U.S. Sen. Peter Welch explained March 25 why he voted against confirming Markwayne Mullin as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, citing concerns over immigration enforcement policies and recent deadly incidents involving federal agents.
In a press release, Welch said the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) “need major reforms,” sharply criticizing the immigration agenda of former President Donald Trump and advisor Stephen Miller.
Welch pointed specifically to federal immigration operations in Minneapolis, where two fatal encounters earlier this year intensified national debate over ICE tactics. In January 2026, Renée Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother, was shot and killed by an ICE agent during an enforcement action. Weeks later, Alex Pretti, a nurse, was also fatally shot by federal agents during a separate incident.
The deaths occurred amid a broader federal immigration crackdown that led to thousands of arrests in the city and widespread protests.
“We can’t have a repeat of what happened in Minneapolis, where ICE terrorized a city and killed two people,” Welch said, referring to the incidents. He added that he could not support a nominee who would “continue to carry out this brutal agenda.”
Despite his opposition, Welch indicated a willingness to work with Mullin moving forward, particularly on strengthening the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which he described as “critically important and still under attack by the president.”
Welch also pledged oversight of DHS under Mullin’s leadership, saying he would work to hold the department accountable, as he has with previous leadership, including former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Welch, once a looser always a looser, and no brain activity. Thanks Libs to vote for the Ambulance chaser from MA.
Ayuh, Peter Welch, Peter Welch ? A sad example of what the State of Vermont has become, that we would send this flatlander to Washington to represent us. Pitiful ……
The same two-faced guy who said Mullin was competent and honest, yet votes with his lib buddies anyway. It should come as no surprise to anyone.
Welch, keeping his perfect record as one of the most useless senators this country has ever hatched.
The major reform is needed, they need to get enforcing the laws on the books a bit faster. We can send them home with a bible and constitution of the united states, in their home language, could be the best evangelizing moment on planet earth.
Wonder how the astro turf event of “No-Kings” is going today?
Is this a slam on Christianity? Are they protesting Jesus Christ?
Bernie is working for Vermont leading the No Kings rally in Minneapolis
I know huh?….He’s all about Vermont, too funny. The truth shed way too much light on that fraudster. It is closer to his real home, Chicago, epicenter for organizers and other communist actors and thinkers……
Can we close our border so he can’t come back?
Bernie can care less about the average Vermonter or average citizen at that, he doesn’t care about TSA, he reportedly flew in Private First Class jet from DC to Minneapolis
Vermont’s congressional delegation is a disgrace to Vermont
It’s not law _enforcement_ that needs reform: ICE and DHS agents are doing their job to uphold law and order, and it’s a tough job. With a world war going on in Europe and the Middle East, it is shocking Welch does not want security at our borders and in our airports.
It’s the immigration _laws_ that need to be reformed. People have made this a top election issue at various times over the past 30 or 40 years.
Welch, what laws have you proposed to reform the system? You’ve been in there for over 19 years, so you’ve had plenty of time to take action. Sanders has been in there for over 36 years. I wish I had time to research the history of their legislative proposals and votes on the issue.
I suspect the reality is that these guy’s do not want immigration reform. They want to continue importing second class citizens: without full rights, these new arrivals are the new slaves.
Republicans, if they were smart, would demand that remaining law abiding illegal immigrants be granted a pathway to full citizenship so that they can fully participate. Pending conditions, of course, such as passing a background check, demonstrating basic English language skills, and learning the basic history of the USA including the Constitution. Most are Christians, and if you could take a survey, you may be surprised at how many are in favor of the Republican agenda to Make America Great Again.
One again wonderful leadership from the front…..not. “Look I do not approve of your appointment but lets work together”. How’s that working for you Mr. Welch? Me in that situation I’d kick you so hard in the ass that you’d end up in Chicago or where you’d be appreciated. Certainty not here. Just MHO not making a statement. You always seem to have the podium on that BS.
Over 600,000 illegals deported since Jan. 2025, and Welch’s only concern was for the two people killed? Those two were protestors and if they had any respect for this country and its laws, they may still be alive today.
I totally agree and the best thing about Welch and others like him is that are showing their “true” colors. Part of the plan to set them all up for Treason and Gitmo.
Just a little longer now folks.
I find Senator Welch highly offensive. How the people of Vermont keep voting for the dirty disgusting Dems is beyond me. I am disgusted by their refusal to work with Republicans for the good of our country. It just makes it more evident that they are only interested in their own power.
