A Hong Kong woman has been accused of attempting to smuggle eastern box turtles from Vermont into Quebec across a lake straddling the border.
Authorities say Wan Yee Ng, 41, of Hong Kong repeatedly rented the same property on the American shore of Lake Wallace near Beecher Falls while her husband rented a property on the Canadian side of the lake.
In June, Ng, was observed preparing an inflatable kayak while Canadian authorities learned that two people had set off in an inflatable craft from their side paddling toward the United States.
Before she could set off from shore, Ng was detained by U.S. Border Patrol for suspected smuggling. Agents said they found 29 turtles individually wrapped in socks to protect their shells and restrict movement.
“Turtles with colorful markings are especially prized in the domestic and foreign pet trade market, particularly in China and Hong Kong,” stated a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Burlington. “These animals are protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, an international agreement to protect fish, wildlife and plants that are or may become threatened with extinction.”
Last week, a federal grand jury returned an indictment against Ng for attempted smuggling. She faces 10 years in prison.

And even now as I read this, 29 illegal immigrants have crossed our northern border, and US border patrol will do nothing. Buy hey we saved 29 turtles!
Allegedly, the turtles fetch a price of $1,000 each per another report. How is it two Chinese Nationals (VISA status not reported?) can set up a smuggling operation stradling the US/Canadian border? The answer is a network of smuggling operations of humans, drugs, and critters is ongoing on the Southern border and Northern border. Report of 10,000 illegals were transported from Upstate NY to sanctuary New York City recently. While countless criminals make money committing crimes of all sorts, the laboring taxpayer is funding their operation, protection, and support.
She faces 10 years in prison for smuggling freakin turtles? Murderers don’t get 10 years.
$1,000 a turtle. She’s in the wrong business. The cartels smuggle people for up to $15,000 per person. https://www.newsweek.com/human-smugglers-charging-15000-per-person-us-border-crossing-1597043
As much as the human smugglers may try, you can’t stuff a migrant human into a sock to keep them quiet and fit 10 of them in a kayak. They wont do any jail time, and neither will most of the human smugglers until we get serious. The first step in getting serious is getting democrats out of the executive branch…
