A convoy of kindness will roll into the University of Vermont Children’s Hospital on December 18, carrying far more than boxes and bags. It will bring smiles, comfort, and a powerful reminder that the community stands shoulder to shoulder with its youngest patients.
The Burlington Fire Department, through the Office of the City Fire Marshal, is helping lead this year’s Operation Fire Cuffs, a beloved holiday tradition now marking its 15th consecutive year. The annual effort gathers brand-new, unwrapped toys and gift cards for children receiving care at UVM Children’s Hospital, turning generosity into a hands-on mission of hope.
What began years ago as a simple idea has grown into one of the region’s most heartwarming collaborations. This year’s toy drive includes participation from an extraordinary list of partners: firefighters, police officers, rescue crews, state and federal law enforcement, schools, small businesses, utilities, supermarkets, gyms, farms, and restaurants. From Burlington to Winooski, from Milton to Grand Isle, dozens of organizations answered the call to help brighten hospital rooms during the holiday season.
Members of the Burlington Fire Department are especially proud to be part of the effort. Firefighters see firsthand how children face fear and uncertainty with courage, and Operation Fire Cuffs gives first responders a chance to deliver something purely joyful. The toys and gift cards collected will be delivered directly to the hospital, where staff can match gifts to children of all ages.
Assistant Fire Marshal Philip Edgerley, one of the organizers, says the strength of Operation Fire Cuffs is in its unity. Agencies that usually meet under serious circumstances come together for a joyful purpose, all focused on helping kids feel a little more like kids during a difficult time.
Community members are encouraged to keep the tradition going by supporting Operation Fire Cuffs 2025 on Facebook, sharing the message, and participating in future drives. Donations can be dropped off or mailed to Burlington Fire Department Station 1 on South Winooski Avenue or Station 2 on North Avenue, as well as the Vermont State Police barracks in Williston and St. Albans.
As the toys are delivered and gift cards tucked into caring hands, the message is clear: the holidays in Burlington are powered not just by lights and decorations, but by compassion. And for the children at UVM Children’s Hospital, Operation Fire Cuffs delivers something priceless — a moment of joy, wrapped with love.
