The American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Medical Association have recommended against gender transition surgeries for youths, becoming the first major medical associations in the U.S. to narrow its guidance on pediatric gender care.
The ASPS, a medical organization formed in 1931 and representing 11,000 surgeons worldwide, included this recommendation in a February 3 Position Statement on Gender Surgery for Children and Adolescents:
“ASPS concludes there is insufficient evidence demonstrating a favorable risk-benefit ratio for the pathway of gender-related endocrine and surgical interventions in children and adolescents. ASPS recommends that surgeons delay gender-related breast/chest, genital, and facial surgery until a patient is at least 19 years old.”
The position statement went to the group’s 11,000 members, recommending that surgeons delay transgender-related chest, genital, and facial surgeries until a patient is at least 19 years old. The ASPS is the first major medical organization in the U.S. to reject transgender activists’ ideological push to mutilate young people without sufficient evidence.
The AMA stance against juvenile gender surgery was reported in the Daily Wire and the New York Times.
For years, criticizing gender reassignment surgeries for minors would unleash a cancel campaign over being “transphobic” and intolerant. The media amplified such attacks. Then the issuance of the Cass Independent Review of Gender Identity Services for Children and Young People led countries to significantly curtail such procedures in Europe.
On the same day, leaders of the U.S. Agency of Health & Human Services praised the ASPS report.
“We commend the American Society of Plastic Surgeons for standing up to the overmedicalization lobby and defending sound science,” Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. said. “By taking this stand, they are helping protect future generations of American children from irreversible harm.”
“Today marks another victory for biological truth in the Trump administration,” said Deputy Health and Human Services Secretary Jim O’Neill. “The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has set the scientific and medical standard for all provider groups to follow.”
“When the medical ethics textbooks of the future are written, they’ll look back on sex-rejecting procedures for minors the way we look back on lobotomies,” said Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Administrator Mehmet Oz, MD. “I applaud the American Society of Plastic Surgeons for placing itself on the right side of history by opposing these dangerous, unscientific experiments.”
However, many academics in the United States continue to push back on the Cass Report and the effort to curtail transitioning procedures for children.
Many parents have complained that psychologists and other experts push parents to begin gender transitioning while children are still minors, often warning that failure to do so could lead to the death of their children by suicide.
That complaint was at the heart of a case this month that led to the first major verdict against doctors for such surgeries. In New York, a jury awarded $2 million to Fox Varian, 22, over the double mastectomy performed on her while she was a minor. Psychologist Kenneth Einhorn and surgeon Simon Chin were held responsible for failing to follow the standards of care of reasonable doctors.
The American Association of Pediatricians continues to affirm comprehensive care for transgender children.

So now, VT’s shield laws will not protect practitioners from lawsuits, as trans surgeries for minors are now not considered, by the AMA and ASPS, to be best practice. GREAT NEWS.
It seems that some medical professionals are taking their Hippocratic Oath seriously, daring to buck the political wind and acknowledging that you dont treat a mental illness by removing perfectly functional body parts and introducing hormones not meant for someone’s body, particularly when they are too young to legally make such life-changing decisions. It took a successful malpractice lawsuit to shake them into reality. Hopefully the majority of democrat candidates will stick with the old transgender/non-binary/gender-non-conforming advocacy plan and “follow the science” (their science) as they like to demand from everyone else.

Now we will see the ACLU step in and force the issue. To that I say FORCE the recipient of the surgery to sign a waiver, signed by the patient’s lawyer and surgeon’s lawyer making the surgeon not liable for whatever happens based on those medical reasons not to have the surgery.
Or, the surgeon should just flat out refuse. After all, some doctors refuse to do abortions and that’s OK..
As a physician and surgeon, I spoke out on this topic from the first time I saw it happening, you should not be performing elective surgery on children for this indication, I was dismayed at the surgeons who were doing these operations. This is one of the reasons I resigned from the Vermont Medical Society years ago. Treatment should consist of counseling families not destructive / reconstructive surgical procedures.
And to think children and their parents were lied to by doctors and psychologists when they used “Emotional Blackmail” to convince parents and children into taking chemical castrating and sterilizing drugs and have surgeries that produce poor body image with lifelong scars, numbness and pain —-and if they didn’t do it—-the child will commit suicide???? Are you kidding? These are doctors and therapists??? They lied to them these children and parents. What about their hypocratic oath to do no harm??? They didn’t care. Psychologists review your protocols-these are children-talk them through these feelings children are having. Supposedly over 80% outgrow this gender dysphoria so talk to them. But if they lied to children and parents to take the drugs and have the surgery before they are 18—sue them too.
If hospitals were only thinking of how much money they were making and not of the lives they were destroying—they should get sued as well. We cannot have this socialized type of medicine anywhere in America. Children are too important because they are our future so teach them love and not hate. Teach them God made us in his image. Love God and love our neighbor as we love ourselves and they will grow with love.
Very well stated Donna. I just want to emphasize the importance of adequate and appropriate counseling be available for children that suffer gender dysphoria. When I was teaching a course many years ago a student approached me to discuss his gender identity because he feared talking with his parents about it. Thankfully, I chose the right manner in advising him, and his parents later thanked me for doing so. A bit different, but similar.

Wow. It sounds like common sense and decency are prevailing, and the disgusting tide of demonic false narratives are being flushed down the toilet of history into the sewer where they belong.
Let’s keep praying for our president, his cabinet and administration, and for revival, awakening, and the transformation and reformation of our nation. Let’s keep praying for those in media who are responsible for propagating these lies and this nonsense to repent and have the courage to begin publishing and speaking the truth.
This good news is an answer to prayer, and it is indeed a victory in this long battle to protect children. An incredible amount of damage has occurred to many children. My analytical mind has a few questions and comments. Is this just a pause or has the medical community truly recognized their grievous error? Has any remorse been expressed or is this just a reaction to the fear about losing more money to many others who have filed lawsuits? The ideology has been incorporated into the teachings for new medical students. Will those teachings be reversed and will mothers be called “mothers”, not pregnant persons? Thank you to those in the medical community who have been stalwarts standing against transitioning children. And my big questions relate to our education system. Many subjects in the curriculum have been laced with transgenderism. Will the ideology be withdrawn from our school children’s curriculum? And what about the “banned books” which are so vulgar – will those be sent to the dust bin? One only needs to read the NEA handbook (which has been scrubbed from their site) to know their intention is to continue with their teachings on transgenderism. Will the VT Agency of Ed change the egregious policies that allow hiding information from parents? We need to hear that mindsets have been changed. I’m grateful for this step, yet I’m keeping a watchful eye for others to follow suit and reverse the transgender practices. I will not rest until our children’s education is free from political and sexual persuasions and our girls are protected in sports and in their private spaces. I’ll take a deep breath of relief and expect more commonsense to return to our society.
Did the Feds threaten to cut off funding for child mutilation? I wonder why the huge change. Perhaps it’s morality, ethics, legal ramifications or just common sense and caring. I haven’t followed this too closely, but enough to know that child mutilation is wrong. I am glad to see this.
