Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is ramping up efforts to repeal Act 18, Vermont’s Clean Heat Standard, by launching a statewide mail campaign urging residents to contact their legislators. The campaign warns that the law will lead to increased energy prices and place a financial burden on Vermonters.
AFP’s mailers aim to educate the public on what they describe as the “harsh realities” of Act 18, highlighting concerns about government mandates driving up costs. The organization previously ran a similar digital and mail campaign last summer and has now expanded its outreach with an online action center where Vermonters can contact their representatives directly.
In January, the Vermont Public Utility Commission (PUC) released its final report on Act 18, confirming that the policy will result in higher energy costs. The Clean Heat Standard is designed to reduce carbon emissions by shifting Vermont toward cleaner energy sources, but critics argue it will increase heating expenses for residents and businesses.
Ross Connolly, AFP’s Northeast Regional Director, criticized state lawmakers for failing to address rising energy costs.
“It’s disappointing that the legislative majority in Montpelier is refusing to address the very real problems Vermonters face today, including rising energy costs and the exorbitant cost of living,” Connolly said. “This week, Vermonters have the opportunity to hold their lawmakers accountable for failing to deliver real results, starting with demanding their representatives to repeal Act 18 at Town Meetings.”
AFP vows to continue pressuring the legislature to repeal the law, arguing that Vermont needs policies that lower costs rather than increase financial strain. With Town Meeting Day offering a chance for public discussion, AFP is urging residents to make their voices heard and push for a repeal of Act 18.

No surprise here! Americans for Prosperity is heavily financed by Koch Industries, owned by billionaire Charles Koch. Welcome to the new normal.
That’s it? Your best shot? AFP has decided to help Vermont’s taxpayers, ratepayers and anyone that occupies a heated structure to repeal a law that even the VT Public Utilities Commission states. ” Finally, after nearly 18 months of work on the Clean Heat Standard, the Commission concludes that, while the CHS prescribed in Act 18 is theoretically workable (with the changes discussed in Chapter X of this report), the Commission does not believe that this program is well suited to Vermont. Our state has a long history of implementing innovative and effective programs to reduce energy use; it would be more effective to support this existing work rather than introduce a complex new regulatory layer that would disrupt existing programs. In this report, the Commission recommends alternative structures for consideration by the Legislature.”

Or- are you in the krowinski camp, pearl-clutching over AFP, but obfuscating the lobbying efforts of Vermont’s NGO’s and Utilities that gain greatly from this carbon tax-“Krowinski criticized what she called ‘misinformation campaigns funded by out-of-state groups,’ particularly the Koch brothers’ Americans for Prosperity, which have ‘spread false claims’ about the bill, including misleading information about mandatory heat pump installations.”

Sure seems to a bunch of Vermont folks, that the legislature’s action this year are geared toward the enrichment of the utilities, NGO’s and legislator’s campaign funds.
The “checkback” was a mandatory part of ACT 18, the PUC weighed in, said don’t do it- and it appears the legislature will sandbag their constituents in favor of themselves. Be good to figure out who the villains are in this….
how come john has no last name? weren’t we supposed to use our real names?
This is important to do, because people may believe that the CHS is “gone with the windbags” (Democratic supermajority).
Glad to see you all voted yes on all the school budgets this time. Now the cave monkeys in the Vermont statehouse will do nothing to cut property taxes this year. Never fear the tax bill will only increase six percent this year on top of the fourteen percent last year. Now did you vote for all the bonding that will increase your water and sewer bills in the future????? No more p…ing and moaning will be allowed on this website in the future.
