BLOTTER: Two arrested after firearm discharged in domestic dispute in Lyndonville

LYNDONVILLE — Vermont State Police arrested two people early Sunday after a domestic dispute at a residence on Eastern Avenue resulted in gunfire.

Police responded to a 911 call at 1:46 a.m. and determined that Kyleigh Phelps, 33, and Jacob Mallet, 30, had engaged in a physical altercation inside the home.

During the dispute, a firearm was discharged multiple times inside the residence.

No one was struck by the gunfire.

Both Phelps and Mallet were arrested and processed at the St. Johnsbury barracks before being taken to Northeast Regional Correctional Facility.

Phelps was charged with first-degree aggravated domestic assault and reckless endangerment and was ordered held without bail.

Mallet was charged with domestic assault and held on $2,000 bail.

They are scheduled to appear in Caledonia Criminal Court at 12:30 p.m. Monday.


Driver crashes into pole on Scott Highway in Groton

GROTON — A St. Johnsbury man crashed his car into a utility pole Tuesday morning after falling asleep while driving on Scott Highway, Vermont State Police said.

The crash happened around 10:29 a.m. near 1742 Scott Highway.

Police said Brock Houghton, 25, was driving a 2006 Honda Accord when he veered off the road, struck a utility pole and continued down an embankment into a field.

Houghton and his passenger, Erin Smith, 33, of St. Johnsbury, were wearing seat belts and reported no injuries, police said.

JTB Towing removed the vehicle from the scene.

The road was dry at the time of the crash, and the weather was cloudy.
