On Wednesday lawmakers in the House Transportation Committee discussed a bill that is meant to further nudge Vermonters into electric vehicles…or give up on driving altogether.
The bill H.693 is sponsored by Rep. Sara Coffey, D-Guilford, and others. It states, “Every reasonable effort shall be made to obligate and deploy the monies appropriated for expenditure under this section in fiscal year 2025 in order to achieve a pace of electric vehicle adoption and transition away from personal vehicle ownership necessary to meet the emissions reduction requirements of [the Climate Action Plan].”
The bill is overall intended to improve transportation infrastructure. It states it is to “increase the annual appropriations to the Agency of Transportation for the Better Roads Program and the Municipal Highway and Stormwater Mitigation Program within the Municipal Mitigation Assistance Program in fiscal year 2025.”
More infrastructure for EVs
The bill asks for more public money for electric charging stations. Its purpose is to “codify the existing State goals for electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) along the State highway network and requirement that the Agency of Transportation annually report on the State’s efforts to meet those goals and also require that the Agency report on efforts to increase EVSE in the State and the operational status of EVSE available to the public.”
Ian Degutis who is Traffic Operations Engineer for the Agency of Transportation put into perspective what time and money will be needed for creating and upgrading electric charging infrastructure.
He told the committee, “It’s going to take a while, there are wait times in terms of the electrical infrastructure that would be needed for each of the sites, in some cases 40 to 52 weeks, and there are the transformers [other electric infrastructure]” he said. “In most places we will need to upgrade sites to a tune of $60,000 to $80,000.”
A part of the bill calls for “appropriate $3,000,000.00 to the Agency of Commerce and Community Development for a continuation of the EVSE [ electric vehicle supply equipment] Grant Program in fiscal year 2025.”
Degutis noted that adherence to federal policy is part of this initiative. He stated, “the latest iteration of these goals was to reflect the national electric vehicle infrastructure program which is the federal program that says we ought to have a fast-charger or multiple fast-chargers within a mile of the interstate or the designated highway corridor.”
Another proposal in this bill is more funds for electric bikes. It calls to allocate $250,000 to the Agency of Transportation for an eBike Incentive Program in the fiscal year of 2025.
The challenges of EV chargers on the grid
In addition to cost challenges, there are challenges on the electric grid as well. In a study published by Science Direct in August of 2023, it states some of these challenges.
The study states, “The rapid increase in charging high-power electric vehicles (EVs) poses challenges to the power system, including load profile distortion, voltage deviation, frequency imbalance, harmonic injection, distribution system component capacity overloading, excess power loss, and grid instability. This study quantitatively analyzes the impact of EV charging on the power system. With an increase in EV penetration from 25% to 50%, the peak power demand on the system rises by 166%.”
The study continues that newer “smart charging systems” will eventually help alleviate much of the grid overload.

Forcing Vermonters into cars that are impractical for our needs and too expensive for most of us to even think about purchasing is supposedly being done so tiny Vermont can be a shining example for the rest of the country, meanwhile China and India continue to build out a dirty coal infrastructure. Perhaps the sooner cars are made unobtainable by Vermont’s liberal elites, then John and Jane Q might figure out what they have done- to themselves. But I’m not optimistic. As further GWSA legislation is churned out- and the “fees” required are charged to the users and ratepayers- most of those that can will indeed vote with their feet- and move out of Vermont. Many will be the “beneficiary” of our benevolent legislature- magnanimously giving them back a small portion of the costs of these “programs” to sustain a rather meager and glum existence here in the people’s republic. Vermont may well turn into the first state completely dependent on tourism and second homeowners to remain in existence. I will savor the day when climate evangelists such as rebecca white, chris bray and richard mccormack can no longer reasonable sustain their lifestyles here in Vermont and are forced to leave…
Vermont always has been a state dependent on tourism and how do we show appreciation and accommodation for our tourist base?…we turn half the motels into flophouses for junkies, we dont enforce the laws against car break ins and we allow tent cities in public spaces. Tourists soon figure out that New Hampshire is just as nice but without so many syringes and panhandlers. The demoprogs have negatively targeted tourism as well as farming, and those used to be sacred cows.
Go to the supermarket, gas up your car or go to Town Meeting and look at the people around you, knowing that a majority of those who vote willingly and enthusiastically brought this upon us.

Nowhere in the US exists a suitable replacement for the internal combustion engine for Fire Equipment, Ambulances nor Interstate transport of goods. There exists no suitable alternative for the road construction machinery you see paving our roads. In fact, it would require multiple ambulances to do the job one IC ambulance can do- It would give new meaning to the term “range anxiety” for the person suffering a heart attack in Cabot to be successfully transported to either DHMC or UVMMC.

The model being proposed internationally is to move to a rental model. People will not even own their appliances, which will also be rented. Whether our legislature is aware of the complete agenda and outcome is not understand. If they are, there is no transparency. According to the World Economic Forum stakeholders this will reduce planned obsolescence and increase the number of parts that can be swapped out and replaced in all manufactured products. Companies will now have the incentives in place to do what is right for the environment by extending the life span of products.

The former will require an additional insurance policy as long as the electric bicycle or car is parked outside at least 50’ from any structure. That will be fun when we have had a snowstorm followed by bitterly cold weather. We are already a one vehicle family, as well as one phone, and hardly any electric gadgets ( no dryer, no electric heaters, no ac, no electric kitchen appliances etc. ) in our household and with that electric bill only continues to climb. With no vehicles, I can’t wait to see the response time from an already slow response time for fire and/or emergency services. Sorry m’am the busses are behind schedule today so the emergency services personnel cannot make it to your house for another three hours. Oh dear, the bus was filled with livestock being moved from one place to another… uh huh… This does not even include the actual environmental costs of using only all electric vehicles…. Mmm how man6 tons of earth was moved and processed for a few pounds of necessary rare earth metals, how much water was converted to toxic sludge, how people lost their lives to toxic exposures, how far was all this transported to ports to receive the raw materials which are then shipped somewhere else for processing, then shipped to yet another place to be made into a battery, then shipped to the vehicle manufacturer and then to the vehicle dealer. And oh the increased weight of the vehicle causing more road damage. Just some things to think about. Electric alternative energy is currently more environmentally damaging than any other energy source. The entire carbon credit system is a scam to make the same players rich that also extremely benefited from the COVID scam. They use the same scare tactic playbook. Yes we should all conserve at that includes our state government. They need to not constantly invent feel good, virtue signaling programs, they need to cut their budget by about 50% and stick to the basics. Basic education, basic public safety, basic border protection.
Just one question: Who votes for these people?
The dominion machines do, and now that we are not allowed to count the votes if we live in a town larger than 1000, there is complete control of the outcomes from media to votes, combined with the qr codes that identify your mail-in vote on last election its a complete dictatorship.

I am an EV driver and an EV writer. This headline is very misleading. And that’s a shame, as it’s upsetting people about a bill merely looking to ramp up EV infrastructure and incentivize the purchase of electric bikes, not take away modes of personal transportation. Please do better next time. A correction might be even be in order.

But there comes a time to admit to ourselves, that even while we believe in individual liberty and freedom, to ‘live and let live’ as long as one doesn’t infringe on the rights of others to do the same, progressive liberals believe we individualists are a threat to their existence because we aren’t capable of managing our own affairs, let alone theirs.

I was just at a city council get-to-know meeting… well, they have all the scoop on what kind of grants they can get their little hands on, how much those are, and that in a mere 10-15 years, we MIGHT see some improvement for our fabulous lake “city.”

Notice the slight of hand here, first it mentions “electric vehicle adoption “ and then “transition away from personal vehicle ownership” never specifically saying internal combustion vehicles, that’s because what is really quietly be advocated here is in direct alignment with the WEF plan that we should “own nothing and be happy” or you will be serfs and powerless to do anything about it. Much as they hate to admit it, there is not enough rare earth metals for everyone to have (or own) an electric car (that’s why they’re called “rare”) and there is nowhere near enough electrical grid capacity to handle the transition. The current grid utilizes a large portion of fossil fuel to generate electricity, thus the reference to transitioning away from personal ownership “necessary to meet the emissions reduction requirements of the Climate Action Plan”. I would recommend that these legislators abandon their personal vehicle ownership and start walking to Montpelier that would greatly reduce their time there to wreak havoc.
More and more people and municipalities are realizing the EV is not the way to go. Added trip times waiting to charge or waiting in line to access chargers. Distances are cut by ac heat lighting radio wipers. Driving in mountain areas also cut deeply into charge. Not good for Vermonters at all. To many rural area living.
