A Massachusetts woman died following a single-vehicle crash Thursday morning on Interstate 89 in the town of Bolton, Vermont State Police said.
The crash occurred at approximately 11:50 a.m. on Dec. 26, when troopers from the Vermont State Police Williston Barracks were notified of a crash on I-89 northbound near mile marker 73.
Police said a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek, operated by Nelson E. Caraballo, 61, of Somerville, MA, was traveling north when it swerved to avoid a tractor-trailer that was changing lanes. The vehicle subsequently lost control, traveled into the median, and struck a tree.
Caraballo, who was wearing a seat belt, sustained minor injuries and was transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center for treatment.
A passenger in the vehicle, Janet F. Montgomery, 62, of Somerville, Massachusetts, was also wearing a seat belt and was taken to UVM Medical Center with what were initially believed to be minor injuries. Police said Montgomery later died at the hospital from injuries sustained in the crash.
The Subaru sustained front-end damage. No other vehicles were involved.
The crash remains under investigation by Vermont State Police.
