The whole state of Vermont and the cities of Burlington, Montpelier, and Winooski have been labeled as ‘Sanctuary Jurisdictions’ by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and now face federal funding cuts under President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration.
Governor Scott has previously insisted Vermont is in compliance with federal immigration law regarding sanctuary cities and states, and so has Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak.
“Today, DHS issued a comprehensive list of sanctuary jurisdictions that are deliberately obstructing the enforcement of federal immigration laws and endangering American citizens,” wrote DHS on its X page. “We are exposing these sanctuary politicians who harbor criminal illegal aliens and defy federal law. @POTUS Trump and @Sec_Noem will always put the safety of the American people first. Sanctuary politicians are on notice: comply with federal law.”
The DHS list, prompted by Executive Order 14287 signed by President Trump on April 28, identifies states and local jurisdictions that fail to comply with federal immigration laws.
“Sanctuary jurisdictions including cities, counties, and states that are deliberately and shamefully obstructing the enforcement of federal immigration laws endangering American communities,” says the DHS website. “Sanctuary cities protect dangerous criminal aliens from facing consequences and put law enforcement in peril.”
Burlington, Vermont’s largest city, has policies limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities, such as restricting local law enforcement from sharing information with ICE, aligning with the state’s overall illegal immigrant-friendly stance.
Vermont’s inclusion marks it as one of 15 entire states labeled as sanctuaries, alongside states like California, New York, and Massachusetts, potentially risking federal funding cuts under Trump’s executive order.
Historically, Vermont has supported immigrant rights, with a 2020 settlement between the state’s Attorney General and the Department of Motor Vehicles banning the sharing of migrant data with ICE after allegations of civil rights violations

The three towns listed in the article each have passed local charter changes that allows non-citizens to vote in local elections. However, those local elections are tied
to school budgets. School budgets are not LOCAL as they affect the entire
state through our property taxes. WAKE UP and reconsider who is doing what
to Vermont. Becca needs to go. We need more grownups in charge.

Totally agree! They aren’t citizens and it’s illegal for them to pass a local law saying they can vote just because they live in the Towns! They live in the Towns illegally!
They are draining our resources and adding to our school budget needs . School taxes are high enough but we shouldn’t have to pay for kids that shouldn’t be in our school system at all. Or pay for their families medical bills and have them living in housing when Vermonters can’t find housing for their families! I am sick of my taxes going to people in this State and this Country! Becca needs to go!

How about some understandable substance? The generalities you used of: bigoted, racist, extreme prejudice and abuse of power are all the same talking points used by Trump-haters since Trump entered the political arena.
Just off the top of my head – – Where were your assertions when President Biden was letting millions of people illegally migrate across the border over the last four years? Was that constitutional? Where were your assertions over President Biden’s Executive Orders then? Assuming, of course, that President Biden actually knew what those executive orders were – while some unelected shadow administrator (i.e., puppet master) wielded the ‘autopen’? Where were your concerns when Biden threatened to withhold aide to the Ukrainians unless the prosecutor investigating his son and the payments to President Biden’s family was fired? Where were your concerns when President Biden lied during the 2020 debate (supported by 51 intelligence agents) claiming that the Hunter Biden laptop in their custody was ‘Russian disinformation’? Where was your concern when Instagram and Facebook were censoring comments at the behest of the Biden administration?
I mean, really…. still playing the race card claiming President Trump is ‘bigoted and racist’ is all you’ve got? Even while more African Americans and Latinos voted for him than for any Republican candidate in U.S. history? Go figure.
Amen to all AND I would add that the very loud and forceful voice of Migrant Justice is NOT representative of most Vermonters’ opnions. They happen to be the squeakiest wheel getting all the grease when it comes to immigration issues.

What Balint says makes no logical sense. It’s impossible to be a US citizen, let alone a “Vermonter,” if you are an illegal immigrant.
Living within the geographical borders of Vermont does not make one a Vermonter who is eligible for the rights, benefits, and privileges afforded to US citizens. Otherwise, US citizenship is meaningless, and the hard work that millions of legal immigrants have done to enjoy those rights, privileges, and benefits US citizens enjoy was for nought.
When Marxist Socialist ideologies and policies are imposed on a community, a culture, and a nation to level a playing field, that which is worked hard and fought for loses its value. The result is entitlement, mediocrity, and the asinine words and policies of the vast majority of Vermont’s state and federal representatives.

Please don’t mix or conflate rights of citizens with rights of illegals. They are totally different. The Constitution is for state citizens only. Legal immigrants have an even different set of privileges that can be revoked. Elected state officials are expected to know the difference!

She should be charged for personally for aiding them and helping them avoid hide from legal deportation!

It is no secret the Federales [sic] set up permenant shop here due to the crimes and disasters our Administration and local law enforcement/authorities couldn’t handle for obvious reasons. Also, note the number of National Guard from other States milling around and the staged visits from military brass. Are the States that filed lawsuits against the “new” administration the same appearing on the Federales'[sic] list of bad toadie States?
Perhaps certain executive orders that were written by 45, extended by 46, and now 47 (45 2.0) is going to drop the hammer? Was there a set-up within the set up? Yes! Exactly! How did the Democrats get such an insane hold on Vermont! Vermont used to be a Red State! Why are college students voting in our elections when they aren’t permanent residents here. They should go back to their home states to vote or vote by absentee ballot! We also need to go back to pre-Covid voting regulations. Stop mailing every person a ballot! We have Polls for voting and people need to show up there to cast their ONLY vote!
There was a lawsuit precedent set several years ago about not being able to vote here if it is not your permanent legal residence! College students shouldn’t be voting in any local/State elections and either should people illegally present in our Country!
