Boycott anti-semitic Middlebury, Jewish advocacy group urges parents

Middlebury College today was named one of the most anti-Jewish colleges in America by the nonprofit advocacy group StopAntisemitism. The group is urging Jewish parents and students to reconsider their application, citing the college’s failure to condemn rising antisemitism on campus following the October 7 terrorist attacks that killed over a thousand Jews in Israel.

As at many college campuses, lengthy pro-Palestinian student protests followed the attacks.

The group’s 2024 “Antisemitism on College and University Campuses” Report Card gives Middlebury College the grade of “D,” for enabling antisemitic radicals and failing to address hate-driven behavior on campus. Most college applications are due within weeks across the United States.

Report card excerpt

Specifically, the report noted that most Jewish students polled have experienced anti-semitism, don’t feel safe on parts of the campus, feel blamed for Israel’s actions, and do not feel safeguarded. Just over half of the students would recommend Middlebury. Jews are not included in the school’s DEI statement, and the administration asked them to remove the word “Jewish” from a planned vigil to honor the victims of the 10/7/2023 invasion of Israel.

Founder and Executive Director, Liora Rez noted: “Middlebury College has utterly failed to protect its Jewish students, allowing harassment, exclusion, and violent antisemitism to thrive unchecked. Despite reports of discrimination, death threats, and open hostility, the administration has taken little to no meaningful action, abandoning Jewish students in their time of need. This negligence not only endangers Jewish students but also sets a dangerous precedent for intolerance on campus. Parents, do not fund this complicity with your tuition dollars. Choose institutions that prioritize the safety and inclusion of all students— Jewish students deserve better.”

Neither the Middlebury College website nor the student newspaper have yet published a response to StopAntisemitism’s the call for Jewish parents and students to boycott the college.

  1. Well, when an ethnic group, religious group, or nationality is very obviously committing genocide, they need to expect push-back from other human beings who value the lives of all humanity.

    • So you blame and go after the Jews in our community who have nothing to do with what is going on in Gaza. Typical liberal view.

    • So, it makes sense that Middlebury College hired a pro-Palestine Israeli journalist to speak. Such objectivity! They didn’t have a pro-Israel Israeli reporter there for equal time. That College is a joke, like most liberal universities where “idea pathogens” brought to us “through the tyranny of political correctness” are going to destroy Western civilization.

    • October 7th, 2023, was genocide, but you only use that tired and over-used hyperbole for your pathetic side of the story.

    • Yeah Mary I hear you, when “an ethnic group” uses its non military citizens as human shields by setting up operations where regular citizens live, and then launching attacks on a sovereign nation killing men, women (and raping) and children, yeah I guess I kind of do expect some “push-back”. The end!

  2. gfon, please don’t put YOUR words in my mouth—that’s a sign of unclear thinking and could well be understood as an attempt to smear me. I have never been as deeply ashamed to be an American as I am now with the US government supplying the weapons to slaughter as many as 200,000 human beings in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon. It’s way past time for Americans to wake up to the criminality of our government and the national karma that we are creating. We all have blood on our hands.

    • 200,000!? It would be best if you worked for Hamas since they do not differentiate between militant and civilian deaths. It’s much lower than 40,000, as the Gazan Health Ministry, owned and operated by Hamas, sites. Yea, it was ok for October 7th to happen, in other words. We know who you voted for.

    • Your post seems to advocate attacking the local Jewish community for what is going on in Gaza. I am not putting my words in your mouth. You are saying them.

    • Mary- Please head to Gaza right away. I’m sure they could use your support. You’d fit right in. As a plus VT won’t have to have you around; win win prospect!

    • Apparently you don’t feel the same about our billions of dollars and American-made weaponry being sent to Ukraine though as there is no mention of that from you at all. What exactly is the disparity?

  3. Hey, jethrotull, you are another commenter putting YOUR words in my mouth. This is sloppy thinking and has no useful place in public discourse, exposing you as someone who is unable to do more than attempt to discredit me. (BTW, whomever I voted for has nothing to do with this.) The Gazan Health Ministry has not been operating for many months. The number 200,000 comes from well-known journalist Seymour Hersh. There are uncountable numbers of dead under the miles of rubble in Gaza.

    • Who you voted for has EVERYTHING to do with this as you live in a representative form of government. Are you aware that absolute power corrupts absolutely? What about the uncountable numbers of dead under the miles of rubble in Ukraine? What act precipitated the war that has waged on since before the militant, murderous terrorists who again attacked Israel without provocation last year? Are you equally as outraged at Ukranian-Americans here within the USA?

  4. Mary Stowe, I implore you to stop reading and/or listening to the propaganda from those who are truly bent on the genocide of the Jewish people. Same disgusting devil, different decade/century/millennium.

    Jethrotull1971 nailed it.

Please watch this and hear how those who live in Gaza really perceive Hamas and Israel, instead of terrorist-inspired propaganda. Please do not capitulate to the liar and be found on the wrong side of history by opposing Israel and the Jewish people, gaslighting them by ignorantly accusing Israel of what its enemies are doing and have tried to do to them for thousands of years. And yet…Israel and the Jewish people remain as a tribute that its best not to mess with those He’s chosen to bless.

    • A powerful and enlightening video – regardless of who came first, the chicken or the egg.

  5. jethrotull, the whole world sees the genocide being carried out on the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank and also the slaughter in Lebanon. An occupied people has the right under international law to resist aggression by the people occupying their land. It would help if you would look into the history of the founding of Israel. You many write whatever you will in these comments, but so far your comments are not really worthy of a response, so this will be my last response to you. I will let your cloudy thinking and attempts to smear me speak for themselves.

  6. When the endowment dries up the direction will change. Not a second before. Till such till that the realization hits home that something has shifted their entitled , funded by somebody else, thinking will remain.

This educational institution has benefited from the largesse of others for too long. It is time it stands on its own merits. If that comes to pass it will be a challenging time for them.

  7. stop all federal funding for colleges and universities and it will cause them to raise money on their own. quality education will survive, and if students have to work to pay part of itthey’ll learn to appreciate it more

    • Middlebury College owns about 60 percent of the town and has an endowment of almost $1.5 billion dollars. The fact that you think they, any Ivy League or NESCAC school relies on federal dollars shows you probably shouldn’t be offering advice to them and they certainly aren’t concerned with this group.

    • Hmmm, Harvard has a $34 Billion endowment and still receives $550 Million annually in federal research and scholarship funds. Middlebury may be a minor player. But that doesn’t mean Middlebury doesn’t value its federal funding.

    • The question wasn’t whether they value it or not Jay, it was whether they need it to survive, which none of the schools I mentioned need to survive. Of course, you would say up if I said down, but that wasn’t the question. 12% of their budget comes from the Feds, they could pay everyone’s tuition with the interest off the endowment.

  8. Speaking of genocide, how did that COVID KILL SHOT work out for your family. Big pharma has stockholders and board of directors. Have you checked to see the names connected to these operations.

    • And that’s supposed to mean what? Why don’t you just put the names you think sound Jewish within those triple parentheses and be done with it. Of course there’s Fauci, Biden, Pelosi, etc etc but not Jewish so they don’t count.

    • This citation is Matthew Hoh’s opinion of what he sees from a distance of between 600 to 2000 meters (more than a mile) away. And, of course, we readers of his substack post don’t see anyone but fellow observers either.

“There were no warplanes or drones visible. The school kids and other audience members of a genocide who gawked and put money into a telescope left disappointed as they saw no bombs or missiles, no artillery or tank fire. There were no blast waves from controlled demolitions to wash over them, and the numbers of smoke pillars from smoldering and cratered homes and schools were in the single digits, their fires not vigorous enough to be smelled.”

Ostensibly Hoh’s complaint is with the juxtaposition of an Israeli school field trip to an observation deck looking over a portion of the Gaza Strip where thousands of people are suffering. But what Mr. Hoh doesn’t explain, perhaps because he is unaware of the circumstances recorded in the video cited by Mr. Green, is that the Palestinians suffering ‘a genocide’ aren’t accusing Israelis for the bedlam. They’re accusing Hamas in near unanimous first-person expressions of disgust and anger.

If anything, Mr. Hoh should watch the video cited by Mr. Green. Perhaps then he would realize the absurdity of his conflated visit to a national park or the boardwalk. And he might be well advised to read Nietzche’s entire quote, that begins with a caution: “Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster… “.

According to the Palestinians interviewed as they walked through the rubble of their former neighborhoods, there is only one monster – Hamas.

  9. Oh the irony. Almost every comment in here is just fighting over whatever the media tells you to fight over.

Meanwhile the bankers and robber barron’s poison you and your children, lock you in your homes over a lie, inject you with poison, rob you blind, bring you to the brink of war, tell you what you can and cannot talk about.

Racism, Wokeism, anti-semitism, Sexism…. Etc. Sow division, play it ad nauseum in the media. Rinse and repeat,

    Where is your outrage?

Remember, those who silence others are rarely on the right side of history.

    • With all due respect, few of us commenting here have any idea what it is to live under the circumstances occurring in the Gaza Strip. Yes, we were lied to about Covid and the vaccine. Our kids were locked out of school. But we weren’t locked in our homes. We may have been locked out of our place of work. But our families weren’t kidnapped, beaten or shot because we complained here on VDC. We weren’t starved. Our houses weren’t blown up. We still have all our limbs. God only knows that the Palestinians and Israelis suffering from the fanatic Hamas terrorists would love to be as well off as we are.

    • The irony of the creators and purveyors of “isms” are one in the same goes way back – i.e., the agreement to establish a “State” hammered out by one of the Brothers of Grim – Rothchilds. Interesting to note that Northern Ireland was carved out by “the Crown” to separate a country based on religious/political doctrines. When people realize “the Crown” the Vatician, and the “jewish” State are unified to divide, are the encompassing “secret society” with the same bloodline going back before Christ, maybe, just maybe, the nonsense and malevolent tactic of all “isms” will cease and desist.

    • Jay, you’ve earned my respect numerous times.

I’m not saying that these two things compare, they don’t directly. I’m trying to tell you the same people are responsible for both actions, and yet continue to tell you how to think.

While I write this, I assume later on this will come back to bite me and I will lose something of value based upon whom I believe is responsible.

Also, our circumstances appear to be different. I wasn’t able to go to most of the places that I frequented previously, and that meant I was mostly locked in my home, just because I wouldn’t wear a medical device or take an experimental drug which has easily proven to be deadly.

  10. Must be careful, bankers and a robber baron have names. The cast of characters involved in the over throw of the United States runs through many circles. Yes, i do have names and most of them have been your great leaders in this country for the last fifty years and many are not Jewish. Oh by the way, where is Fauci??????? and who set up Hamas????

  11. “Stop antisemitism” does not represent Jewish students. It is a pro-apartheid, pro-genocide organization whose purpose is to stop criticism of the far right ethnonationalist government of Israel.

    • James I have a gal for you- Mary Stowe. Maybe the VDC can fix you both up- sounds like a perfect match!
