Bobby Bethune, a 23-year-old resident of Burlington, has been apprehended by the Burlington Police Department. The February 29 arrest came after diligent detective work identified Bethune as the individual responsible for discharging a firearm during a disturbance at the intersection of St. Paul Street and Maple Street on November 17, 2023. Thankfully, no one was injured by the gunfire.

The incident took place that November morn around 3:28AM at the intersection of St. Paul Street and Maple Street. Responding promptly, officers encountered a 55-year-old man who claimed to be the victim. However, his disheveled appearance and noticeable intoxication led to his arrest for incapacity.

Undeterred by the suspect’s condition, the officers diligently pursued their investigation. It revealed that a scuffle had ensued involving the victim and three other males. Evidence suggested that a single gunshot was discharged, possibly originating from a jacket pocket worn by one of the men. Despite their efforts, the police were unable to recover any ballistic evidence at that time.

Bethune now faces serious charges, including aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. Following his arrest, he was arraigned on March 1, and subsequently released on certain conditions.

A closer look into Bethune’s criminal record reveals a troubling pattern. He has amassed a total of seven failures to appear in court, five charges for violating court orders or conditions (with two resulting in convictions), four felony charges (yet to yield any convictions), and a staggering 23 misdemeanor charges, of which he has been convicted in 17 instances. These details shed light on Bethune’s troubled past and raise concerns about his potential threat to the community.
