Restoring Integrity and Trust in Elections (RITE) filed a lawsuit last Tuesday against the city of Burlington, Vermont, for allowing non-citizens to participate in its elections.
RITE filed the lawsuit against the city of Burlington for allowing noncitizens to vote in local city or Burlington School District elections. The lawsuit alleges that in doing so, the city violated “voter’s qualifications” enshrined in the Vermont State Constitution.
“Activists are working overtime to undermine democracy in Vermont by extending the right to vote to noncitizens,” Derek Lyons, President of RITE, said in a press release. “This anti-democratic agenda is progressing at an alarming pace.”
The city’s annual education budget is funded with tax dollars through the State Education Fund, which is created by the Board of School Commissioners. By allowing noncitizens to vote to elect School commissioners, they now “have the power to affect financial decisions that have implications for all Vermont taxpayers,” RITE alleged.
“Permitting noncitizens to vote on these issues violates the Vermont Constitution,” the lawsuit states.
In November 2018, a similar provision was approved by the city of Montpelier allowing noncitizens to vote in certain local elections. Two years later in November of 2020, the city of Winooski approved a measure allowing noncitizens to vote in all city elections.
The Vermont General Assembly voted to approve the Montpelier and Winooski amendments in May of 2021, but were vetoed by Republican Gov. Phil Scott later that June. The General Assembly overrode those vetoes later that month, approving the amendments.
“The non-citizen voting movement achieves the left’s goal of legalizing foreign interference in American elections,” Lyons said in the press release. “It threatens the rule of law and must be stopped before it further infects Vermont and other states in this country.
The offices of Scott and Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.

It would appear that somebody ( or somebodies) should take a moment to read the state constitution .
To my recollection, it may state something about voters being citizens not just having a certificate of attendance.
Vermont , despite the wishes of some, is not a series of independent city states rambling it’s way through the universe picking and choosing what laws it wants to obey and those it chooses not too. Something like the US Constitution.
Now if they can find the right judge……
Constitution ? What’s a constitution ? These charlatans wipe their bottoms on constitutions !
they voted for this, laws don’t count, rights and freedoms don’t count…..see that’s why they love a democracy….that’s why working Vermonters are broke, the masses who are employed by the state, the masses who get a free meal by the state out number the working stiffs so they just vote to take more of their money. For the goodness of the children of course…..of course.
The Legislature changed the law, allowing noncitizens voting, but they are forbidden to make any law in violation to the States Constitution.
SECTION VIII.
The members of the House of Representatives shall be chosen annually, by ballot, by the freemen of this State, on the first Tuesday of September, forever (except this present year) and shall meet on the second Thursday of the succeeding October, and shall be stiled, The General Assembly of the State of Vermont; and shall have power to choose their Speaker, Secretary of the State, their Clerk, and other necessary officers of the House—sit on their own adjournments—prepare bills and enact them into laws—judge of the elections and qualifications of their own members—they may expel a member, but not a second time for the same cause—They may administer oaths (or affirmations) on examination of witnesses—redress grievances—impeach State criminals—grant charters of incorporation—constitute towns, boroughs, cities, and counties, and shall have all other powers necessary for the Legislature of a free State, but they shall have no power to add to, alter, abolish, or infringe any part of this constitution.
I wouldn’t be surprised that the mayor (a very liberal all inclusive) Emma Mulvaney-Stanak was part in spearheading this movement. Her path seems to be inline with this potential outcome. Worse than CA Gov Newsom for crapology.
About time! Keep fighting and never surrender!
Hey Boilington ! Why not send ballots to Chairman Xi, Prez Vlad, Ayatollah Khamenei, and the little round guy in the “hermit kingdom”?
One would think that the overtaxed Burlington homeowners would be raising Holy-H, over this nonsense of letting non-citizens vote, that means anyone within the city, yes any vagrant able to hold a pen could vote, for a slight stipend and we know that would be ” illegal “, but then again with no morals or follow the laws or constitution isn’t in their agenda, this is how the liberal nonsense bills pass……………
You are the money tree and they will bleed you dry. if you let them, voting is a privilege for US Citizens ” legal citizens “
Burlington is being subsidized they rest of the state, there taxes generally speaking 35% lower than everybody else. They also don’t have to pay for their sewer infractions or seem to even need to upgrade their system, to which they’ve put on thousands of new homes to a failed system. We’ll pick up that tab too.
They are not remotely paying their fair share.
I shudder to think of how many “grants” Burlington gets…it’s free money after all. Just don’t look at your tax bill in another town….because it’s paying for Burlington spending…
Oh, and aren’t’ they rebuilding a high school to the tune of how may millions….millions of country folk tax money.
S. Burlington no better with their TIFF funded projects…taking tax money from the school budget.
It is widely reported that 49 States are providing voter registrations at welfare offices as well as DMVs. I assumed when illegal border crashers are in the “processing center”, or handed their welcome packets with their cell phones and pre-loaded debit cards, they were provided a pre-filled voter registration form? I hear the Governor of Massachusetts has sent a team to Texas to tell the illegals “don’t come, don’t come” to Massachusetts – they’re full, allegedly. How many busloads or plane loads will be, or all ready, diverted to Vermont? Wide open borders with free accomodations means more voters for the installed regime, we get it now.
This is part of a conscious effort to rig elections. My former friend and “groomer”, Marina Brown, explained to me a comparable tactic.
Neil Johnson, I Don’t know where you got this ridiculous information but as a resident of burlington I can for a fact tell you that homeowners don’t get any funding for taxes. Any grants or funding the city gets are for specific purposes and relief from taxes for homeowners isn’t one.
Constitution? Isn’t that what Joe does in his shorts every day
