Today is Day Three of Crossover Week, when bills must be voted out of their original committee in order to proceed through the Vermont legislative sausage-grinder and become law. A few quick hits:
House Environment has pulled the controversial proposal to enforceably post land against hunting and fishing by painting trees with purple paint. Critics found the measure too permanent for a process that is meant to be renewed, or not, annually or semi-annually.
Senate votes unanimously for Prop 4, with one walkout – Prop 4, the proposed amendment that adds gender identity and nation of origin, and other categories to the list of protected civil rights in the Vermont Constitution, was approved unanimously by the Vermont Senate Wednesday, March 11. Only Sen. Steve Heffernan (R-Addison) didn’t vote yes. He did so by walking out of the Senate chamber shortly after Senate Pro Tem Phil Baruth announced the vote.
Corrections supervisory fees eliminated – H.635, eliminating fees to parolees of the Vermont Department of Corrections, passed the House and now moves on to the Senate.
In the House today – Today, the House is expected to vote on final approval of new penalties and procedures for animal cruelty offenses (H.578), requiring lobbyists to be identified in legislative advocacy advertising, and H.744, procedures for arrest without a warrant.
Coming up for a vote today, Thursday March 12, in the Senate –
S212 – public water supplies. There’s concern this bill could reduce fishing derby access to reservoirs.
S298 – creation of a Vermont Voting Rights report. The proposed VVR would prohibit gerrymandering and enhance voting access to minorities speaking a foreign language.
S227 – protecting illegal immigrants in Vermont schools.
S.211 – motor vehicle inspections required every two years, not annually as required now.

Prop 4 – another POS bill that the F-troop gang of republicans in the Senate don’t question at all (let alone vote against).
It was courageous of Senator Heffernan to boldly walk out. Lots of pressure inside the State House to comply in both parties.
Let’s just get the baloney with car inspections over and stop doing them instead of making them every two years.
New Hampshires program was supposed to end by a Judge ruled the Legislature does not Constitutional authority to eliminate it since it is not a ‘fee’ program but the sticker is a ‘tax stamp’ and cannot be repealed since it was enacted by a previous legislative session
You must pay a bribe to many people in order to own your car. Tax stamp, what a joke, but more money is needed to support the judges.
Please paint the anal inspection booth purple at the controlled one door entrance at the Vermont Statehouse.
LOL!

Renee, what would have been courageous of my Senator was casting a vote. He didn’t, he ran from his elected responsibility. Because of cowardice. “If everyone else (senators) is an a-hole, maybe it’s more likely the one standout actually is” or so the saying goes
Heffernan is my Senator, as well. All the other Republican Senators voted yes on a constitutional amendment I have been tracking and reporting on House and Senate Judiciary committee meetings since 2024. ALL the Republicans EXCEPT Heffernan that voted “yes” for this wretched Prop, which fundamentally changes the way our state will function are the cowards. “Let the people decide” is the excuse that makes them think they are immune from liability. They refuse to carry any accountability that they are putting forth a reparations amendment to our state constitution, on which voters are ill informed. Perhaps go listen to Senator Hashim actually call it reparations.
Oh,nd Renee, real classy suggesting lgbt people want to farm babies through free IVF. Talk about derangement syndrome. When Donny wants free IVF (he doesn’t, he lies) it’s amazing. When two dads want a child it’s assumed they’re sickos. Unless they have a billion dollars or are friends with Epstein*cough* you probably don’t have to worry about “they gays” eating babies. Shame on you
It certainly sounds as though you’re the sicko.
Josh, perhaps you should educate yourself about legislation in the VERMONT State House before you comment. Democrats want surrogacy covered by health insurance. Your ignorance is showing. And shame on YOU for misrepresenting my written statements. I did not write that LGBTQ+ people want to farm babies. Prop 4 has nothing to do with our POTUS. Vermont Democrats are destroying this state. Must be you like lawlessness and government takeover of reproduction. A state that provides rights under a reproductive liberty constitutional provision can also take them away.
Just a little off topic. Now use your inside voices and apologize.
Renee, here’s your own words: “Could give LGBTQ-identifying individuals IVF and surrogacy “rights,” which would commercialize women’s reproduction capabilities and provide health insurance coverage for both the rental of women’s wombs, male sperm, and the buying and selling of the unborn. ” Commercialize and buying and selling. The 9th commandment is sad
Josh, “rights” is not “farming” babies. Duh. There are industries that buy, sell, and ship embros, sperm, etc.. Maybe some are owned by LGBTQ identifying people, but not necessarily. To insist i am saying that LGBTQ people are doing all the buying and selling, or “farming,” is disingenuous. You need to work on your reading comprehension.
