Vermont elects Republican governor, lieutenant governor, Democrats lose supermajority in both House and Senate

BIG GOP WINS IN HOUSE AND SENATE – both Casey Toof (center, St. Albans House seat) and Chris Mattos (right, Chittenden North Senate seat) were part of a wave of Vermont Republicans winning elections, resulting in the end of supermajorities in both House and Senate.

By Guy Page

A record 372,175 voters cast ballots in the November 5 General Election, beating the previous record of 370,000 in the 2020 record turnout.

Vermont now has political balance, with a popular Republican governor with the power to veto legislation from a Legislature controlled by Democrats. The Green Mountain State has switched political colors from blue to purple.

Results in a nutshell:

Republican Gov. Phil Scott defeated Democrat Esther Charlestin by 71.56% to 21.27% margin – about 3.5 votes for Scott to every one for the Middlebury-based educator and DEI consultant.

Republican John Rodgers will be Vermont’s first Republican lieutenant governor since Phil Scott in 2015-2016.

The Senate picked up six GOP seats to make the margin 17 Dem/Progs, 13 Republicans.

The House picked up more than enough new Republicans to eliminate the Democrat supermajority which House Speaker used to override Gov. Scott’s vetos of controversial school spending, carbon reduction, and Act 250 legislation.

In the other four statewide office races, incumbents – Treasurer Mike Pieciak, Auditor Doug Hoffer, Attorney General Charity Clark, and Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas – all were returned to office. Their GOP competitors collected vote tallies around 35-37%.

On the federal level, Bernie Sanders and Becca Balint easily bested GOP nominees Gerald Malloy and Mark Coester. Kamala Harris enjoyed an all-too-rare easy victory, with Donald Trump receiving just 36%.

The big pickups also may lead to changes in leadership in both Senate and House, with more centrist Democrat or independent leaders making common cause with the enlarged Republican caucuses.

    • Perhaps it is opportune to remind the Democratic- Progressive Groupthink of the Proverb: “Pride goeth before the fall.”

    • Hi Pete, and I would say that’s a good caution to the new GOP hegemony in Washington, D.C., too. May God bless our nation with servant leaders.

    • Guy. Really? Must you fall prey to the ‘rescuer complex’, because you too are struggling to think well of yourself? Why would you think Mr. Gummere would cite a proverb that applies only to the Democratic- Progressive Groupthink? Wouldn’t it have been better, journalistically, to wait on this caution and let ‘the new GOP hegemony in Washington, D.C.’ show its true colors before accusing it of being reckless? It’s fall. Consider the hunter’s credo. You should shoot the ducks when they’re flying.

  1. Hope springs eternal. Tax bills and lost business kills the majority. Hallelujah! The next session should be a no-brainer….repeal, repeal, repeal – cut, cut cut – jobs, jobs, jobs (Real jobs, not the grifting, useless, dead weights of NGOs and non-profiteers)

    • It’s still a D/P majority, unfortunately. However- baruth, krowinski sibila and the cast on marxists now must negotiate within their chambers as well as with phil scott. We’re a long way from repeal, repeal- but with john rodgers serving on the committee of committees as LG, chris bray gone, Pat Brennan filling Dick Mazza’s Senate seat… things look a lot less bleak. The realities of 2020’s legislative action will hit hard in 2025- legislative leadership has some explaining and careful compromise to do.
Vermont has been given a two year reprieve from a totalitarian marxist government.

  2. Excellent work towards bringing Vermont back to Vermont, let’s show the progressive
majority, they are not so Super any longer, and real Vermonter’s will bring the state back from the liberal nonsense………………………………. Thanks !!

  3. No way to measure the effect, but I believe that all of us here who have been pointing out the Dem/Prog hypocrisy for the past several years had at least some small effect on this year’s results. So thank you to everyone here who has been steadfast in shining the light of truth on the current super-majority’s tactics.

And of course, thank you to VDC for giving us common sense folk a place to make our voices heard. You have filled a vacuum that very much needed filling here in Vermont.

But our job isn’t done. We have to keep the ball rolling. and keep up the momentum. We may have turned the corner, but we haven’t reached the final goal. So after taking a few days to savor our victories, we need to get right back to work.

Never give up, never give in, never back down, and never back off!

    • CHS is DOA. PUC is looking for an Alternative. Revising the GWSA is on the table.

    • Ahh, John the CHS is not DOA, the PUC work-around will be as dangerous to the Vermont economy and Vermont people as the CHS. The root legislation, the GWSA needs to be repealed- a doubtful feat as the legislature and it’s leadership remain entrenched in ClimateChange™ rhetoric. Look for the “carrot” to be offered of around $1.00 per gallon, because…ClimateChange™. Remember too, that phil scott
is a ClimateChange™ believer- and will “go along to get along”. Tuesday’s election result is but a pause in the marxist machine devouring what once was a damn fine state. They’ll be back in super-majority force in but a few election cycles.

  4. What a good night! Burlington continues to vote it’s way into the outhouse but nationally some major victories and locally the supermajority of ninnies has been ousted along with Zucherman. Huzzah!

    One final Let’s Go Brandon!

    • Yes, Burlington has become a cesspool, hopefully home and business owners step up against the progressive strangle hold, the first step is to oust the DEI Mayor, and change the gaggle of fools known as the city council…………..

Step up people, it’s your city

  5. Now that the political diarrhea is over and we have new leaders on the throne, the next year will be very interesting. Most of these so called leaders sold you out in the Covid scam demic and they can never repair that damage. Do not get your hopes up for any major change as these clowns are not running the federal reserve. The federal government will still have to bail out this bankrupt state and it would be wise to get your personal affairs in order for the future.

  6. The first thing these new leaders can do is give up the free lunch they get from the taxpayers and show real leadership.

  7. I’m sure there are a lot of people crying in their oatmeal this morning, and I’m so glad, and proud to not be one of them ! I’m so glad that Chris Bray and Mark McDonald went bye-bye (along with a lot of others)! I live in Washington Co. and therefore did not get to help in their ouster, but I would like to extend my congratulations, and thanks to those of you who got out and voted, and helped to deliver results in our Senate. Thank you, Pat Finnie

  8. Vermont still has the lowest percentage for Trump of any state, but seems like great work on the state level. Hopefully it is a start towards a more competitive Vermont. It shows even in Vermont, people can get tired of leftist control. And it is also nice to see New Hampshire elect Kelly Ayotte governor.

    • The Trump vote in Vermont just demonstrates how out of touch the average liberal VT voter is with America. Rich, liberal voters who moved here and are insulated from the damaging effects of the progressives by their wealth and can afford to virtue signal themselves happy and to their liberal friends.

The not so wealthy liberal VT voters who believe that a democrat/progressive will save them are just as out of touch. Voting for Bernie after 30 years of nothing from him except enriching himself also demonstrates that you can’t fix stupid.

The winds of change are blowing in a new direction, and we must continue to provide the truth to the uninformed masses that refuse to identify what their party of choice is doing to harm and not help them at all.

  9. We just elected an 83-year-old Senator, who for the next six years will be sidelined in the Senate. Indeed, all our representation in D.C. will be sidelined. We have a Governor who publicly announced he voted against his own party – which won the popular vote, the Executive Office, the Senate, and we will soon find out the House. Vermont will need strong local leadership these next years. It is all we have.

  10. It’s a start, so now is the time to plan and build off of these wins by making a foundation for future GOP leaders to stand on and get support from, one block at a time. Now is the time to find good candidates and get them established to run next election cycle as I suspect Trumps sweep and resulting reforms will bring good people out of the woodwork to run.

Keep in mind the reforms Team Trump will make in Washington will drive a lot of power back to the state, so we must have good people in place to handle that local defederalized power increase, and not be overwhelmed by it.

The job is just starting to Take Back Vermont so jump aboard young smart people and get involved in taking back Vermont’s government from the looney left wing nuts.

    It’s a good start!

    Onward!

  11. Glad to see Mark McDonald gone.
I believe that there may have been a chance for a pick up of House seats in the Randolph area BUT..the two Republican candidates put zero information about themselves online. Trust me, I searched and I don’t vote for people who I know nothing about except for “Vote for me”

  12. It is a mystery how so many people voted for Harris. When she talked verbal diarrhea flew from her mouth, she couldn’t string a coherent sentence together. She never got a vote in the primary but was placed on the ballot by the democrats machine. A total perversion of the democratic system. And then to effectively say that people who believe in Jesus don’t belong in her party…

    • You just described the invasive Vermont liberal. They do not operate on thought or facts; they vote on feelings and how they will be viewed in their circle of liberal friends. If they veer of the plantation, they will be ostracized and thrown from the party or circle of friends. When is the last time you ever heard a liberal say either they were wrong, or they were sorry? They never look outside the containment of their trappings for fear that they might be wrong, misinformed or abandoned by their imagined friends.

    • BECAUSE ORANGE MAN BAD!!! That is the only reason people here in this state seem to have for voting against him. They refuse to even do the work themselves to find out who he really is and how he governs. It is pathetic.

  13. So this means that the Democrats and Progressives HAVE to play ball now. Should be fun as none of them know how. Waking up today to see Chris Bray gone was SSSSSOOOOOO nice.

  14. Good night for Republicans. But the Senate and the House are still controlled by Democrats, the Governor is still a centrist, and other than the Lt. Governor, who will have little to say about anything, Democrats hold all statewide offices. Not to mention an easy clean sweep of congressional seats. I’d say that wishful thinking aside, Vermont is still decidedly blue.

  15. The only thing Purple about Vermont is the hair of the AWFUL (affluent white feminist urban liberal) anorgasmic Vermont woman. F Vermont!

  16. Thank you VDC…we are making progress and no small thanks to you for allowing free expression on this website. This is absolutely refreshing!

  17. Great news and great job, Vermonters! But why do you still have a liberal governor?

  18. Yes, this election is real progress toward a more common sense agenda in Montpelier. But there is SO much that needs to be addressed. The climate-foolishness is of course a top priority to reverse. There is still the elephant in the room that gets very little attention—-the state budget. Vermont’s budget is twice as large as New Hampshire’s but we have only half their population——that is unconscionable! Are Vermont’s services 2-4x better than New Hampshire’s? I have seen no data suggesting that. Vermont’s K-12 spending is close to the highest in the country, but our students test scores are not commensurate with that high cost. The scores are mediocre at best. This fantastical unsustainable spending needs to be slashed soon or only the 1% will be able to afford living here. I hope the Legislature will address this as a first order of business….but I’m not holding my breath.
