A New Hampshire man has been charged in connection with the bank robbery that occurred at Passumpsic Savings Bank in Newport yesterday morning June 24, Newport Police Chief Travis Bingham said.
As reported in the Newport Dispatch, Barry English, 38, of Nashua, N.H., was arrested and charged with robbery, and assault.
English has a criminal record going back more than a decade. In 2012, he was arrested for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, and other felonies, while on probation from the New Hampshire prison system, according to police and media reports.
The June 24 incident occurred at 9:42 a.m. when Newport Police responded to a report of a robbery at Passumpsic Savings Bank on Gardner Street. The suspect allegedly passed a note to a bank teller demanding large bills and verbally threatened staff with a firearm, although no weapon was brandished. The suspect then fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash in a black BMW sedan with New Hampshire license plates.
Following an investigation, English was identified as a suspect, and police departments across the region were notified to be on the lookout for him.
On Monday afternoon, New Hampshire State Police located the suspect’s vehicle traveling on Interstate 93. English led state police on a pursuit before being stopped and taken into custody in Plymouth, New Hampshire.
Chief Bingham expressed gratitude to residents and community members who provided information and helpful tips to the department, which aided in identifying the suspect.
The case remains under investigation, and English is expected to face charges in both Vermont and New Hampshire.

Anyone who robs a bank threatening the use of a gun but not showing one should be handed a cash bag with blank pieces of paper. Fake gun…fake cash. What banks and other retailers really need is a sleepy gas setup. Most banks have a vestibule doorway with an outside door and an inside door. When the dirtball is exiting, both doors should lock and trap said dirtball in the vestibule, which would then be flooded with sleepy gas. Then the unconscious thief can be handed over to police and prosecutors for the traditional no bail release.
