A 19-year-old Hartland man reported missing after fleeing the scene of a car crash Friday night was found deceased Saturday afternoon along the Ottauquechee River, according to the Woodstock Police Department.
Police said the incident began on November 28 at around 11:06 p.m., when officers responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash on East Woodstock Road near Britten Lane. When officers arrived, they found a grey 2013 Infiniti G37 sedan that had veered off the road and struck a tree.
The driver, identified as 19-year-old Benjamin Johnsen of Hartland, had fled before first responders arrived. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate him.
At approximately noon the following day, November 29, Johnsen’s father, Bruce Johnsen, came to the Woodstock Police Department to report his son missing. Police launched a missing-person investigation and requested additional resources to assist in the search.
Later that afternoon, at about 4:16 p.m., a body was discovered on the bank of the Ottauquechee River in the area of Old River Road and Rolling Ridge Drive. Woodstock emergency personnel responded and pronounced the individual deceased at the scene. The man was later positively identified as Benjamin Johnsen.
Police secured the area and began a death investigation. Johnsen’s body was transported to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death. According to investigators, early findings do not suggest the death is suspicious.
