The illegal possession of fraudulent documents, including a bogus social security card, is the reason a Winooski mother and her 7-year-old son were detained at the International border over the Thanksgiving holiday, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Friday.
Winooski school officials had put out a notice this week expressing concern that the student from the John F. Kennedy School had not returned from the holiday break and indicated they thought the child was being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. They said it was a matter of a wrong turn.
In reality it turns out the mother, and her son were taken into custody at the border at Highgate Springs on Thanksgiving Day, according to Customs and Border Protection.
The mother, child — and an adult man, who was traveling with them — were denied entry into Canada for unknown reasons on Thursday Nov. 27 and they were ordered to turn around, officials said.
When the trio got back to the United States side, a search of their vehicle by CBP officers discovered fraudulent documents, a spokesman said.
They included a fraudulent Lawful Permanent Resident card – also known as a Green Card — and the false Social Security card belonging to the mother, CBP said.
The mother and her son were subsequently transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Enforcement and Removal Operations detained them pending her immigration proceedings.
They are housed at a Family Immigration Detention Facility in Texas while the case is resolved, officials said.
“Her son remained with her throughout the process, and at no point were they separated,” the CBP told Vermont News First.
The adult man traveling with them also was turned over to ICE ERO for further investigation and processing, CBP said.
Compass Vermont reported the family is from Ecuador and came to the United States 3 years ago. They have lived in Winooski for two months.
The detention case generated some national interest because a few media reports made it sound like the 7-year-old had been snagged by himself by ICE.
Newsweek magazine alsos reported Winooski School Superintendent Wilmer Chavarria said the family “made a wrong turn” while traveling out of state to visit relatives, leading to the encounter with immigration authorities. He thought they were in the Midwest visiting relatives.
That did not jive with the CBP report that they were caught at the Highgate Springs Port of Entry, about 38 miles due north of Winooski on Interstate 89.

Fake papers. And of course, Canada wouldn’t let them through, but the propagandized & paid protesters of the USA sure fight for the non-existent “right” of the wretched refuse of teeming shores to enter into this nation any damn way they please including cartels, drug dealers, coyotes, – all displacing those who have patiently and lawfully awaited the opportunity to immigrant via proper process & protocol.
One can only imagine how many falsified documents abound in Winooski since the school superintendent brazenly, illicitly, and foolishly announced the school system of the town is not subject to federal law and imagines it as a “sanctuary” school district. Thanks for the heads up, Mr. Superintendent. As IF no one could ever guess just passing through. You can barely pump gas there without getting a shakedown.
Isn’t it astounding how these stories usually arrive to us at first with severe spin on them and innuendo that bad, illegal, unconstitutional, racist, xenophobic transgressions are being committed by our ICE and CBP?
Oh…and then a few days or a week later the truth is revealed that—what do you know—the leadership of our government is doing what we elected and mandated it to do.
I find it fascinating that ever day, the barrage of negative, whiny, armchair, critical complaining is unceasingly hurled at Donald Trump and his administration for actually doing something.
Is it perhaps because we as a nation are so used to decades of empty political rhetoric, impotent leadership, hypocrisy, gaslighting, and actual intentionally orchestrated divisiveness and destruction of all that is good about our country and its institutions, that many folks are incredulous that we have a president and a cabinet who have the moral will and the guts to do what they’ve been hired to do?
Are the critics who complain endlessly and most vociferously plagued with historical amnesia about how wimpy, toxic, ruinous, and anti-American the last few several iterations of puppet presidents have been?
Yes, wisdom is proven by her children, in this case the receipts of capturing, detaining, and deporting those who have scammed their way into our country, and are scamming the system to remain here, and cheating to gain what only those who are truly citizens and those who have done the hard, honest work to rightfully and legally become citizens deserve.
And as Guy so eloquently pointed out today, how many of these critics have the honesty and humility to say, “I was wrong. This President is delivering on his promises, and his administration is performing an aggressive and amazing job of cleaning up the disgusting mess left behind by puppet presidents and bringing true transformation and reform to society.”
But just as the deceived pompous religious elite refused to recognize and receive their own Messiah when He stood right in front of them and performed miracles, there are many who continue to believe and swallow the false narratives and refuse to see real change happening before their very eyes.
I’m not comparing Trump to Jesus ever by any means. My point is that pride is deceitful and can’t see good even when the evidence is incontrovertible.
