Burlington High School graduate and Olympic bronze medalist Ilona Maher has been chosen as the subject for the next Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition, S.I. reported August 28. She will debut on the magazine’s digital issue this month.
The S.I. website said:

“She led Team USA to its first bronze medal in rugby at the Paris Olympics and has been making headlines ever since. To say she is a powerhouse would be an understatement. The Virginia native has always used her platform to champion body positivity, encourage women to love themselves and prove that strength and confidence come in all forms.
“Maher never shies away from pointing out injustices and calling out when the fashion and sports industries fall short. She went viral on social media following the 2024 games for her sense of humor online, advocacy for female athletes and signature hashtag and personal motto, #beastbeautybrains.”
The “beast” part of Maher is evident from her play on the rugby pitch. Brains? Maher graduated from Quinnipiac College and has an MBA. S.I. addresses the beauty part:
“Maher makes her SI Swimsuit debut on the cover of September’s digital issue. She was photographed by Ben Watts in Bellport, NY including the beautiful Fire Island Beach.
“Styling the athlete was a “peak moment” for SI Swimsuit’s fashion editors. The model was prepared to dress bold, show some skin and flaunt her hard-earned muscles. While for most photo shoots, the focus is on the fashion first, things were different for Maher. Styling came second to what the brand really wanted to highlight: her beautiful back muscles, strong legs and infectious smile.”

Has she always been a woman?
Asking for a friend.
The photo speaks volumes.
The internet claims she’s a natural born woman, in which case, she should go right ahead and crush it.
Of course you are correct. We should not jump to unfair conclusion. Mea culpa.
Still, she looks a lot like a guy outta Upper Michigan I went through Infantry Basic Training with back in 1968. Very strong, very athletic–everyone in the platoon gladly let him carry the heavy M-60 machine gun, nicknamed the ‘Pig,’ that he liked to carry. No lipstick on it though…
Supporting Kamalaism because she thinks a woman president would be cool. No more support from me.
Maher is a beautiful, athletic, and intelligent woman who is challenging the stereotype that female athletes can’t be feminine. Good for her!
But what is a woman………………….
