The body of a missing Vermont man was recovered from the Connecticut River on Sunday, Oct. 19, according to the Journal-Opinion.
New Hampshire Fish and Game conservation officers were notified at 11:28 AM that a man from Vermont, last seen in a canoe on the Connecticut River, had been reported missing. The man was reportedly last seen around 10 PM on Oct. 18 leaving from the Putney side of the river. His overturned canoe was later found near Ferry Road in Westmoreland.
Divers with the Water Rescue Task Force located and recovered the man’s body at 2:52 PM, close to where the canoe had been found.
New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol later identified the victim as Cory Walker, 41, of Westminster Station. Authorities said Walker often camped along the Connecticut River and sometimes slept overnight in his canoe.
Police said the death was not considered suspicious. An autopsy determined that Walker died from accidental drowning.
Police investigate Derby storage unit theft
Vermont State Police are investigating a theft from a storage unit on Up North Drive in Derby reported on Oct. 19.
Investigators said that sometime between 6 PM on Oct. 18 and 7 AM on Oct. 19, an unknown person stole several power tools, including multiple Dewalt nail guns, a 12-inch chop saw, a circular saw, and a cut-off saw missing its guard.

West Rutland man charged in Shrewsbury gun shop burglary attempt
A West Rutland man has been charged in connection with an attempted break-in at Carrara’s Gun Shop earlier this month.
Police said Ean Bruno, 27, was identified through security footage showing a man with a crowbar attempting to force entry into the shop’s back door on Oct. 12. The attempt caused more than $500 in damage.
After the shop owner shared security images on social media, the suspect was identified by members of the public and confirmed by law enforcement. Bruno was cited for attempted burglary, possession of burglar’s tools, and unlawful mischief.
He is scheduled to appear in Vermont Superior Court in Rutland on Dec. 15.
Berlin police report multiple retail theft cases
Berlin police cited several people in recent days in connection with retail theft and related offenses.
Eric Leonard, 45, of Barre City, was cited for violating court-ordered conditions and trespass notices after returning to Kohl’s despite being barred from the store.
Mark Barter, 41, a transient from Montpelier, was identified through public tips after allegedly stealing alcohol from Kinney Drugs on Oct. 15 and Oct. 17. He was cited for two counts of retail theft.
Katelyn Grant, 24, of Williamstown, was cited for retail theft and unlawful mischief after allegedly stealing items at Berlin Mall and Central Vermont Medical Center on Oct. 15.
John Shambo Jr., 62, of Essex Junction, was cited for retail theft after allegedly stealing clothing from Kohl’s on Oct. 17.
Brittany Moses, 36, of Berlin, was cited for retail theft from Kinney Drugs on Oct. 15.
Each suspect is scheduled to appear in Vermont Superior Court, Washington Criminal Division, in November or December.
