VTDigger and the University of Vermont’s Center for Community News (CCN) jointly announced on Tuesday, May 7 the hire of New York Times climate journalist Austyn Gaffney.
“The partnership marks a strategic effort to enhance statewide climate coverage while mentoring the next generation of Vermont-based journalists,” a VT Digger statement says.
Gaffney, a 2024–2025 New York Times climate desk fellow, has reported on federal environmental policy, sea level rise, and extreme weather for the NYT and other major outlets. Her investigative work has earned national recognition, including the prestigious Sidney Award from the Sidney Hillman Foundation.
“Climate change is increasingly affecting many aspects of our lives here in Vermont — from farming, to health, to economy and housing,” said VTDigger CEO Sky Barsch. “Austyn brings a deep understanding of environmental issues to this role, and Vermonters will be well-served by the stories she uncovers and explains through her reporting.”
The partnership reflects a shared mission between VTDigger and UVM: to bolster Vermont’s local news landscape through collaboration, shared resources, and student engagement. Gaffney will lead a team of UVM student reporters as they investigate climate and environmental stories affecting communities across the state.
“This initiative is an opportunity for UVM to deliver on its land grant mission by expanding collaboration with trusted institutions like VTDigger and serving communities across Vermont,” said William Falls, Dean of the UVM College of Arts and Sciences. “We are thrilled to have Austyn leading a cohort of student reporters.”
The Center for Community News is a national leader in university-led journalism partnerships, and its Community News Service (CNS) places more than 150 UVM students each year with local news outlets across Vermont. CCN Executive Director Richard Watts highlighted the timeliness of the hire.
The initiative is made possible through a generous gift from the Canaday Family Charitable Trust, with additional support from the UVM College of Arts and Sciences; donors David Blittersdorf, Mathew Rubin, and Kathryn Stearns; and VTDigger’s sustaining members.
Gaffney’s portfolio includes bylines in National Geographic, The Guardian, Grist, High Country News, Rolling Stone, and Sierra, among others. She holds an MFA in creative nonfiction from the University of Kentucky and has received numerous accolades for her investigative and literary work. More about her journalism can be found at www.austyngaffney.com.
Before becoming a freelance writer, the Ontario, Canada native raised in Kentucky was an outdoor educator, a tour guide through national parks, an apprentice for vegetable and flower farms, a grocer, a florist, and a bartender, she said on her website.

“The partnership reflects a shared mission between VTDigger and UVM” Interesting bedfellows between a registered non-profit and a publically funded higher “institution” of education. Heads up, NYC and California highly salaried refugees are seeking asylum in our free-ranging psych ward. Gee, I wonder why?
Question to AI: How is UVM funded?
Answer: “In fiscal year 2025, the University of Vermont (UVM) had a total operating budget of $441.787 million. This budget includes the general fund and income/expense activities, with the general fund portion being $417.972 million. UVM also receives substantial funding from other sources like tuition, fees, and federal grants. (Federal grants? How are those funded and by whom?)
Here’s a more detailed breakdown:
General Fund: $417.972 million
Net Tuition: $303.331 million
Miscellaneous Student Fees: $16.823 million
Sponsored Research/Other F&A Recovery: $38.335 million (NIHS/USAID?)
Grant and contract revenues: $231.0 million in fiscal year 2022
Federal transfers to Vermont governments: $4.2 billion in FY 2022 (Billion – with a B)
It’s important to note that UVM also has a significant endowment, which as of June 30, 2023, was valued at $803 million. This endowment provides additional funding for various university programs. (like propaganda and globlist elitist eugenics?)
Headline fixed:
New York Times climate propagandist hired by VTDigger, UVM to indoctrinate young reporters
As I recall a couple of years ago, UVM stated they needed money from the state as they were close to a mega financial situation. Yup, a well run liberal organization. They want their hands into everyone’s wallet. If one goes to UVM, what kind of “education” do they get / pay for?
Great comment Melissa, took some time to get the facts.
Oh great, another one pushing the false narrative on climate change. Apparently we live in an age when experts are so little trusted that everyone has become one.
Historically there has always been shifts in climate going back millions of years. CO2 is not the issue. CO2 represents only 0.04% of the entire makeup of the atmosphere. Of that 0.0384% is natural CO2. Manmade is only 0.0016%. Lowering CO2 will have no effect. Besides, CO2 is “plant food”. No CO2, no food.
As you say, CO2 is not the issue.

“She holds an MFA in creative nonfiction”. If you are being “creative” with “nonfiction”, (truth/facts) is it still “non-fiction” ?
