
A 21-year-old Northfield woman was killed and another seriously injured Wednesday evening after a wrong-way driver caused a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 89 in the town of Bolton, according to Vermont State Police.
At about 5:22 p.m. on Dec. 17, troopers responded to multiple reports of a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-89 near mile marker 71. While troopers were en route, dispatchers received additional calls reporting a multi-vehicle crash on the interstate.
Police said their investigation determined that a Toyota Tundra, driven by Timothy Wooster, 45, of Jericho, of was traveling northbound when it crossed the median into the southbound lane and continued driving the wrong way. His vehicle then collided head-on with a Kia driven by Hailey Westcot, 21, of Northfield. A tractor trailer driven by Douglas Bailey of Londonderry, traveling southbound in the travel lane, struck Vehicle Westcot after the initial collision, causing a rollover and additional damage.
Wooster was transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Westcot was pronounced dead at the scene and later transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Burlington. Bailey was evaluated at the scene and reported no injuries.
Police said Wooster was cited on a charge of grossly negligent operation with death resulting. State police said additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
The Vermont State Police were assisted at the scene by the Williston Police Department, DMV Enforcement and Safety, the Williston Fire Department, Bolton Rescue, and Richmond Fire & Rescue.
