The author of the above comment has been observing this phenomenon for many years. Back in 1988, he and some other downtown BTV business interests launched a program called Westward Ho to encourage transients to leave town, with privately-raised financial incentives. The current administration is encouraging free-range humans to COME TO Burlington with taxpayer-funded financial incentives, and the results are in the headlines of the crime news on a daily basis. If you enjoy shopping, dining and drinking in Burlington, your choices of venues are getting smaller and smaller all the time while this socialist transformation proceeds while your risk of being accosted, getting jabbed by a pathogen-contaminated needle or having your vehicle broken into are increasing while Mayor Emma-Hyphen fiddles.

I found it disappointing that this headline was not actually quoted in the subsequent article. 🤔 Upon reading the headline, I just assumed Bernie was poking around to see if the indoctrinated were still interested in voting for him.
Proprietors of fleeing and closing Burlington businesses are being kind when they quote “financial hardships” as the reason. That is a code phrase for their concerns about public safety for their patrons and employees who are out late in the evening when most of the mayhem occurs. I believe it was specifically the high insurance costs for an alcohol-serving establishment that were quoted as the reason for this closure, which result from Vermont’s statewide “dram laws” holding multiple parties associated with the establishment responsible for any ill behavior by intoxicated patrons. Personal responsibility is a lost concept in liberal Vermont. Additionally though, it’s just that much harder running a business in Burlington where vagrancy, vandalism, thievery, panhandling and violent crime are minimally enforced. Progressivism brought this on to a once-flourishing city, and now the result is a slowly dying business base. When they lose the revenue from successful businesses, then they go after other sources of revenue to fund their lavish social spending, as we have seen Mayor Emma-Hyphen already appealing recently to the state for “help”.
What a shame, with the voters to blame. I would not expect miracles, but just imagine the improvement to Burlington that could have resulted with Joan Shannon as mayor and anyone but Sarah George as State’s Attorney?
