BLOTTER: 6-year-old hit by pickup on Stowe Mountain Rd/ Fatal crash/ Store fracas

A 60-year-old Brighton man died following a single-vehicle crash Monday morning on Vermont Route 111 in Morgan.

Vermont State Police said troopers from the Derby Barracks were notified at about 8:17 a.m. March 30 of a crash in the town of Morgan. Investigation determined that Cecil Daniels, 60, of Brighton, was traveling west when his truck left the right side of the roadway and struck a tree.

Daniels was transported to North Country Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.


A 6-year-old child suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries after being struck by a pickup truck Monday afternoon on Mountain Road in Stowe.

Troopers responded at about 4:58 p.m. near the intersection of Edson Hill Road. Police said Nicholas Chegwidden, 42, of Stowe, was driving a 2024 Toyota Tacoma northbound when the juvenile pedestrian crossed the roadway in front of the vehicle.

The child was taken to the UVM Medical Center for treatment. Chegwidden, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured. The truck sustained minor front-end damage.


No injuries were reported in a Monday evening crash involving a vehicle and a parked sap truck in Clarendon, but the driver was cited for DUI.

At about 6:38 p.m., troopers from the Rutland Barracks responded to Creek Road south of Walker Mountain Road. Police said a southbound vehicle operated by a driver identified as Benjamin Bruno, 44, of East Wallingford failed to avoid a truck parked on the west shoulder.

The parked vehicle was occupied by Heidi Congdon, 38, of Clarendon, and Robert Congdon Sr., 68, who was operating sap-collecting equipment in the truck bed at the time. Following the crash, the striking vehicle became disabled and veered off the roadway.

Troopers said the driver showed signs of impairment, was screened for DUI, and processed at the Rutland Barracks before being released with a citation to appear in Rutland Superior Court.

A late-night altercation at a convenience store in Arlington led to a DUI and resisting arrest charge.

At about 11:30 p.m., Vermont State Police from the Shaftsbury Barracks responded to a reported fight at Stewart’s on Vermont Route 313 West involving multiple intoxicated individuals.

Following an investigation, troopers arrested Leroy E. Bellows, 45, of Arlington, on suspicion of DUI and resisting arrest. Bellows was processed and released with a citation to appear in Vermont Superior Court, Bennington Criminal Division, on April 20 at 8:30 AM.
