,
$24.00 a month? Man, you must be living like a king. But seriously, one bottle of vanilla would take most of that. Anyway, have a nice weekend.
